2015-2016 University of Kentucky Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys interviewing on 9/1, you guys wanna chill the day before? I arrive at 5pm.

Also, anyone have recommendations for lodging?

is anyone thinking of sitting on a weekday first year class prior to interview ?
I definitely think this is a worthwhile thing to do if you're in town long enough. I did it during my application cycle two years ago and the quality of instruction was one of the reasons I chose to go here. I sat in on a second-year Renal lecture though because the first years were taking an exam, so it was probably more interesting than it might have been. The first years are in Anatomy right now, then it's Biochem until the winter holidays.

How long did it take you all to move from File Complete to Sent for Screening?

I'm not sure exactly how long since I wasn't checking the actual status. But I sent in my secondary July 23rd and got an interview offer 2 days ago. so at least 2-3 weeks I would say.

I am finally getting to this secondary. I know...I'm a little late on this one. I am trying to figure out what to write for the OOS Student Essay. I feel like most of the questions are already addressed in my primary and other parts of my app.

How much did you guys write for it? Did you guys focus more on why Kentucky and personal ties to the state?

I wrote 900 words but some people stated they've written over 1000. I'm sure they don't care about the length of the essay as long as the content is good. I spent about half the essay talking about why I want to go into medicine (hard to do without repeating what I said in my AMCAS personal statement) and then the other half talking about why Kentucky in particular. I don't have any personal ties to the state.

I'm interviewing the same day! I'll be driving down with my parents though since they wanna check out the state so I won't be able to hang out. PM me though if you find a good place to stay nearby? I'll do the same for you.

Interviewing 10/27.

Lemme know if any of you early interviewees find somewhere good to stay. I'll buy you drink if we both end up getting in

Are there any current UK meds who would be willing to answer a couple questions for me over PM?

Anyone else interviewing 10/3? Also just a friendly heads up - that's parents weekend for the undergrad students (and there's a football game that weekend) so all the hotels that weekend are already pretty much booked so I'd suggest looking up alternate options!

I'm always happy to answer questions on here or by PM 🙂 (M2)

@sustinamith knows I hang out on this site way more than I should, right? Glad to see you on here passing along the UK enthusiasm!

I get in around 8 PM on the 31st, but I'll be there all day on the first. Flight leaves the 2nd in the AM.

I am an undergrad at UK, and I also interview on the 1st.

The closest hotel to the medical side of campus is the Holiday Inn on Export Street. I have recommendations for pretty much anywhere in Lexington (close to the airport, interstate, downtown, shopping, etc.). Just let me know what it is you're looking for.

Thanks a lot! See you on the 1st 🙂

I'm guessing this is the closest one to the medical school? Thanks for the recommendation!

Not to stir the pot tooooooooo much up in here, but for any of y'all with later September/October interview dates, there seems to be one spot left next Tuesday (09/o1) and one spot the week after that (09/08)! I got on the site after getting my reminder email today and happened to see those so 👍

You're killin' me. I could totally move my interview up but it would mean buying a suit and driving over the mountains way sooner than I thought

Super confused by the interview schedule now. There's 19/17 for some of the September dates. Are the max amount just guidelines? lol

No, anyone over the limit is essentially on the wait list for that interview day. They won't get it unless people drop that day.

First II at Kentucky (to be scheduled)!
Canadian, completed 08/09/2015

How long from being verified did it take for you to receive your secondary? What correspondence did you receive in the meantime?

Thanks!

Verified 7/28, received secondary within a couple days and submitted it on Aug 10. Didn't really receive anything after. Hope that helps.

hmm, I was verified almost 2 weeks ago, I received an acknowledgement email that indicated my application was undergoing screening, still haven't heard back though

I've been in "sent to screening" for over two days now - take anyone else this long for them to review your app? It seems like everyone else got their hold or II within a day.

I just looked and it says my app is "sent for screening"
Not sure when my status changed. I was submitted my secondary 8/20.

I just received an email saying they have put me on "screening hold". Do I have a chance ? Canadian, LizzyM 73

Just got the same - was in the screening process for 3 days. They are probably just pooling us up and waiting to see if more IS people apply/better OOS people apply

I read last year's forum. Apparently, the people who go on hold will be re-reviewed in January. By that time, the class is full and the people who get interviews off the hold list are only considered for the wait list. Basically, we are semi-rejected lol

Mine took almost a week to change from "Sent to Screening" to "Interview(s) to be scheduled". Here's how my timeline looked if you think it'll help

Submitted Application 8/17
File Complete 8/18
Sent for Screening 8/24
Interview (s) to be Scheduled 8/29

Tanks man! Congrats for receiving the II 🙂 I got the hold so I think I'll be trotting onwards

Once you got "Interview (s) to be Scheduled", how long did it take to actually receive an email or opportunity to schedule an interview?

Still waiting for mine but it seems like it took several days for most...

I have yet to receive the secondary and the only correspondence I received was shortly after verification (10 days ago) : "Applicants given further consideration will receive e-mail instructions regarding completion of a secondary application. Thank you for your interest in the University ofKentucky College of Medicine", and the email ended with that. Is this considered a rejection?

Not at all! i submitted my secondary July 23rd and they gave me an II offer around August 20th. So they can take a while.

EDIT: sorry I misread your email! I'm not sure how long the secondary would take to arrive. I got mine mid July after being verified June 20th but I think that's just cause they weren't even looking at apps until later in July so it's hard to say. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken?

hey any canadians get an interview? if you dont mind me asking, what were your stats? i'm deciding if i should complete the secondary for this school! does anyone think its too late to submit a secondary?

Yup. Have my interview tomorrow. Secondary completed July 23rd. 3.8 U.S GPA 34 mcat. I recommend doing it. It's long but the questions are well thought out and if you spend time on them it's a great way to show who you are beyond your marks. PM me if you have questions 🙂

okay thanks, it seemed kind of open ended at the time

Just got done with the interview. I can't imagine a more laid-back experience. Two one-on-one interviews that were more like conversations. The only preparation necessary was to know why I wanted to come to UK and knowing a little about the school so I could ask questions about programs that interested me. And not being awkward, and knowing that having an interview is a pretty good indicator that they want you at their school (see thread "Goro's interview tips" or something like that).

For those of you who also interviewed today and are looking for something to do, I just changed and I'm gonna go explore campus and downtown. I'd love a companion! PM me with your phone and I'll call you

I'd like to reiterate what MDWannabe said. I also interviewed today, and it was an awesome interview experience. So incredibly laid back. I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has!

+1 to both of these. Great school, faculty, and students.

Received my secondary on 8/27. I've heard people say you should try to submit your SECs within 2 weeks of receiving them. Is that a hard and fast rule ? Asking because, there was no such guidance in the email. I couldn't pre-work on my SECs - stretched quite thin b/w full time work and school. Thoughts please...

It's not a hard and fast rule, but timing is a major part of this entire process. At this point, you're pretty late in the game to be submitting a secondary for this cycle. Last I looked, they were scheduling interviews in November, and they're likely in December now. At that point, they typically have the class filled.

If you submitted your secondary ASAP, it would still likely be a couple weeks before any prospective interview invite. By then, you'd more likely than not be interviewing for a spot on the waist list.

Sorry it isn't better news.

Hey guys,
Do you know if they have student hosts for people who are interviewing?
Thanks!

I submitted my secondary a month after I got it and I still got an interview 1 week after I submitted. It's all a myth
