Hey hella, thanks for being here! 🙂 I was wondering what is worthy of a post-interview update. I mean I want to let them know I'm very interested but I don't want to bother them either. So I'm going to be submitting my thesis shortly and working a new job, but do they really want to hear about that? And what kind of things would you update them with?

One of the posts I answered yesterday was from someone who said she heard a rumor that half the interview slots have already been filled for this cycle. Nothing could be further from the truth: we still have a majority of applications to review and a majority of interview slots are still available. The deadline is on October 15 (with a December 1 deadline for the secondary application): we would would be crazy to grant half the interview slots when we haven't reviewed half the applications. I suspect someone was trying to "psych" the individual who wrote (and apparently it worked).

This follows the belief that many seem to have, which is you must submit your application early or you risk not receiving an interview invitation. As I have written before, this is not true. While there may be some medical schools who statistically grant a higher percentage of their interview slots to candidates who submit an early application (I am not referring to Early Decision Program applications, which we do not have), that is not true for most of us. I believe that you should apply when you are absolutely ready, and that means you submit once you have your courses, grades, activities, letters, etc., ready for review, not when you think it may help you because you are applying early. These premature applicants are the same folks who write later and say they want to update their application with new grades or activities or whatever, only to be told we only accept updates after they've interviewed. We do this because we review applications as soon as they are complete. We cannot re-review an application just because they have sent to materials, so it really is a waste of their time and effort. It is different after the interview, as this is a much smaller number of candidates.

So the take away here is submit when you are complete and ready and know that we have plenty of interview slots (especially this early in the process)."

Uh, I don't think you should read into things so harshly. I met a lot of MS1's and MS2's outside of the interview session and many were interviewed late in the cycle (submitted/complete relatively early, all before mid Sept.) You may be put into a later pile for the Oct-Jan "cycle" of decisions, or even Jan-March cycle. It depends on your fit and more than likely they have re-review piles.

It's not over til it's over.

Side note: I also met A LOT who were pulled from the wait list.

I hope youre right man. I grew up near Baltimore so Hopkins has been the dream for as long as I can remember. I've been complete since the beginning of August and my stats are below their average so I'm hoping they're just deferring me a bit and not taking one look and flat rejecting me haha

I wouldn't worry; my stats were way below average as well, and when they asked me about why I'm not applying to Canadian schools I said my GPA doesn't get me past the cutoff and they said that my "GPA wasn't bad at all" despite it being way below the admitted average. Maybe they were just being nice, but they also told me that they have the resources to carefully review applications and often look past the numbers.

No prob! SDN is kind of split on this issue, with one camp being all for sending however many updates you can get away with and the other advising to only send in major news. That said, I don't know what is the best option... probably somewhere in the middle? Personally, I'd wait until you have your thesis submitted and the new job has begun to take speed. You've got loads of time, since decisions won't come out until December. Hopkins' admission cycle is still young.

I sent in an update about a month after interviewing, as I just had a manuscript accepted for publication and was now leading a project at my job. Don't know if it bumped me from a possible WL -> acceptance or if it had no impact, but I suppose I'll never know.

This assumes the process is linear. We have no evidence that it is any such thing. In fact, we've been told countless times that every school has several large "maybe interview" piles as screenings proceed.

I second this post. When I was there a bunch of students interviewed in December and still got in and are doing really well!

Yep, they set you up for one night with a student from a list they give you, but I think you have to contact them to see if they're still available.
 
Just submitted my secondary...do I have any hope at all of getting an II? Or am I way too late? I have 515 MCAT with 3.95 sGPA and 3.79 cGPA

nah, you're good. of course, submitting ASAP is always ideal, but i wouldnt count yourself at all at this point. especially with such a high GPA and MCAT!

It just seems like everyone on here submitted their stuff in like two weeks, whereas I waited two months lol ahhhh
 
I am in love with this school. The interview day I had was perfect. I think what impressed me the most was that each student I met was passionate about something (women's health or medical advocacy, etc.) and was finding ways to work with that interest. I hope that I will be blessed with good news in December -- it's going to be a long wait until then. Best of luck for anyone applying!

Check the first page of this thread, but its one faculty and one-student relatively open file (I'm not sure if they have your stats, but it seemed like they had everything else including LORs).

My faculty definitely had my GPAs. I believe my primary was in front of them with my secondary. The student had my ECs and statements; we didn't talk about grades.
 
No IIs sent out from Johnny Hopkins lately or what..?

Looks like it's been two weeks so hopefully another batch is due out soon? I didn't get mine in until the beginning of October so I have a little bit more waiting to do :/

Hopefully! I submitted mine in the ending of September so Im in a similar boat.
 
Current undergrad here (lots of research and volunteering experience at Hopkins medicine). Why won't you love me Hopkins! Submitted beginning of August. Counting away my days.
