@Rogert did you ever get a response on this? Current 4th year wrapping up a 10 month rural rotation.

No problem. Rmed (the rural medical scholars program) starts in the beginning of medical school. For the first 2 years you meet one night a month to listen to a talk on rural health from someone who had been practicing it for many years. This will count for 3 elective credits (you are allowed up to 6 in the preclinical years). The assignments here are pretty light other than one project at the end of each year.

In third year, you go through clerkships just like everyone else. The difference is in where you complete them. Pediatrics, psychiatry, OB/GYN, neurology, and internal medicine are completed in Syracuse or Binghamton. Family Med, surgery, and emergency med are completed at your rural site. There are 2 variants of the 3rd/4th year of rmed: Prime, a 5 month commitment that adds one month of elective time to the above clerkships, and Traditional, a 9 to 12 month stay depending on your plans. In both you spend your time as the only medical student in a rural community. This can be Auburn, Saranac Lake, Canandaigua, or a dozen other towns. You get some choice in locations based on available sites and whether or not you have competition for the one you want.

The time after your clerkships is spent how you want it spent. Do you want to go into surgery? Then go spend the rest of your rural track in the OR scrubbed into every case. Do you want to go into primary care? There are many outpatient opportunities and quite a few providers in the areas you will be. There are some classmates who would argue that rmed gives you less experience, but this is only true if you end up in a community without your desired specialty. This has only happened once as far as I'm aware and schedules were changed to accommodate the student. Once you are on the ground you get your hands dirty in many ways that just aren't possible at an academic center. In surgery I spent my 8 weeks scrubbed in at first assist doing procedures I wouldn't get to try without doing electives in those areas. I'm 8 months in now and have spent elective time in 6 different specialties in only 4 months of electives. Since I needed a letter of recommendation for residency, I was also able to go back to syracuse for a month to take care of that.

Long story short, you end up deeply embedded in the healthcare of a rural community and get to see the same patient in multiple settings, giving you a very clear picture of the interconnected nature of both the rural community and modern healthcare. If I had to choose all over again I absolutely would not change a thing.

I'll try to update whenever I get the actual email. It will be interesting to see. I'm pretty sure I checked the portal yesterday as well, so it might tell us something.

Is there supposed to be a complete date in your portal? I have 3 different dates for my secondary, secondary fee, and letter of recomendation. Helppp
 
So they sent me an interview confirmation about six hours after I selected my date, but still no emailed interview invitation. I suspect we may never know the answer to this question.

+1 would like to know if other people are seeing a complete date in the portal....


Also for those with IIs, first congrats, second where exactly does it show? On the first page or after you click the admissions term under processed applications?

I got an email after submission telling me I was complete. I assumed that was the complete date. On portal, it only showed the date of each "step" of the application, like LOR loaded.

It shows right after you log in, on the bottom. In huge letters (some are red). Don't need to click the admissions term
 
New to this forum. But, I've been following here and there like a fly on the wall. Lol. I'm happy to write that I got my first II today! I was complete 2 weeks ago. I didn't even check the portal and received an email while I was at work. So, it helps to stay occupied and get a nice surprise in your inbox. Good luck to you all! 🙂

Yeah, I mean if they won't look at us again until the entire pool is evaluated, that would mean we won't be rereviewed until the deadline for secondaries passes, and even if we got an II at that point, a waitlist spot is the best we could realistically expect.

So very slim chance :/

Exactly. They will start the re-review process in January, best case we would get interview in January and I'm assuming over 90% of acceptances have been given to others by then. I don't think we should really count on it but who knows ...

Maybe the hold for oos people is a way to screen who is actually interested? Because by the time they send out January or febuary II many oos people will already have acceptances elsewhere and won't accept these II. Who knows though
