2015-2016 Case Western Reserve University Application Thread

Why are some people getting emails for their interviews and others only get a status change? I know mine didn't go to spam because I made a new email for applications and have been managing it very carefully...

It wasn't an accident invite, right?

iApply is constantly being updated so the behavior may have changed since I looked at it last - however, IRCC, there can be a delay in when the status changes and the e-mail notifications are sent out. However, I assure you that your invitation to interview was not accidental. [/neurosis] 🙂

Congrats! I think a lot of us are praying for the same fortune. Just out of curiosity, are both interviews on the same day?
Interviews cannot be scheduled on the same day - however, we try and coordinate so that they can be on consecutive days to minimize travel costs. In fact, people applying to both programs often must wait a little longer to hear interview invite decision information because we collectively wait until both committees have reviewed the candidates before informing them. As such, and especially at this time of year, it often the applicants who applied exclusively to one or the other program who are hearing about IIs.

I applied to CT and UT. I got an II for UT, but haven't heard anything from CT. Is that a silent rejection or does that just mean they might revisit my app later?

I'm not an ADCOM, but there is a difference between a silent rejection, and being put into the "review again in a month" pile.

Anyone else interviewing monday?

We actually reject - just look at other posts here. They may not have looked at your app yet, or are not yet done reviewing...or any number of things.

I should have chosen my words a little more carefully: we make efforts to coordinate - however, it isn't always possible. There's no need to coordinate IF an applicant has applied to only one program. Coordination is made worse by the high number applications this yet. Again - things are happening asynchronously between the two committees, at different rates. So decisions are reached at different times, and also uploaded to iApply at different times.

Telling you guys to no post dates of submission/invites/etc is like telling the sun not to rise. However - this is all, frankly, pointless. Actually - it's worse than pointless - it collectively stresses you all out. Anyway - I feel obligated to tell you guys - not that it'll change behavior.

My main point was: people applying to only one program at Case often can find out much quicker - but that's not a hard-and-fast rule.

Clear as mud?

@vc7777 what are your thoughts on polite/humble "in the area" emails?

thanks for your input!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained... HOWEVER...not all "in the area" requests are the same. IMHO it has to be pretty compelling this early in the application season. If you are planning on being "in the area" next week for a concert, or "in the area" because you live an hour away - this is bad form especially considering that it is so early in the season. Now, if you do underwater biochemistry research off the Great Barrier Reef and can only afford to fly back one more time for your only sister's wedding in December - that'd be a different story. Again, IMHO the bar would have to be set pretty high right now because you are asking that they expedite evaluation of your application at the expense of everyone else ahead of you and are trying to say it is a hardship for you to wait/be invited from, say, now until February.

That's a great point! Thanks again!

naw I interviewed today, and the dean said they had earlier ones this week. confirmed: it was superrr chill.
oops...My bad! Lol..no clearly you're right! I thought that this was the cclcm specific thread when I posted. The two threads for one school thing is really tripping me up. Apologies!

How long does it take for the application to be marked complete? I submitted a month ago and the status page still says "SUBMITTED INCLUDING PAYMENT"

I've got an II and it still says submitted including payment 😛 at the bottom of the page it should say whether or not you're complete.

Just submitted here.. A long secondary ugh, glad it's done!. *crossing fingers for II love*

Not the same day, but I believe they designed the scheduling process so you have the option of setting both up back-to-back (eg., Case Interviews M/W/F, CCLCM on T/Th).
CCLCM interviews on M-Thu-Fri

I saw a group of med students taking pictures in front of the Case Western sign in their white coats today on my way to class... I think I might have freaked them out, I longingly stared at them for a solid two minutes.

I feel ya haha! I work at the hospital and med research complex at my undergrad/in state medical school and I walk through the med school almost every day. It's both motivates me and makes me a little jealous I'm not already a med student 😛

Glad I'm not the only one!

lol, decided to NOT swing by the medical school when I was on campus around Labor Day. Possibly still in denial about not wanting to return to Cleveland...

Come baaaaack! But actually, Cleveland is so much better than it used to be. Did you graduate recently?

Oh, I know Cleveland's much better nowadays, but that was a really low bar 😛
I graduated when there was still a building where the binary walkway is, so "recently" ...

Woah I did not know there used to be a building where the binary walkway is!

Did anyone end up going over the 3500 character limit for any of the essays? I am trying to submit today but can't seem to get my research down (its about 500 characters over). I know it will let me submit it over the limit but not sure if this is a taboo thing to do

Yes, I went a few hundred over. I got put on hold though so I don't know if it is a great idea 😕

Ah sorry to hear that. I also went over the limit but I figure its not a hard cap because it specifically states that it will still save if you are over.

case puts people on hold? how long did it take for that change? my status has just said "SUBMITTED including PAYMENT" since forever
feel your pain 🙁 Im IS and the only II I have is out of state lol

Are you specifically referring to Case? I didn't think Case cared about IS.
I am not specifically referring to case. But yes you are correct case is private so they do not preference IS to my understanding

I went over the character limit when I applied last year. I assumed there was a reason they make it more of a suggestion than a hard cut-off. I get a little excited when I talk about research.

Anyone that already interviewed here have any advice!? My interview is tomorrow and I'm really nervous!!!

This is a wonderful school, I loved visiting! The interviews are very laid back, but I did notice that the interviewers made a point to ask about my research (which is of course to be expected at a place like Case) so make sure to be able to talk about it! Overall it was a very relaxed interview.
