2015-2016 Johns Hopkins University Application Thread

Just got the complete email today from JHSOM. How long after that complete e-mail do people usually hear back for interviews?

I also got the complete email 12/4 (today) and submitted my secondary (and LORs) late October. Of note, the secondary deadline etc. is indeed 12/1, so I wonder whether we are truly complete (e.g. regardless of whether there's something missing, we would be considered complete solely because the deadline has now passed). In either case, I suppose not much can be done other than patient waiting (again).

No I spoke to someone at the Admissions office recently regarding these kind of situations- as long as all your material was in before 12/1 you're fine. The complete email is only a confirmation and doesn't really mean anything.

Decisions coming in less than two weeks... 😱

Ummhmm. I interviewed here last month, and i'm pretty sure we were told that decisions would be released in February, and that they were doing things differently this year. May be I misheard; or may be they release separate batches, idk 🙁.

There are three separate batches. Those who interview August-Mid Oct get decisions Mid-Dec, those from Mid-Oct-Dec get late Jan/Feb and the rest I believe are in March.

Oh ok, thanks for the clarification.

II tonight, complete 8/13! But my interview date they scheduled for me was August 28th, 2015. Should I just email back and request for a December/January date?

haha so in my email that I received tonight, they said that my interview is on 09/28/2015. It was an error, they had meant to schedule me for a January interview. Nevertheless, SUPER STOKED!!

Is Johns Hopkins receptive to ITA/"In the Area" emails?

What does In The Area emails consist of? Like hey, I am here, and I want to stop by and chat.

Yes. They do respond.
They respond and say what?

Can someone answer this question please? I also got the complete email.
Thanks!

There is no real time frame that I can discern. I have been complete since July and have had radio silence since then.

Incoming MS1 here, so I can't speak on very much aside from my interview and second look experiences – which were awesome. I'm sure the MS2+s will be much better sources. Just want to say that I am pumped to matriculate here and cannot wait to meet (and possibly host!) some of you guys for interviews!

Stats [source]
~6,500 applicants
~4,500 secondaries completed (though no screen)
~600 interviewed (MD) + ~60 interviewed (MSTP)
As per interview day, about 200 are accepted, 200 waitlisted, and 200 rejected.
~250 total acceptances
118 matriculated (10-12 MSTP students)

Looking at these post-interview stats are really helping me ease my nerves. But does anyone know what year this is from and if it is still applicable to our cycle? I hope it still applies, but the post-interview rate just seem a little high to me.

still applies to this cycle. I think the variability for total final acceptances is in how many they decide to take from the waitlist, but the ~200 values are correct.

What do people think about sending in an update this week before decisions come out? Would it have any influence or would it essentially be a waste given how close it is to the release of decisions?

Second, how are writing sample updates generally received? I ask because for my one graduate course I wrote a white paper and the subject matter is highly relevant to one of the major conversations I had with my faculty interviewer. My thought would be that showing my work on an issue we discussed demonstrates how personal the material is to me.

My gut tells me sending an update with a writing sample at this time, however, would have no effect. Just wanted to know if others feel the same.

Personally, I don't think an update will sway a decision for the current release. My interviewer told me a committee hearing on my case would more than likely occur 2-4weeks after my interview date.. which means my decision most likely has been solidified for 2 months +. I have a decent update and am waiting to hear the decision before I send it.

Okay, sounds like we are on the same page: save the update for a potential waitlist.

Good luck!

Those are from last year's cycle, but I believe the numbers ought to hold for this year. Hang in there guys – the first release date ought to be coming up sometime soon!

As acceptances start rolling in and people start weighing their offers, you are more than welcome to PM me regarding Hopkins (especially now that we only have one more exam left for the semester – aw yeaaaaahhhh). If I can't answer your questions, I will try my best to connect you with someone in the class who can!

Edit: or just tag me in this thread with questions. However, I'm only an MS1 so I can't really give you much insight (other than what trickles down from upperclassmen) in regards to the clinical years.

II last night as well!!! Complete email 9/4, also January interview date

Complete email 12/5 or so....which means at this rate, I will hear from them..never (or at least after their interview season is well over). My own fault, applied late late late!

I did the same for several schools, too (secondary burnout after applying to 40+ schools). Welp, hopefully it works out. Either way, it's over (the secondaries, I mean). Phew!
omg you're a champ, I could barely finish/afford 14 secondaries!! But that piggy bank though ... 🙂😛

My wallet is about as depleted as my energy for this cycle. Good thing is that all the stress reached an apex and now I'm just rolling with it. It'll work out one way or another. Not ideal, but I can't fret about it much longer. I'm just glad all the apps are done--being away from work so long made me seriously edgy!

Hey, you never know! After I was complete I heard back from some schools who couldn't possibly have been at my complete date yet, and others will probably never give me the time of day. I have no idea what goes on but it might not be completely chronological. Rooting for you!

Awww thanks! 🙂

Thanks everybody! I got an email from the admissions address that linked me to my portal where a new link with the decision was available. Friendly advice: DON'T FORGET YOUR PIN NUMBER, I was hyperventilating while trying to find it and it wasn't fun

so are they getting back to us early or did you guys interview early?

Rejected. Congrats to everyone!
Same here -- many congrats to everyone else. It wasn't the most practical choice for me for personal reasons, and I have no doubt my ambivalence showed in the interview, which I immediately thought had gone badly. It's good to know I'm not alone, though!

Rejected as well. Congrats to everyone who was accepted. See ya in the match, Hopkins 😉

I interviewed ~a month ago, and I'm not seeing anything in the portal. Have any November interviewees heard back?

@bumblebee611 sorry for the bad news. Do you mind elaborating on why you thought your interview didn't go well?
