2015-2016 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone have links providing further information about the school? I only found this, which isn't the most helpful. I am trying to find unique aspects of the school - what does everyone else find most appealing? Personally, I am interested in their partnerships with labs like Cold Spring Harbor.

I think I wrote mostly about CSH and Stony Brook's location. It's very suburban, but the city is there for a weekend trip if you want to go. I have a feeling that you really need to convince them that that's the kind of environment you want to be in for the next four years.

I have lived in and around Stony Brook, so I know I'd like being there. I moreso wanted to have academically-related taking points for the interview.

Office of admissions told me the interview will end at 2:30 to 3:00pm. Is it possible for me to return to NYC by 6:00pm? Besides 7bus and LIRR, is there any other bus available?

How far is Stony Brook from the LIRR station? Is it possible for me to take the 2:52pm train if the interview ends at 2:30pm?
Is 7bus station far? Will I have time to catch the 2:45pm bus?

I've been complete for over 2 months now with no emails from stony brook. Is this their version of a hold, or does everyone get some sort of email?
No reason to believe it's a hold. They said you'll get email, so wait for the email.

The LIRR is literally ON campus, and there is a bus you can take (outer loop bus) that will drop you off at the station. The only problem is the scheduling, because the train into NYC/Jamaica (JFK) takes a little over 2 hours unless you happen to catch one of the express trains. PM me if you need help. Did my B.S./M.Sc there and live in NYC now 🙂

Takes about about an hour and 45 via train (one transfer usually). I take it all the time. You could get a later train and still get into Penn station at a reasonable time.

I wonder when the next round of interviews will go out.

When did the first round go out? I was complete 7/28.

II this morning! Complete 7/15 (~73 lm)

I'll be in Hempstead in early December so I'll probably schedule it sometime around there; I hope the weather isn't too cold by then ~

Same! I was complete 7/9 and I haven't heard back yet 🙁

How were you notified for II? Did your portal change or did you receive an e-mail? CONGRATZ!

Was invited two weeks ago but I'm assuming it's the same for everyone - email invite telling you they interview certain days of the week, and to coordinate with Ms. Acevedo about scheduling your interview. The portal changed to "Congratulations! You've been invited for an interview!" and after you picked a date, it'll show up on the portal as well.

Congrats to all those that have been receiving IIs! And to those that haven't yet, hang in there! If there are any questions pertaining to the interview, programs, or the school itself, feel free ask the questions here or PM me. I will try my best to answer most, if not all.

Any suggestions on how to get from MacArthur airport to the university? Is taxi the quickest way?

The portal says: "The expected date of a final decision on your candidacy is approximately two months from the date of application completion."

It's been tow months for me >__< so nervous

Your only other option is to take the Ronkonkoma LIRR back into Manhattan and then back out into Stony Brook 😉 which obviously makes no sense lolol.

I wouldn't even fly into MacArthur..but if you do, yes taxi is your only way of getting to SBU

My wallet just cringed thinking about flying into MacArthur.
Issue with flying into JFK / LGA is potential late flights. LIRR out east is not as active or takes 3x longer past peak hours. (Sitting in Huntington for an hour is pretty common)
Plan accordingly !

does stony brook have student hosts?
In their II email, it is said there are very limited host resources and should be reserved for those very much OOS (essentially), but it was phrased in a way that said "Don't expect much."

They do, but it took them about a month to find me one, and I was alerted a couple days prior to my interview; I would request one, but also reserve a hotel in case you get unlucky. (The hotel reservation can always be canceled.)

It has officially been two months and I have heard nothing! Does anyone know from previous years if such prolonged silence ever led to interviews?! I am NYS resident if that makes any difference.

Same here, id love to know too

II! I was complete 7/13
Don't let go of hope, guys!
It took them almost three months for my II! This process can't define you! Just have fun with your life and as Idina Menzel would say (sing), "Let it go!" Because when we all matriculate next fall, we won't have time for fun. 🙂
