2015-2016 Texas Tech University - Lubbock Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied MD/MBA and interviewed back on October 9th. They couldn't schedule my MBA interview that day so they said they would do the phone or Skype interview. It's been almost 2 months and still no word. What do you guys think is going on? I even called admissions and they said they would make sure I wasn't forgotten.

I applied MD/MBA too, and it took them nearly a month to interview me too. I'd email them to make sure they haven't forgotten though!

Can you PM me what happened?

Sure!

I think they most definitely want to know; admissions is always looking to improve the interview experience. I honestly don't think it would impact your placement, but I understand being wary of complaining. If you don't want to do it officially but would like to PM me, I can anonymously pass it on.
(Anonymous for you, not me, obviously.)

No one wants a misplaced interviewer scaring off great candidates. And if you've scored interviews, you are great candidates!

Thanks! I think I'll just submit it through the feedback form. I don't want the committee thinking I don't feel strongly enough about it to come forward myself.

For those accepted, has anyone received any scholarship correspondence? I know other Texas schools have been offering scholarships already and I'm curious if anyone has received anything from here.

Yes, but I am OOS so that may be why.

are oos applicants effected by the rankings/match process in any way directly?

As in should I be hoping for movement off a waitlist around match time?

My understanding (which could be a misunderstanding!) is that the Texas schools have already extended acceptance offers to the max number of OOS students that they are allowed to accept. In order to get an acceptance now, we have to wait for another OOSer to withdraw. The TMDSAS match won't affect that in any way, so the majority of waitlist movement for OOS will happen around the April 30 AMCAS date instead.

Really? I interviewed as OOS here about a month ago, but haven't heard anything back yet. Do they silently put people on the waitlist?

My interviews here were scary conversational: one that just asked me about my interests and hobbies indicated on my application & one that mostly prompted me to ask questions about the school. I had maybe one hard-hitting question for the day (the standard, tell us about a time you encountered conflict)... I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience, especially those who have been accepted.

Thanks!

I actually thought I had one of the worst experiences here in that none of my answers seemed to impress my interviewers, or that I kept saying the wrong thing. I was pre matched though! the other one was like yours, very conversational, asked about hobbies.

Also: some interviews went out today!

How confident are you in this statement? That seems ludicrous that only people who interviewed prior to Mid-October ish would have acceptances and all the hundreds of OOS students interviewed at most Texas schools simply form a ridiculously long wait list. That would be a horrible system. Not saying you're wrong, I'd just really frustrated if that was correct.

I also hope that it is a misunderstanding. I interviewed at quite a few Texas schools and it's been crickets since then at all of them. I'm basing it mainly off of reading the school threads from previous years. From December onwards, there did not seem to be any/many more OOS acceptances mentioned until late in the spring when others were withdrawing. Could be that acceptances were given out in winter/early spring in those years and that people weren't reporting it on SDN, though. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the process who is reading this will chime in?

I'm OOS and interviewed here Oct 16 (so right after the first round of acceptances went out). From what I understood about what they said on interview day, they would have the second round of OOS acceptances sent out Dec 15. So hopefully that's the case.

Do you know if they said the same for IS?

Thanks!

My first interview was with a 3rd year and we just talked about college football for awhile to start things off... he then asked me a couple questions about why I also applied to DO schools, as well as how I would react in certain clinical/ethical dilemmas. Even then, though, it was all very conversational and in the flow of things.

My second interview was with a family practice doc and was 90% just shooting the breeze. We quickly found out that she had made many humanitarian trips to a part of Guatemala in which I had lived as a missionary for a few years so we just BSed about that. She only asked one direct question that I can remember: "What would you say your greatest strength and greatest weakness are?"

Thank you guys for your replies! I was just worried that maybe they didn't see me as a serious applicant or something. The fact that you guys had similar experiences and were successful definitely makes me feel better 🙂 Congrats on getting in by the way!

For people that have been accepted, have you heard anything else since paying your deposit.....

Ok I got that too, just no official letter or anything. Just kinda weird.
Yeah, I haven't really heard anything either. I suppose they're waiting until normal match day and people are really locked in before giving us more stuff? But a physical letter saying, "hey, you're really accepted and that email wasn't a fluke! Promise. We actually want you here. Seriously" would be nice haha.

Yes this is exactly how I feel! I just want to make sure this is real! Haha a letter would be awesome

Has anyone been accepted to MD then been accepted to MBA at a later date? I interviewed for MD back in October but just had my MBA interview this week. If I originally applied to The dual degree program do you think they reviewed my file without the MBA portion?

@Chillbo Baggins if it is of convenience to you, can you find out the last interview date at TTUHSC Lubbock for this admissions cycle? Many thanks!

I'm actually leaving town tomorrow for break, but my guess is that they will have 2-3 interview dates in January up until you have to submit your rankings list.

Doesn't look like there has been any movement.

For those accepted- as we finish courses for the semester, do we send our transcripts through TMDAS or straight to the school?

I think we just fire em away at both. Just roll with it and start sending em erywhere. Like I always say, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Hey this is for current students and people who know the area well. I've heard there are some apartments that offer deals (like $100 off per month) to med students. Would anyone happen to know which ones those are?

I'll be in Lubbock for the holidays visiting my wife's family and we'll be checking out places to live while we're in town. We've already got quite a few places lined up to look at (I forget what they are off the top of my head) but any extra help/direction would be appreciated!

Ps our price range is something along the lines of 600-950/month.

I'm assuming no one else has received pre-match offers any time recently :/

Everytime I see a new alert for this thread, I start thinking a second round went out and freaking out b/c I haven't heard anything.

I'm not holding out much hope for pre-match at this point. Look at it this way. People who get pre-match offers are highly competitive. It is unlikely that they will only be highly competitive to one school, so many of them, if not most, will get more than one pre match. And probably a good number of those will get more than 2 or 3. They can only go to one school. The Point is, a LOT of the total seats are going to be filled on match day. Hang in there. If you look at the TAAHP report on scribd, you will see that ~70% of IS applicants who got interviews in Texas were accepted. So the odds are in your favor.

Yeah, I thought as much. Was just hoping for an awesome Christmas surprise. Anyways, thanks for the encouragement!

It would sure make my Christmas! I've been secretly wishing too. I think my message was as much for myself as others. It's really hard, but we'll get through it.

do you know if they have already offered 10% of their class to oos applicants? I wonder if they are at the point where they have to wait for people to relinquish their acceptance
