2015-2016 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How long did it takes for you guys to become complete?? My LORs were in on August 17th and my status still says that it's missing LORs. Haven't got a complete e-mail either. I'm going crazy!! This is my top choice and it's my last school to be complete 🙁
Looks like we are on the same boat. My letters were in on the 17th too so you are not alone.

Did my B.S. and M.Sc here and still nothing. They probably want me to go elsewhere... They are probably saying, "MOVE ON already, Miss Kitty! Move on!" Haha.

I'm super jealous of your IIs so far after looking at your MDapps haha, do you have any ties to Hawaii?
Haha! Thank you! I am really excited for the Hawaii interview. So in need of a vacation.

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, which is what they call Hawaii's "Ninth Island," and my best friend and family friends live 20 minutes from UH, but no technical "ties" if you mean relatives? I grew up in a heavily populated Hawaiian area, took tahitian dancing classes growing up, and have many close Hawaiian friends/families that are basically my own family and I explained that in my secondary.

First in-state II! Super excited to have the chance to visit this school

Anyone else going on Oct. 6th?

So I'm looking at options to get to Long Island from the DC/Baltimore area - flying into the Long Island airport is so expensive, but seems the most straightforward/less stressful. My other option is taking the train/bus/flying into JFK, then taking the train to Long Island - which seems complicated to me with transfers and stuff. Is that actually as complicated as it seems?

Also, for arranging the interview, do we just e-mail with dates we're available, and see if they have openings for that day?

Take an Amtrak train to Stamford CT. Then from Stamford take a train to Bridgeport. At Bridgeport, you can take a ferry to Port Jefferson. PJ is like 10 minutes from the school.

No! That's silly. Take Amtrak to Penn Station, then take the LIRR to Stony Brook. There's a train station less than a mile from the campus.

Is it realistic to get to Stony Brook from NYC on the interview day instead of arriving one day earlier? I just realized that the interview starts fairly late.

Even if you take the LIRR straight from Jamaica station off the AirTran, it is about a 2 hour ride. What time is your flight and what time is the interview?

OH! @y123 Also, the trains to SBU only come so often, BUT trains to Ronkonkoma come more frequently if you are OK with paying $40-ish for a cab from Ronkonkoma to SBU. PM me if anyone has questions on the best way to get there. I have a car so I know the areas and I also am lazy so I know all of the train routes.

The interview starts at 10am. I decided to arrive one day prior to the interview since the morning traffic is not so predictable.

Thanks for the info!

What's Stony Brook's interview format? do they use MMI's? I heard they might be using writing evaluations too?

Best public transportation option is definitely flying into LGA/JFK, bus/taxi/shuttle to Penn Station, then LIRR all the way out to Stony Brook (the town), where I understand there is a shuttle that takes you to campus. Campus is very walkable (since it's a major commuter school).

The Bridgeport ferry only makes any sense if you're from the CT 'burbs, in which case you would've already known about the ferry haha

It would be stupid to take a taxi from JFK to Penn Station when the Air Tran from JFK takes you to Jamaica where ALL LIRR trains go. If you fly LGA, take a taxi to Jamaica Train Station.

The LIRR drops you off ON campus. The station is literally on the campus, and the student buses drive you around campus. And idk what you mean by "walkable" because our school is a "commuter school" but in the middle of trees, and the commuter parking lot has a shuttle bus to it because it is so far from the campus. The hospital and medical school is not even on the same side as the normal university.

Literally... If anyone needs help, PM me: a Seawolf myself (alumni).

Lol I got rekt 🙁

Hey, for those who have scheduled interviews, did you email them with a list of possible dates that work for you?

Yup, they'll try to give you the earliest date from your list

Does anyone know the dates/days that Stony Book interviews?
They interview Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. As far as the dates go, I'm not sure - I sent them a list of dates I can take off from work and they scheduled me for the earliest date I listed.

Any recommendations on where to stay nearby? I'm not driving in so anything close enough that a hotel shuttle can go?

There is a hotel on campus. I want to say it's a Hilton, but it should be on their website so you can check. It'd be like a two minute walk - it's almost right next to the hospital/school.
