2016-2017 Case Western Reserve University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
MEEEE!!
P.S. How many more interviews do you want?!? STAHP already 😀
Hahah it's not about the interview, but rather about knowing. I'm gearing up to withdraw from a bunch of my interviews and only go to the ones that I care most about (Case is there).

Has anybody called to see where their application is in the cycle? I've seen on a few other forums people have called to check to at least see if they've been reviewed and put on hold or not (e.g. UCSD) and the assistants they talked to told them.

Interviewed here this week. Spectacular experience and I was thoroughly impressed. URMs should make sure to stay for the urm check-out as it is very insightful.

How relaxed or stressful was the interview?

Does anyone know when we hear back? I know some schools said the 15th and some said the 17th

My portal has said "marked complete" since 8/17...haven't received any updates since. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Been marked complete since 8/2. I think there are quite a few people who haven't heard anything since their July-August completion dates.

Hm, it's interesting. Cause looking through the thread there have been people who got put on hold/rejected that were complete late august. Guess we just have to be patient!

I didn't hear anything since being complete in early July, and got put on hold a few days ago. This isn't exactly the best case (hehe) scenario, but I'm taking this as an invitation to update them with my SMP performance.

I like what you did there, lol!

Does anyone know what the post-interview acceptance rate is? I know this type of info can be found on US World News if you pay for expanded access.

I would have thought the acceptance rate is closer to 35-40% post-interview. Case interviews ~950 candidates each year. The final class size is ~175. According to the U.S. News stat, Case accepts nearly 3X the desired class size (~450).

450 / 950 = 47%

Just got an email from Case... about applying to their masters programs. The sadness.

I wonder if September 28th interviewees will get decisions next week... starting to doubt it.

I didn't see anything in the interview information about where to park, does anyone know?

I believe the information is on one of the links (I think visitor's guide) on their portal.

Yes they can.

However, I looked back though on the last year that the 15th fell on a weekend. They waited.
How did you get this info? Curious about some other schools as well. Thanks in advance!

How is it a gimmick? I've known a decent amount of people who got better results from med schools after applying with a masters
There are better opportunities in "the real world" to distinguish yourself as a unique candidate. I opted to work as a research assistant for several years before beginning my PhD and garnered several first authored publications and research awards. A Masters would have never granted me the breath of opportunities I found in the real world. Masters programs are also unjustly expensive and are largely in place to boost revenue.

Dude...you can finish a special master's in 1 year (the point is to help you get into med school). How are you even comparing that to PhD with multiple pubs?!?

I went on the portal to upload application updates only I am not sure if they uploaded? Does anyone have experience with this? Is there any sort of confirmation that your updates successfully uploaded? Thanks in advance.

You can't compare this to the people who are seniors in college or recent college grads who know they want to go to med school but may need a bit more help (who these master program ads are geared to). Some people know they want to go to med school now so you can't expect them to spend so much time or consider getting a PhD instead of a masters before medical school. Masters and post-bacc/masters programs have helped many people get into medical school. Just because it wasn't the route you took doesn't mean it's any worse or better than what you chose.

So there was another thread where an applicant received an update saying that the AAMC is recommending decisions be held until the 17th.

Traffic rules however list the 15th so technically a school can release earlier but likely won't due to the recommendation to wait. The picture I attached shows that recommendation and there was an asterisk by the 15th further up on the page.

Edit: If you're really curious just look at the 2011-2012 thread for whatever schools you want to know about. That cycle, it was the exact same situation.

Anyone interview on 9/21? If so, do we hear back on Monday as well?

I hope so! even though their fb admission page didnt mention they had a committee meeting for our interview date :/

So based on last year, they should've definitely had another meeting since the first one. Maybe they decided not to make a post. I sure hope so.

That's exactly what I thought too. Hopefully we hear soon!

Anyone attend the first MD/PhD interview session this week at Case? How'd it go?

Why wouldn't they? I interviewed that day and I thought he said we would hear back by then... Or maybe it's wishful thinking??!

Oh during the intro session? The only reason I'm asking is because their twitter usually announces committee meetings and never did.

I think you're right.

for those who check the fb admission page... you should check the twitter one lol. This was posted on october 14th: Monday's Admissions Committee Meeting will be reviewing interviewees from September 30, October 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12. So I guess those who interviewed on sept 21st will hear back tomorrow?
