2015-2016 Johns Hopkins University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected too 🙁 I thought the interview went really well...unfortunately no feedback so don't know what went wrong...Congrats to everyone who got accepted!

@bumblebee611 sorry for the bad news. Do you mind elaborating on why you thought your interview didn't go well?
I am a much older nontrad (43!) and I have a lot of crazy personal stuff in my backstory. It's one of those "compelling" life experience things, but there are good and bad ways to talk about these things--you can either show strength, development of character, and the like, or you can end up sounding weak and apologetic. My interviewer asked me about a bit of it in a way that for some reason just set me off emotionally and I didn't cry but I was close. He wasn't mean or anything, just maybe not the warmest or friendliest. Ultimately I got derailed and I wasn't able to present myself in the best way. I did well in my other interviews and maybe in part I choked because it was Hopkins--who knows. It's okay, though; I am very pleasantly surprised with how my cycle went overall.

Thanks for sharing, and sorry to hear about how uncomfortable this might have been. All the same, congratulations on your accomplishments; and your determination is also remarkable!

Accepted! Surprised considering I thought I did the worst of all my interviews here. Best of luck to everyone!

Edit: I yelled "F*** yeah Hopkins" while at work when I read the decision. Probably getting fired. Totally worth it though.

Is Hopkins still sending out invites?
Also, do they send out preinterview rejections?
Haven't heard anything yet.... Was somewhat hopeful because of my strong bioengineering background but we'll see how this goes. Good luck to all!

Has anyone gotten a more concrete date for second look? (I need to take days off pretty far in advance for the next few months) Ms. Mazza was "ehhhh, I think April 8th...", but they may not have decided when I interviewed...

Awww guys, reading these made me so happy! :,)

Congrats to those accepted – be sure to ride that high through the next few months! And to those waitlisted or rejected, I know you've probably heard this over and over again to the point where it sounds like a tired old cliche, but it's totally fine. The admissions process is one crazy beast. You're all going to do stellar.

SLW IS APRIL 15th-17th! Pencil it in to your calendar. Med19 is already chugging away at plans.

Attended last year's, had a blast, 4.5/5 stars would highly recommend to a friend. (Would have been 5/5 stars if there was Nutella).

Posting for my best friend with a LM~80 (I think) who was waitlisted here yesterday. Does anyone know from past years if JHU consistently uses their wait list?

On a side note, the girl from my high school that posts on Facebook all the time about various ex boyfriends leaking her nudes did get in here yesterday. So, yeah, I have to agree that this is just a crazy process that doesn't make sense alot of the time.

Alternate list or wait-list?
The wait-list has been referred as a "soft reject."
However, the alternate list is typically extensively used (10-30 people); you never know year to year. A lot of the MS2's I met came from the Alternate list, so there is hope!

Hmm..so there is a distinction between the wait list and alternate list? I was under the impression that the wait list and alternate list were the same thing?

The way I've read about it and the way Ms. Mazza explained it on interview day was alternate means you have a chance, but they've never exhausted the alternate to proceed into the waitlist. Unless they randomly changed this protocol ...

Sounds like a new protocol? As of last year, about 200 are accepted, 200 waitlisted, and 200 rejected. [x] Typically, ~50 people are accepted off of the waitlist, but I've never heard of a special alternative list pool. The first acceptance off the waitlist last year happened on April 19th and I know a good chunk of people in my class who were ex-WLers. One of my good friends got off mid-summer and had to do a lot of last minute changes – not the most ideal situation, but an acceptance is an acceptance. Once May hits, the inter-institutional WL ripples will likely be making big waves.

Anyone involved in the JHU adcom process can confirm/deny the alt list?

As for the girl from your HS, I'm glad her crazy exes didn't hold her back!

I interviewed ~a month ago, and I'm not seeing anything in the portal. Have any November interviewees heard back?
Everyone who interviewed in Nov or after is getting their decisions released with the batch on ~Jan. 30

+ 1

Just wondering because acceptances are already going out. When do they start sending out rejections?
Check this out, guys:
"Good Morning,

As some of you may have heard, we delivered a batch of admissions decisions yesterday afternoon. Congratulations to those of you who were admitted. For the alternates, we know that it must be frustrating that you still have no final resolution as to your status but please note that you still have a good shot later in May. Also, a number of the applicants who were interviewed were notified that they were no longer under consideration.

We will send a large number of final decisions next week to anyone who has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee but not offered an interview. We are still reviewing applications for interviews and have slots available throughout January and February, so keep your fingers crossed (and your patience) if you have not yet heard from us.

Have a great Wednesday."

Very helpful. Thanks.

Just wondering, since I received the complete email near the end of Sept, and figured I should either be receiving an II or rejection soon. Lol.

You never know.. I'm not sure if they implement a re-review pile for "maybes," so don't give up hope if you don't hear something immediately.

Well hopefully I won't get an email from Hopkins med next week then! 😉 Not trynna get news of a rejection from a top choice that close to the holidays.

Sooooo if we interviewed on October 30 should we be expecting to wait until January haha?

I'll be in the area around January 9th, and considering sending an ITA email. Someone asked earlier, but didn't get a response. What do these emails consist of? I don't know much about them, what are they supposed to do? Thanks, and congrats to all the admits!

for those that have already interviewed and especially those that have heard back... do you think not being an active participant in the whole fishbowl/waiting room with the 4th years will be a detriment? I had to rush out of there because I had someone waiting on me and am not sure what impact it will have since I had so little interaction. I didn't really get to meet all the 4th years...mainly just one of them who kept insisting I shouldn't stay if I were already done with interviews. I mean for the brief moment I was in there, I was pretty socially competent and my actual interviews went well. But in hindsight maybe it would have been better to stay??!! ahh I don't know how much it matters...worrying about the interview post-interview sucks

I had very little interaction with the fish bowl -- maybe five - ten minutes total. Had an early student interview and basically ran to my faculty. When I got back, no one was there save a person and the MS4s. Chatted a bit then ran off to get ready for a special interest meeting. My MS4 told me to jet and there was absolutely no penalization towards it.

thank you so much for the reply. gonna put my fears to rest for the time being!!

Damn. Might as well withdraw now 😉

Re-re-re-re-jected post-sec, pre-II. LizzyM~70, knew it was the biggest long-shot and honestly am not disappointed whatsoever, I have some other great choices 🙂 Congrats to everyone accepted and best of luck!

Rejected preinterview today. LizzyM 77, strong ecs/leadership, couple pubs, ivy league ug. Thought we were a good fit Hopkins 🙁 Oh well

Rejected pre-II as well.
Good luck to everyone still in the running!

Omg jhu rejection train has started. Nervous now! (although legitimately I rejected them for my postdoc., so I guess would only be fair.)

Sorry about the rejections guys, when were all of you complete?

For those accepted -- after signing the statement of intent there wasn't any deposit we had to pay, right? Also, was anyone else super confused by the accept-decline description...? I spent a solid 5 minutes making sure I wasn't declining my spot, haha.

Rejected pre-interview today, submitted late July, LizzyM~73. No hard feelings, it's so competitive! Congrats to all those who got in and good luck to those still waiting.

I pressed yes.. I was very confused also haha I didn't see a deposit

I just received an email from Ms. Mazza confirming the receipt of my statement of intent, so you'll probably receive that as well!! 🙂

I did, if I waited like 2 hours before posting I would've had an answer haha.
