2015-2016 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If it means anything, my friend last year didn't get an interview until late October, and he was complete in mid-July.

Friendly reminder that SUNYs do not review linearly/are not rolling.
Current MSs @ SUNYs have frequently commented on being complete in July/August and not interviewing until Jan/Feb.

Downstate and Upstate are both rolling.... Upstate will be sending out notifications as early as next week.

Yes, I am aware in terms of final decision notifications. Not in terms of IIs. Check DSs website; it's explicitly said somewhere they do not chronologically review.

Does Stony Brook really keep to their two month decision statement? Im almost there and im nervous

Is there anyone on here who was able to find a student host? I e-mailed the admissions office about it, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to stay with one so I booked a room at the Hilton just in case.

I am aware that application reviews are not linear (most know that they are not reviewed in chronological order). I was clarifying the underlined and bolded portion which gave the impression that their admittance policy is not rolling; since "rolling" is most often used in the context of acceptance/WL/rejection. Most SUNY's are very heavily rolling and I know that for example, Stony Brook, fills up their class around late January.

can anyone give post interview feelings / thoughts on the day and interviews?

Students at Stony Brook seem to be happy to be there, and comradery was the most common answer given when I asked why they chose to go there. You will have two interviews, either with two Dr.'s (MD or PhD) or a Dr. and a medical student. My interviews were relatively short, and it seemed this was pretty common, so don't be too frazzled if your interviewer is wrapping up after about 20 minutes. Obviously I can't speak for others' experiences, but the PhD who interviewed me was very nice - we didn't really talk about medicine as much as our common interests. Your interviews will occur either before or after informational sessions and tours.

I can't remember where exactly (probably from the previous cycle's thread) but I read that they send out more info about the interview day a week before your interview - is this still the case this year?

Yes, you should receive an email the week before your interview informing you of the times of your interviews.

Hey guys, I am wondering,

Do you think I should call Stony Brook because it;s been 2 weeks past the 2 month period and, the only thing that I've heard from SBU is just cricket chirps. 🙁

Show me some love dab-nammit!!

I've been complete almost 3 months, so I know how you feel.

That being said, I wouldn't necessarily call. My guess is that they are super busy working through applications, and they will get to yours (and mine) in due time. Just be patient!

How long do you think they'll get to you? are you IS? I personally estimate that I'll be hearing back in halloween or Election day. The wait is killing me!! LizzyM is 66-67

Ready for Review (3 August 2015)

OOS, and I have no clue how long it will take for them to get to me. I would imagine that things will start picking up at a lot of schools after the 15th (when people who are accepted to their top choices withdraw their applications from other schools), but I could be totally wrong. It's really just a waiting game at this point!

Quick Question regarding interview scheduling:
How long did it take you to hear back after you emailed them to schedule an interview. Got the II last week, emailed the person they said to email, but I haven't heard back.
If this is usual, I will wait it out. If not, I can make a call, just don't want to be neurotic.

Ms. Acevedo responded within an hour after I e-mailed. I suggest sending a follow-up e-mail if it has been a week, I imagine their office is busy as interview season is in full swing now.

OOC - someone mentioned here SBU does not do rolling admissions - then how do they review applications...? Been complete and "in review" for quite some time now

For current SBU students. Why did you pick Stony over the other SUNYs / other privates. I know research separates stony from the pack. Anything else that you really liked?

I was gonna make a joke here but I probably shouldn't hahahaha

I liked the feel I got from the current students and administrators when I interviewed / attended second look. Also, the shortened pre-clinical curriculum was a big selling point. We are done with preclinical classes by january of second year and start clinical in march.

interviewed this week and absolutely loved this school. Was not too sure about it going in but the students seemed incredibly happy compared to other schools I've interviewed at. The match list + step scores were excellent. 1.5 year curriculum is fantastic for getting early clinical experience + having time to think about your specialty choice after rotations. Research opportunities galore. Plus the new childrens hospital / multimillion dollar building with classrooms for the med school should be opening up for the class of 2020. Also you can't beat all of this with in-state tuition. Would love to go here!

Almost three months now, haven't heard anything.

II late last week!!! Very excited for an interview at this school. Congrats to all those who are already accepted at Stony!!

Edit: I was complete 8/25..... so I heard back ~7 weeks after completion date.

How legit is this 2 month wait? Are people actually hearing back in 2 months?

It seems like about right I think -- I'm at week 7 and no word, but believe I saw that at week 8 or 9 someone on here heard something. I'd be happy a week early...

Is this for a II or a decision?
