2015-2016 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If anyone who still has access to the secondary can tell me whether this year's application has the questions, "Have you applied to medical school before? If so, for which entering class?" and "Have you been accepted to any medical school before? If yes, explain" I'd greatly appreciate it!

Any thoughts on if it would be okay to declare NY as my "legal residence" for this application if I listed another state on my primary as my state of residence... I'm from NY and went to high school there, but have been living in another state since graduating college for work... I still consider my parents home in NY to be my "permanant" home

I wouldn't write something different to what is on AMCAS.
Also, you are going to have to prove it. If you have a driver's licences, what state is it from? When you pay taxes do you fill out NY state taxes or the other state?
These are ways that schools will determine your residency.

Thanks for the reply! My licence is from new york, but I pay taxes to the other state.

If you genuinely believe your legal residence is in New York, then by all means go ahead and declare it (and be prepared to justify if you are asked about it), but be advised that you should also withdraw your in-state status from the previous state you declared in your AMCAS application. Although I'm no expert, I do believe it would be a red flag/irregularity if any adcoms saw an applicant declare multiple states to be their legal residence.

Yes, it's a red flag to the government too!
You are legally only allowed one official state of residence and technically when you move to a new state and start paying taxes there etc you are supposed to (although many don't) change your license to that state and register to vote in the new state (as a US citizen who grew up abroad I have spent a lot of time dealing with legal states of residence and what that means because when you are a student the rules are different).

If you have changed your mind about which state you would like to declare I would suggest seeing if you can change this on AMCAS ,and as avatarcycle said under no circumstances should you apply to two different state's school declaring yourself as a resident of their state.

Just because you leave the state for X reasons, it does not mean you have to give up your residency. You give up your residency when you claim you have left the state and have no intention of returning. Going to school, receiving a job post graduation, etc does not necessitate a change in domiciliary.

However, claiming two states is a big red flag.

You give up your residency when you claim you have left the state and have no intention of returning...

This is not 100% true. The main time when this can hold true is if you are a student and have moved somewhere for full-time education but your childhood home is out of the state, you do not have to change your residence when you move for education as the assumption is that the move is temporary. If you move for a job or other reason then the assumption is you are making that new state a full-time home.

This older thread talks about residency rules with relation to moving for school but the basic rules are there.

I just want to make sure you have all the information for this as it can be a very frustrating set of regulations to navigate and whatever you decide if you are going to have to prove residency to that particular state school., Legal state of residence rules are something I have spent a long time researching and talking with professionals about due to a multitude of issues I have had.

Thanks for all the input. Just to be clear I am not applying to the state school in my current state. I'm in Massachusetts but I haven't been here for 5 years so I'm not eligible to be in state for UMASS. I never changed my license because I don't have a car or ever drive here. I listed mass on my primary because I didn't know if it would be dishonest to list NY since I don't pay taxes there, but I have honestly always intended to move back to NY eventually and really do consider it my home. Just not sure if emotional ties can = residency or not.

Thanks for the help!

Im still not marked complete. I submitted on the 1oth. Should I contact?

Did everyone get an email saying the secondary was received soon after submitting it? I'm worried I didn't submit the form right or something because I haven't gotten a confirmation email and its been like three weeks...

I did. Have you checked your status yet? It should show on there if they've received your application or not, the link is in the first e-mail they sent.

Submitted on the 13th and still not complete...k. Maybe I will call them on Monday.

I called they said they're just swamped. Seawolf huh?
Typical state school antics smh
jk I really think there's something to be said for devoting more resources to helping schools in times like these. Otherwise people get a bad impression of SUNYs and the like just because their administrative techniques are subpar, which doesn't have anything to do with medical education.

Go Stony Brook! I have confidence that they will pick up the pace in due time, no worries.

Got the complete e-mail today after being concerned it was taking so long like a lot of others. Submitted 7/13

P.S. If you're wondering about your application status, you can go back to the original link of your secondary (something like: https://inf-miv2.informatics.sunysb.edu/Applications/supp_app.cfm?in_id=83441&in_amcas_id=########) and there'll be a link to check your status (something like: https://inf-miv2.informatics.sunysb.edu/vapply/inc_status_check.cfm?in_id=83441&in_amcas_id=########). My guess is that for most people waiting on a complete email, it'll say: "Your application documents are being processed. You will be notified of status updates."

But try putting your own AMCAS ID into the URLs I posted and see if you can get to your own status page! Hope this helps!

^^ It should be in your initial email from SBU also, that's how I've been checking. I'm under consideration and should be notified within 2 months.

The agonizing wait... ugh

On the complete status?
It looks like:

Soooo... How many words in a page?
I followed the traditional definition of size 12 pt, 1 inch margins. So one page in that case would be 350-370 words. If you use other parameters it can obviously be longer, but it is tough to argue that >500 words is still "one page" by most people's judgments.

Can someone please help me, I am struggling with the question, "DESCRIBE AN OBSTACLE YOU'VE OVERCOME AND HOW IT HAS DEFINED YOU". I am planning on writing about how I had an obligation to help my family and start work at the age of 16; however, I have touched on the subject in my Personal Statement already. Should I write about this subject in greater detail or will this seem that I am unidimensional and have nothing else to say?

My personal opinion is its okay. I feel at one point your going to have to repeat yourself. Especially having to work so young is going to obviously play a large part in your life. I think the more important thing is the story of how you overcame it, what you learn etc.
Thats just what I feel tho.

I'm trying to Submit my Secondary, but whenever I click "Pay Now" it says Service Unavailable. Did anyone else encounter this issue? Could this be a formatting problem from the text I entered?

"Service Unavailable" points to a server/Internet problem. Try different browsers, try different Internet connection. If that doesn't work, try on a different day, maybe Monday so they can get their servers together.

Great! Thanks for the info! The interesting thing is, I had a similar issue with UCLA when I tried to submitting as well. it said, "Internal server error occurred," apparently they the site doesn't allow entering a new line from another document. Was able to fix it that way. I'll try to re-enter my essays and see if that works, otherwise I'll do what you advised! Thank you so much!

Just submitted my primary here. Very much hoping for some OOS love.
Im so nervous! 😳

Did anyone resolve the Service Unavailable issue?

A/s/l? 😛
lol jk thanks!
I snorted outloud reading this.. so ladylike, I know.
I'm just gonna float in the bay until November, I think .. Someone pass me a LI iced tea? 😀

Dang... I submitted my secondary on the 25th of July and they said that it would be another 2 weeks till verification!!

Can anyone confirm that the school requires an individual Cell Bio or Genetics course, or just course content consisting of these topics?

Biology
– 2 semesters with lab, one of which should include a course in cell biology or genetics

I submitted 2 weeks ago.. I still have this message when I check my status:
"Your application documents are being processed.
You will be notified of status updates"

Anyone in the same boat? Should I call em?

No? You're all set and you just wait.

You'll probably be submitted by next week; I called and they say it takes roughly 3 weeks to confirm 🙁

Got an email today saying that my application has been received and processed, just my LORs are missing...am I reading too much into it if the word "processed" is equating to "judgment already passed" in my head? Ugh
