2015-2016 Oakland University (Beaumont) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Submitted and Complete on July 10th. Just goes to show you how MD schools place a huge giant overwhelming emphasis on a single standardized test. 6+ years of building an app that is otherwise "fairly competitive" thwarted by one 4 hour test.

I know someone that interviewed at Oakland with a 24 last cycle. I think they really do look for "fit" more than stats. I am also expecting my first rejection to come from Oakland, but you never know! Don't let this one setback make you lose hope. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. I'm sure that your app will get love from other schools if you applied smartly! I wish you nothing but the best of luck 🙂

Eh, it would be fine if it was my only rejection so far, but I've been rejected from here, WVU, and probably VCU based on their status updates.

I dont have a single II from any MD school either.

I also had an MCAT lower than 30 as a traditional ORM applicant and was accepted to OUWB for this year. I was also accepted to multiple other schools despite my MCAT, and for several of those schools I didn't receive interview invitations until the winter/spring. OUWB is truly looking for a good fit, as are most other schools, and looking at the people I've met in my class so far, it shows. Like a previous poster said, your MCAT alone will not do you in, so don't get discouraged, especially if your MCAT is the only weak point in a "fairly competitive" application, and especially when it is still so, so early in the cycle. Good luck and keep your head up!

Dont you think that its scary to get rejected from 4 MD schools so early in the cycle though? Especially when you are only applying to 23?

Dude, I mean this in good faith, but you should get off SDN for a while and go outside and exercise and enjoy life. You are reading into this way too much and it is going to drive you insane.

It is so early in the cycle. Many applicants apply early and don't hear back for month and months and still get accepted. WVU is notorious for screening OOS. I VCU takes a while to send out apps in waves. There are so many different factors, it is impossible for you to know anything. Accepting this fact is key for anyone to have a healthy mindset.

fellow sub-30 MCAT here, do you mind posting or PM-ing me where you got interview invites/were accepted? Congrats! I hope I have as successful as a cycle as you!

Anyone else apply first day and still not hear anything? Not complaining or anything, it's better than a rejection, just kinda curious.

Same here, only I think I was actually considered complete on 7/10 because of my LOR's.

I applied 7/8 and got an interview invite today. I'm sure you'll hear from them soon. I was very surprised that I heard back so soon.

Not to sound creepy but I'm pretty much your biggest fan. Taking from your posts, you have virtually the same stats and relatively speaking same background. I too got rejected today. For all the medical schools that are hellbent on "diversity" and serving "underserved populations" which my application addresses, I'm shocked that that I've gotten rejected so early by schools that aren't by any means reaches.

I guess all we can do is wait and hope for a miracle.

0 II's 4 rejections!!! Excelsior!

haha.. Yea I used my background for diversity essays as well. Yea I dont know man, guess nothing we can do besides wait.

When I applied there I had no idea that Beaumont is Michigan's #1 ranked hospital. Getting really excited to interview there!! In about a month!!

Haha-- only 23??

And perhaps a little conceited . . . probably not the only reason you were rejected based on the school's average MCAT of 30.

Best of luck to all! Remember, waiting can be wonderful!! Or not . . .

I think conceited is the last word you could probably use to describe me. Especially if you look at my posts across this forum. All I was saying is its generally the first thing in my application that someone

is like "oh... that doesnt look too good". And I mean I dont deny... I get that a 29 MCAT isnt that great.

Edit: Plus, I've been working hard on my EC's since freshman year of college.... and I have an above average MD gpa...... I dont understand how you can call that conceited when my MCAT score is the weakest part of my application. Basically I have no idea what else could be going on with my app. I've sat down at just looked at it for a while trying to figure out why I'm getting rejected left and right.

Dude, instead of speculating, you can call the school and schedule an advising appointment. They do phone advising calls and they're very nice and respectful and really go through your application during the advising call. I would truly recommend it.

Yea I just did that not too long ago. I was just responding to Buckybadger's comment.

IF/When I get rejected I plan to do that. I really wanna know why all I've been getting are silences 🙂 then again its SOOOO EARLY.

Guys....it is SO early. If you weren't on SDN you wouldn't think anything of not having IIs before August. When this cycle started I told myself that if I didn't have at least two IIs by OCTOBER then I would apply to DO schools. It's not even August yet!

I wish it was just SDN... my real life friends have II =/

I definitely agree with all the posters saying that constantly being on SDN can create unrealistic expectations. This morning, I was frantically thinking about my lack of II's when "everyone else" is getting them. Then I realized 1) it's July and 2) my primary was just verified on the 22nd. I was being so ridiculous!!

By stalking these school threads, it's really easy to get that way. I just have to limit my SDN time and go do useful/relaxing things. 🙂

Gandy741-- I apologize for the slightly aggressive tone of my post, but I stand by the content. Allow me to clarify.

A 29 is not a death sentence-- it's only one point below Oakland's average. I thought it was strange that you believe rejections were due to that MCAT score. There's so much that goes in to a med school app and I'm not sure how you can say that everything else about your application is fantastic and that rejections MUST be due to your MCAT score. Like Ophthoseidon said, plenty of people get in with 27s and 28s.

I definitely didn't mean that as a personal attack! I'm just here waiting around for my Oakland rejection too! Best of luck with the rest.

Honestly, I've heard this school is more about finding the "right fit" people for their school. Maybe it has to do with ECs and research. Oakland only interviews students with substantial research and clinical experience. My MCAT was lower than yours and I got an interview here... 29 is fine at tons of schools. It's more about what the rest of your app looks like. Best of luck everywhere else.

On another note... ive been complete since july 1 and nothing 🙁

I've got a whole lot of nothing everywhere else. I just talked to - friend who happens to be a professor emeritus at a top 20 school. He said the bulk of IIs go out between October and December. So let's just chill out and enjoy the dog days of summer!

Rejected today via email. Still not sure why I submitted an AMCAS with a 29 MCAT.
Perhaps this had to do with one of the "desired criteria for selection". For instance, going through this application process I really wish I would have focused more on "Excellence in an activity or area of interest (sports, research, or other endeavor) at a local, regional, or national level" during my undergraduate years more. I left my teams title as back-to-back intramural dodgeball champions off of my application and I regret it 🙁 hopefully my research and other contests will cover this category. Oakland is one of the only schools I know of that explicitly states this, but thinking about it, I definitely see the benefits in recruiting students who pursue (and are successful) in anything that they are passionate about. I have no idea what any admissions committee thinks or what the rest of your app is like, but that could always be an area of improvement for any applicant.

Same here I am going to drive myself nuts waiting. It's still early and I'm sure we will receive good news soon 🙂.

Rejected this afternoon by email. Oh well, back to the grind.

Got a II here this morning!
Submitted (and I think marked complete same day): 7/8
MCAT 31, to add a data point to what seems to be the big question around here.

This is very exciting! Good luck, team!

"Applicants should submit a minimum of three letters of recommendation (maximum of five). If your premedical advising office provides a committee letter compiling feedback from multiple sources, this letter will count as two of your three required letters of recommendation. All letters should be submitted through AMCAS Letters of Evaluation/Recommendation Service. "

What? My Committee Letter was combination of 5 LORS. Can anyone confirm?

I was complete like July 2nd and still hvnt heard a thing... I think they lost my app

When I hear people got rejected or invited for interview and check my phone to see if I was notified of anything

Lol I feel like all 23 schools just lost my app. Zero post secondary rejections/ II's lol. I just want to know!

Tell me about it! I've had nothing but silence.

Put in my primary here on Saturday...got my secondary today.
Keep moving forward..... (18/25 finished..)

Yesterday, I ran into a friend of the family who is a professor emeritus at a top 20. He said he was surprised I got an interview invite so early. He said only "less competitive" schools send invites this early and that before fall semesters start there is hardly any admin staff actually working! My point is, this is a long LONG process (~6 months) and we are just getting started. We have done everything we can do and all the hard work to get in is done. Let's try to enjoy ourselves!

Ok, now back to incessantly checking email.....

Agreed, it's very very VERY early. A majority of people haven't even had their AMCAS applications verified yet. Also, it seems that state schools send out early interviews to in-state applicants or OOS applicants with strong ties. I have had complete silence from privates!+pity+

So everyone is talking about the "fit" here, what exactly are they looking for? I admit I don't have the greatest amount of community service on my app. 34 MCAT, 3.92 GPA, and a lot interesting (albeit not clinically related) extracurriculars
