Not to be rude, but your posts sound a little gossipy and purposefully vague (sorry if that is not your intention).

Yes, I also heard that a student committed suicide- and it is very sad. We (or at least I) don't know the story surrounding it or the student's history prior to med school, and I don't really care to speculate on it. I think the important thing for those of us who did not know the student to take away is to remember that we are all under emotional pressure and it's important to check-in with each other and be aware of concerning signs in our classmates.

Tulane has great comaraderie, but in med school it is easy to be isolated

Yes. You were rude. What I heard was from unofficial sources, so I addressed in the best way without disrespecting any place and person. I'd rather know the place before making major life decisions. Should I be sheepish and ignore all warning signs just because of an acceptance?

In terms of safety, during my interview day one of the tour guides talked to us about it some. The school obviously knows that the part of New Orleans it is in isn't always the safest, but they do a lot to make sure everyone stays safe. Like if you are at the library late at night, you can call and have a security guard walk back with you to your car and what not. I, for one, was pretty impressed with the importance they placed on it.

What was your impression of the atmosphere from your interview day if you were accepted? In my opinion it was the most laid-back and student-centered environment among the schools I interviewed at. Personally, I would have felt very well supported if I chose to attend. I would not judge Tulane's camaraderie off an isolated incident but rather the vibe you get from the majority of the students you interacted with.

Again, I'm sorry if it was not your intention, but when someone says they heard some upsetting news and then doesn't say the news it is because they want people to ask questions and were just trying to drop hints about a situation. Especially since your questions could have been asked without the comment and you made a separate thread about the situation. I apologize, and was just letting you know how the comment sounded to me- no hard feelings.

But, no, I would not take it as a warning sign. I doubt there is any med school that started before 2000 that hasn't had a single suicide. I hope other people's comment put you at ease

just give your seat to a waitlister if you dislike the place so much

Ok that seemed a little harsh. Let's all try and remember that 1. This application cycle/entire process is turning us all into crazy people, and 2. It's the internet. Emotions/intent don't get displayed very well in forum posts. Cut the child some slack, and let's all go back being the wonderful, kind human beings people will want to have as doctors one day!

He is on the waitlist, I believe. It was sarcasm that was hard to be understood over the internet (or else, I agree, it was harsh)

This is so well said, I interviewed a bunch of places and I'm a really shy person. The students at Tulane made me feel the most comfortable and relaxed, they were so great it made it feel like I already fit in. Nowhere else even came close in that sentiment. I stayed the weekend with students and I'd bet no where else has more fun after exams. A great balanced life makes a better Doctor. Just wish it was cheaper

I do think that you can budget the cost down (or at least I hope).

My calculations: ($60×4)+ 10K from tuition increases= 250K for tuition.
Rent, you can definitely find $650 or under + $150 utilities--> $800/month--> 9.6K/yr or 38.4K for 4 yrs
Food: 3k/yr--> 12K
Entertainment: $1.4K/year (plus whatever you can save by having cheaper rent/less food)
STEP Related Stuff/Supplies: $5K
--
--> totals $311K plus $10K for residency app (if a competitive specialty) and $10K for loan origination fees (and health insurance if you need it and transport if you aren't biking)

Wishful thinking?

Maybe a little but not a substantial amount of wishful thinking. Depending on your situation if there's any city in the US you can save on expenses outside of tuition and required fees its New Orleans. And though it's crazy expensive it's just as crazy expensive as most other private schools anyways.

Camaraderie is great, safety is ok. Both are heavily stressed and important to both the student body and administration.

Everyone gets along with everyone else here and we treat each other like one big happy family rather than four separate classes. We're all going through this journey together and we make sure to support each other through the good times and the bad that are unique to each class. There's a block party after every exam and the whole school is invited. T1s show up to T3 events, T2s to T1s, and T4s to everything especially now that they're essentially done.

Most recently, we've had ice cream socials, masseuses, cheese deliveries, and puppy visits organized entirely by T1s and T3s to keep the T2s sane during Step studying. Information and Anki decks are passed around within each class and down to the next one when they need it. Someone makes an Anki deck of all the Sketchy Micro videos and they post it to the class Facebook wall to save someone else the work.

All of this is the main reason I chose Tulane because this is exactly the vibe I got from my interview day, and I'm so glad I haven't been disappointed. I feel very fortunate to have ended up here because I don't think many schools are like this, and it's made medical school as stress-free as possible. I'm also really glad you guys are getting that same feeling on your interview day. It's not a front or a show. It really is like this.

As for safety, we're a downtown campus in a very poor city. However, there are systems in place to keep students safe such as the police escorts someone mentioned previously and similar things like that. It's been a big priority for the administration so things are only getting better. Overall, the city isn't any better or worse than others like it for the average Joe. You figure out where to avoid at night, have some common sense, and you'll be fine.

I actually messaged Missorleans and she said that $15K cost of living is doable if you have a roommate- which I was planning on having anyways

I loved Tulane, but I've withdrawn my spot as of ten minutes ago. Really hoping it goes to someone here!

I had a good experience with the interview. But I also learnt some upsetting news since I started doing more research on the school. Anyway, thank you for your answers.

I never said I disliked the place. Having questions about the quality of education and life that I will get from a school is not equal to hating. Grow up.

I don't remember seeing this? did everyone send the tax returns?
I called and was told they don't really need them unless you strongly think it will make a difference to need-based aid. But that may be because I haven't been claimed as a dependent for over a decade, so they weren't really interested in my parents' income. If you're unsure it never hurts to call and ask.

Just withdrew my offer; hope it goes to one of you on the wait list!!

Hey so...
The April 30 deadline is approaching and I still haven't gotten my financial aid.
I called, and they said it was possible I wouldn't get it until after April 30.
But I'd be violating traffic laws if I hold multiple places past April 30.

At the same time, I don't want to make a decision without knowing my financial situation.

Advice? Thanks!

My EFC is $7K. I did not get any aid whatsoever. You should expect the same, especially if your EFC is over mine (No financial aid means all loans, which I refuse to call financial aid because it is in no way aid, haha)

Hmm, I think my efc is 0.
But I get what you're saying., I have in state somewhere else, doubt it'll beat that.
But still, I wanna I see the numbers so I don't feel buyers remorse or anything like that.

It just seems strange to me that my financial aid package is so late.

It is a little strange.

I had another school tell me that they won't give me my package until after April 30th. I contacted the fin aid director about how I would like to make an informed decision on my schools, etc. He told me that it is concerning that I am worrying about cost of med schools when I should be focusing on things like educational environment and the like. Kthxbai. Withdrew from that school, haha.

I don't know if there is anything you can do. They may know that they will be giving you money and just need to wait for what their budget for this year will be. Maybe email Dr. Beckman?

dumb question about something thats not important but it looks in some pics as though the coats given out at the white coat ceremony are blank with no insignia or name of any kind, is this true?

Hate to burst your bubble, but there's already a waitlist thread that's been going pretty strong for a while now, and is full of pretty awesome people (if I do say so myself).
AHH I was looking for it for a while and couldn't find it (as were many others). So, thanks for letting me know :) no bubble is bursted, no worries.

They don't bother putting anything on the free coat because it's possible you'll want to exchange it for a different size, and the bookstore will let you do that for free.

That said, if you want your name embroidered on it later, that's something you have to pay for. I think it was like $15 for embroidery and getting the patch sewn on. You can do the patch yourself though.

On last year's thread it says that people were told whether they were on the high or the low WL. Did any one ask about his/her WL status this year?

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. I'm like 95% sure they will not tell you your waitlist ranking. Idk what you saw in last year's thread, and I guess it's possible it was different lasts year, but I am very much under the impression that we do not get to know where we stand in the wait list.

Can any current students comment on what classes/required labs look like during your average week? I have a few weddings late this summer/early fall that I want to book travel arrangements for and I want to make sure I don't miss any mandatory class/activities.

The first block is anatomy, so I think it would be hard to take breaks then.

You can go to tmedweb.tulane.edu--> Home tab--> T1. Then there is a T1 calendar on the side. You can scroll back to August and look at the scheduled stuff

The schedule doesn't change much year-to-year so tmedweb from this year's T1s will be pretty accurate. As in, the first block of anatomy lasts X number of weeks, etc. so adjust to your class' start date.

You're also allowed 1-2 unexcused absences from anatomy lab per block so you can skip out if you need to. If you need to miss something mandatory, you can request official time off and usually it will be approved if it's for a somewhat legitimate reason. People have postponed exams or missed required classes to go to siblings' graduations, for example, so "somewhat legitimate" can mean a variety of things.

Also, attendance required lectures aren't truly "attendance required". Labs, TBLs, PBLs, etc. are mandatory so keep that in mind when looking at the schedule.

Withdrew my acceptance from here yesterday! Zero need-based grants/merit scholarships resulting in COA being fully financed with student loans was something I couldn't stomach.

Hope my withdrawal frees up a spot for one of you deserving students on the wait list! I loved my interview day here and all my friends who attend rave about Tulane and New Orleans! If it weren't so expensive, I would have attended in a heartbeat!
