2016-2017 Case Western Reserve University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You applied to 45 schools??! What the ****? I respect you but I do not understand you. Congrats on the interview though.

I have very discordant stats (low GPA high MCAT) and I have been working full time a while so I could afford it. Seems to have worked out honestly, the schools I've been getting interviews at are not schools I would have expected.

Same. I also applied to a lot and the schools that are interviewing me are the higher tier/low yield schools rather than the schools I thought I matched better with. This process is weird.

Randomly checked portal and apparently I'm invited for an interview. I didn't get an email yet. Maybe it recently changed and will come tomorrow.

But just FYI make sure you're checking!
What they said on your portal when you get II?

M1 here lurking. Good luck to all - perhaps meet some of you in the coming months. Our first exam is on Thursday!
How have you been liking it? If you have time, can you name some pros and cons you've experienced at Case so far? Cleveland in general?

Are you comfortable if I PM you any questions regarding Case (in the near future)?
This is my top choice school and I'd love to get the chance to talk about the school with a current student! Appreciate any and all insight!

Sure thing. I may not get to it until after exams (on Thursday and Friday).

Submitted app for both university and CC tracks a few days ago, OOS hopeful. It seems like the turnaround time for CWRU is pretty quick!

Not if you also applied to CC. CWRU waits until CC makes a decision to update you on their decision. You are in for a wait!
Oh dang lol I thought the CC track questions were more interesting overall and since app fee was the same to apply for both, why not (even though it's a super reach) 😀

A little late to the game, put this app off for a while...any who received a II not complete the "optional" research question? I have no publications or soon-to-be publications so I'm curious about how negative it would be if I left this blank...

I don't have any publications but still wrote a full essay on my undergrad research experiences. I did have a fellowship and poster to talk about, but I feel like I spent more time summarizing my research and talking about the skills it afforded me. I don't think you need a publication to write an effective essay here.

Agh, I just realized I ****ed up and didn't write the research question. I thought it was only for college track and completely misread. I do have research on my primary so this is probably a loss....Damn.

just checked portal and I also have an II from Case but never got the email, been checking inbox and spam every day so everybody should go check!!

Technically the research essay was "optional" so I don't think it would break your app. Maybe contact the admissions office to see if you could send in a little blurb by email.

I'm pretty sure there is no email.

Check your portals often!

Has anyone with research experience not write the optional research essay? I am rereading the prompt and I'm starting to wonder if they put "optional" to allow people without research experience to skip the essay but it's not actually optional for people with research experience??

I'm inclined to think that "optional" is directed toward the applicants who do not have research experience. The wording of the prompt makes it seems like it's strongly recommended for those who do.

"if you have participated in research or in another scholarly project please tell us about it"

I can't imagine why you wouldn't write about your research a little bit if you have some. This is a very research driven institution.

I wrote almost the full characters about my research and I got a II from Case. Worked for me.

For those who got IIs, have you been able to select your host yet? I tried doing that today but I didn't see a list or anything like that in the portal.

It only shows up under the Cleveland Clinic tab for me, but also appears to be the list from the previous cycle. I think that by the end of this month (hopefully soon-ish) there should be updated lists

So I can probably list a bunch of things, but I'll try to keep it short and rather answer specific questions.

I think we have a great class, I really think the faculty care about teaching and your learning, and I think the school is very open to feedback. They keep us quite busy (but I'm sure this is true at most places), and most exams or evaluations are short answer/essay style. PBL is a huge part of the curriculum and you will spend ~6hrs per week in PBL with probably ~6hrs of research for that outside of class. This is in addition to lectures and anatomy. Anatomy spans the entire 2 years, rather than a block on its own at many other institutes (I personally like this better). PBL is a very individual learning preference, but fear not, you will make it through even if it's not your favourite thing (my personal style is more lecture/textbook).

Our first block is Social Determinants of Health and Population Health. Many people in our class do not love this part of medicine, so I guess it's good Case deals with it first and gets it out of the way in 5 weeks.

Cleveland is not the most exciting place, but there are some cool events every so often. It has some of the worst poverty and health disparities in the nation, and that is likely part of the reason why it has a bad reputation. That said, I think you'll have enough to do, the school has a lot to offer people, and your class mates will be friendly, and fun to spend time with. Case very much discourages competitive behaviours.

If you have anything else specifically, post and I'll get back to you.

Anyone know what interview days are like here?

No promises about what it will be like this year, but when I interviewed I had a faculty and a student interviewer. They were both relatively relaxed, and they just really want to get to know you. Case will also want you to sit in on lecture or IQ, preferably IQ (which is our PBL). They want to be fairly certain people realize it is a big part of our curriculum and that potential new students are willing to play nice with others and commit to it.

IQ?

IQ: Nine students join with one faculty facilitator three times a week to approach paper cases that naturally evoke inquiry and motivation for learning. Students develop their own learning objectives for each of two cases on Mondays and then return on Wednesdays and Fridays to discuss the reading, research and learning that they have accomplished relating to their objectives for each case. https://casemed.case.edu/curriculum/education/iq-program.cfm

That's it. I'll just add that the official learning objectives (LOs) are released on the Friday after the IQ group meets. It's the individual student's responsibility to then see whether the group's learning objectives covered all of the official LOs, and if not, to look up what is missing. The role of the facilitator is to generally ensure the group gets most of it and to guide the group if need be.

Has anyone else's application yet to be marked complete? Submitted mine on July 8th and still not complete. I'm about to call the office.

That's unusual - are all of your LORs in? I submitted early August and was marked complete only 2 days later.

Sorry to hear that 🙁
When were you complete?
I was complete 7/20
Stats: UG GPA: 3.3, SMP: 4.0 MCAT: 516 & 11 publications Traditional over represented Majority

uh whhhhhat? why would you be rejected from case?! you're perfect for them. 11 publications is amazing either way. I'm sure you'll be fine elsewhere
