2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, after completing my file on July 23rd and hearing nothing but silence since then, I received a rejection letter today.

Same here. The email told me to check my status on their secondary application page. If they're going to reject me, then just please be courteous and tell me so in my email instead of telling me to check the status of my application.

When were you complete? I was complete mid Sept and haven't heard anything but since acceptances are almost out, should I just assume rejection or are there still interviews available?

She told our interview day that they wrap up interviews on Jan 22nd (or close to that date). So I think they're getting close to being done sending out invites, unfortunately

That's okay, rather know now than be in limbo. Appreciate it!

Update: I got the email this morning that the ICON course was up, and I am able to access it.

Also received my Pre-M1 Communications access through ICON this morning.

So excited about possibly attending this school. I interviewed early Dec and fell in love -- Carver is my clear cut top choice.* If anyone wants to ask me about my interview experience, feel free to PM me.

To echo midwestisbest, I predict next Thursday after a final batch of rolling acceptances on Tuesday. Almost done rolling and into the pool we go...

Surely more rolling acceptances will be offered after Tuesday? Especially if interviews are wrapped up at the end of January? I believe I was told mid-January would be the *earliest* that we would hear back, and I can't recall up until when (and the details about Final Pool). Here's to hoping I get good news on Tuesday anyway 🙂

*Side question: I've only recently heard about the idea of letters of intent -- if CCOM is my top choice, should I be sending them one at this point, post-interview?

I've heard leases go quickly and I'm not from the area. Any current students med students or U of I undergrads have experience with Aspire apartments or can comment on their convenience of location? Thanks!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to clarify something regarding the curriculum. The class of 2020 will be the 3rd class following New Horizons correct? I thought I remembered my M1 tour guide telling me the M2s were the first to start it.

Yes -- several of the students I spoke with mentioned this.

I know they pick the majority of IS candidates from final pool, but what percentage of OOS are chosen from final pool?

OOS Interviewed back in November, but still no news. Looking like final pool as others have suggested. Good luck to everyone and dont give up!!!

Any final pool notifications yet?
I suspected today might be the day (it was 15th last year, a Thursday), but I haven't seen anything in my inbox/on my portal. Perhaps tomorrow or next week (I suppose there still is ~an hour today).

It seems people last year were final pooled through the portal... has anyone checked theirs? I couldnt find anything

My portal is still silent. It's a few days to a month since my interview, and I was under the impression that we were told our group could very well still get in during the rolling phase -- and since it doesn't look like anyone has been admitted in less than a month post-interview (based on what I've seen here), it's my guess that final pool might not be released for at least another week -- an inference going only off of what our group was told (unless there are still rolling acceptances after the final pool is notified.)

Edit: For what it's worth, in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014, final pool was notified the latter half of the 4th week of Jan (Weds 23rd, Fri 24th respectively). Again, this is just going off of old threads.

Had my interview this week and was told that they are no longer doing rolling admissions. Everyone who hasn't heard back is going into final pool.

Ah that's a bummer. Are you sure that's the case for everyone, and not just your interview group? In previous years there were still acceptances/rejections on the day final pool was announced.

Is it safe to assume that if we haven't heard anything after submitting our secondary application that we will be receiving a rejection? From what I understand, the last interview day is next week!

Good catch, I only looked at last year.

Hi Kylie! You are definitely right that leases go very quickly, but the good part is those that go quickly are usually on the "wrong" side of the river for med students. Aspire apartments are very clean and they have a nice gym and community center. I don't live there, but a lot of my fellow M1s live there for the first year. We had a grill out there during the summer for the IMEI program and it was pretty nice. I would warn you that the private corp that bought Aspire from the university of Iowa has been repeatedly upping the rent year to year so I would keep that in mind if you plan to live there for 4 years. Otherwise there is a bus that goes straight from Aspire to the doorstep of the med school. It is not walking distance in winter but during the better weather you could easily bike or take a run to get to school.

If you have any questions feel free to ask away! I did my undergrad at Iowa and a masters so I've had a lot of experience going from living on campus, to renting, to subletting, to storing stuff while traveling abroad, to owning. Be happy to help!

Thank you so much for the info! I'm super eager to get to Iowa City and get settled 🙂

When does Iowa give out merit scholarships? If we didn't get one with acceptance, can we assume we're not getting one? Do they give merit money to out-of-state applicants?

You can get merit aid after the acceptance.

Anyone know if there's going to be another round of acceptances? Or are we all headed to the final pool..

Starting to think the rest of us have been final pooled

It looks like the last few years they had one or two accepted on the final pool day, but who knows when that will be.
