2015-2016 Rosalind Franklin University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Had to drop the original date to see open slots so it's like a gamble. But isn't it also true for med school? And for life?

Ok thanks for the info!

And we're you able to view that there was open dates without having to drop the current date that you had? Or did you need to drop it in order to see the other options?

Thank you!

I did some very basic analysis of CMS' match results, and it's not too bad to be honest. I'm considering EM as my primary choice heading into medical school, but depending on how the future shakes out I could see myself gunning for Derm or Ortho. I consider those two + Urology to be the hardest residencies to land. I also think Derm has the greatest chance of surviving a very negative climate for medicine going forward, as it's a procedure heavy (thus lucrative) specialty but with procedures that are minor enough to feasibly subsist on self pay, and also cosmetics. So there is only so much the gubmint and insurance companies can do to squeeze derms dry. With either Tulane or CMS, I'll be over 300k in debt so this is a very important consideration for me.

Anyway, in 2014, 13 out of ~180 CMS grads matched into those 3 residencies. For Tulane, that number was 11/~190, and roughly half was for New Orleans or the Military, which I wouldn't be too enthused over. For UIC's Chicago campus, it was 16/~175.

I guess the upshot of all this is that reputation aside, the proof is in the pudding. It doesn't seem like CMS students are any worse off than students at other mid-tier schools that have better reputations when it comes to the actual match results, which is the important thing.

I realize that the campus is far from Chicago and it wouldn't make sense to travel there too often, but here is the thing. That's only true during the first two years. In the clinical years I read it's common to move to the city as that is where the bulk of rotation sites are. Even in the M1/M2 years, you probably don't want to be spending too much time away from the books, so taking a few expeditions to the city every now and then is all you'd have time for regardless of the distance.

But the kicker is the sticker price. CMS costs 50k, Tulane 60k. With compounding interest taken into account this represents a difference of over 50K for the duration of med school. I'm not sure what I'm seeing from the match list justifies the premium, and when you throw in my location preference, it becomes a close call.

Anyway, I did not mean to hijack the thread. The take-away here is that CMS is not that bad.

It comes down to this. Do you want to train in Chicago or New Orleans? Either school will get you to where you want to go.

I would agree. CMS's tuition is pretty steep but I like the fact that the tuition is locked in for all 4 years.

I appreciate your thoughtful analysis.

is there a portal on here that I can check my status. It for real has been like almost two months...

Also, is it true that interviews have already been given out till March. If so, ****. lol (where did you all hear that piece of news)

When people get ii, then report the earliest date is March I presume...

Rosalind Franklin usually isn't a lot of people's first or top choice, so as people get accepted or get an abundance of interviews, they're likely to withdrawal their application/interview, so earlier dates will surely open up sporadically.

When I got my II, the only available date from 2/12 but I kept looking at the interview times a couple times per day and scored one for this friday (10/30). Listen to what Fedekz is saying.

Does Rosalind Franklin call or email for acceptances?

For all those who have been asking about the biochemistry lab requirement (@Lord Humongus, anyone else i have forgotten), I just called them, and the lady was very nice. It's worded in their academic catalog that an advanced course with a laboratory might act as a replacement to the biochemistry lab, or research experience. I have taken a different advanced chemistry course with a lab and have some research experience (not related to medicine) at a production company.

Long story short, she basically said if she had to guess, that the board would permit me to not have this exact class, but allow me to use my other experiences/courses to count towards that. She reiterated several times, though, that she, herself, cannot guarantee that they will be able to bypass that 'lab requirement', and that the board would have to decide... However, she did make it sound like it would be reasonable for them to permit me. (I have a chemistry degree, and like I said, have worked in labs for three years).

Hope this helps! I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but I'm not worried about this requirement anymore!

edit: also, she said this is a question after the interview stage (i.e. acceptance).. so definitively I guess we won't know until after we've been accepted, if this will be sufficient.

Thank you for taking the time to contact them about this. I didn't realize that I might have to worry about this until Lord Humongus brought it up. Hopefully my research experience would bypass the requirement

I also do not have the biochemistry with lab but figured that is a problem for future me to figure out if I do get in. I emailed them to see what they would say and if I get any new information I'll let you know.

also, I'm slowly moving up in the interview line (for those of you who want to move up, there should be some available in november and even october if you log on now). I moved from 2/5 to 1/15 to 1/8. Waiting for one of those December dates to open up!

Just got the email response back about the lab requirement. For my background: I took two years of chemistry with lab, including the courses “introduction to general chemistry,” “chemical analysis and equilibrium,” “organic chemistry I” and “organic chemistry II.” This is the standard chemistry sequence at my undergraduate institution. I then took “biochemistry pathways and processes,” a non-lab class taught through the Biology department. I did not take any dedicated laboratory research courses but had significant independent research components to many of my lab courses, including organic chemistry, ecology, animal physiology, and marine biology. Each of these lab courses required designing and carrying out an independent research project of the course of the semester.

Here is the response from CMS "It appears as though you have met our prerequisite requirements, you can use the advanced research laboratory coursework to satisfy the Biochemistry lab requirement."

A pretty generic response but... like I said, that is for my future self to deal with.

Thank you so much for posting this. I feel so much better

Still haven't gotten the axe yet and been complete since the very beginning of August. Fingers still crossed!

Do all acceptances go out simultaneously? I haven't received anything and am already nervous having interviewed 9/11.

Has there only been one reported acceptance? Is that strange?

Edit: I think last few years have gone out in afternoon pacific time (like cystic duct said). Maybe that early acceptance was an anomaly lol. I bet the secretary accidentally sent it early. Stop ****ing with us!!

Got the interview email and in the next ten minutes all the dates until Feb filled up!!!

Dang I just got my complete e-mail yesterday...so discouraging to hear that there are pretty much only 2 months of interview spots left and I still have to wait another 8-10 weeks before I hear back.

Good luck to those interviewing here

There will be so many withdrawals from interviews, don't even worry about it!

I'm expecting a post-interview wait list here. Guess we'll find out soon..

Why? I don't think they've really released acceptances yet. Wait until tonight/tomorrow night
I guess so. Do you know how long after the initial wave of acceptances they send waitlist emails? Or is it at the same time?

Idk I think they send them same day or a day later. But if they sent out acceptances already like 10 sdners would post about it. It seems weird but i think the wave is yet to come

Maybe they're just waiting til after my interview this Friday 😉

Does anyone know how they decide who to accept after the interview? do they review the whole file again or is acceptance just based on the interview?

OMG mine is on Friday and now I'm all "it's 100% interview NO PRESSURE" lol!!! I think I need to stay off sdn for a few days....

Haha, its a chill day, I didn't feel any pressure! The staff makes it really enjoyable.

When did you submit your secondary?

Wait are you being serious? Haha I highly doubt that they ignore everything except for interview! That'd be crazy
This is pretty crazy actually.... Curious to hear more!!

Any chance of hearing back today? Thinking about calling to at least get a sense of whether I should give up hope until next week or not.

We should hear back today. They don't seem to mind calls, so it wouldn't hurt to call if we haven't heard by like one or so!

For those of you thinking you'll hear back today, when were your interviews? They told us 6-8 weeks at the interview but I'm not entirely confident in that timeline being accurate.

Mid sept, but they told us 4-6 weeks... interesting. CMS is like the only school lagging it >.<

During my interview (9/11) they told us 4-6 weeks. The admission committee has met. Now we are just waiting for their decisions to be communicated
