2016-2017 New York Medical College Application Thread

Same here. Took the CASPer a few weeks ago and nothing has updated in my portal, except now my secondary application says it is complete. Does that mean that they have my CASPer score?
I haven't take the CASPer yet and mine says complete as well.
I took CASPer yesterday and this is my status:

  • 07/20/2016 - Your secondary application was completed by the Office of Admissions and is currently under review by the Committee on Admissions.

Just called admissions because mine did not say complete yet as I took the CASPer test yesterday, too. And she said it could take 6-8 weeks for my application to be processed 🙁🙁

Oh gosh. I knew I should have taken CASPer before I got secondaries.

Oh okay. I never got a completion email but the portal says that my app is under review. I could be mistaken though.

Just to clarify, being complete implies that they received your secondary application and your recommendation letters. The Casper score is separate from being complete. Your application goes into review and then NYMC will post on the status portal when they received your score. There is a possibility that you will get an interview invite even before they get your score from Casper.

Submitted my secondary and letters two weeks ago and I'm still stuck on "Your application fee payment or AMCAS fee waiver approval was received and your secondary application has been successfully submitted". Letters are still blank. For those that have had their letters processed and been deemed complete, how long did it take between submission and notification?

I would call them. It took 5 days from the time I talked to them on the phone about my letters to the time it showed complete.

yea same!

Serious question:

How many of you sent in optional additional evaluation letters?

In NYMCs secondary app guideline pdf,
They "strongly recommend additional LOEs"

It's a little late now for me to find people to write me LOEs, plus all of the people I would want to write for me (research supervisor, premed advisor) wrote on my behalf for my committee LOR.

Has anyone had experience with this? Did you just use people who contributed to your committee LOR or omit the additional letters altogether?

I submitted 3 additional letters for a total of 6. (My school doesn't have a committee).

I sent in 5 total letters. No premed committee for me either.

I'm almost 100% sure that a committee satisfies all letter requirements and precludes sending in additional optional letters. I think that is more for those that initially send only faculty letters and choose to send a PI letter and/or work supervisor letter.

I'm aware my requirements have been met with my committee LOR. The pdf made no mention of such a preclusion which was the cause of my concern. I think you are right however. Has any other committee LOR user submitted the optional loe's?

I have not

I just registered for CASPer and my account is pending a manual verification - is it okay to go ahead and submit my secondary application now?

I say you're fine. I submitted my secondary before even looking at the Casper site and have yet to receive any sort of angry email or phone call.

When did you submit your secondary? I submitted 7/11 but they still haven't received it?

I have not
So I'm about to submit mine and it feels like i'm leaving the entire thing blank. All I wrote in was my committee LOR. It freaks me out considering how intensive my other secondaries were...

Umm...I do not have an LOR that's from my undergraduate department. Is this requirement strictly executed?

You'll have to call them to go over your letters and confirm that you want your application to be processed as is. I substituted one of my other letters for a non-science letter.

Hi everyone, so when doing the secondary for this school, one section asks this:

OPTIONAL LETTERS OF EVALUATION

Please review the NYMC Secondary Application Instructions for requirements regarding optional letters of evaluation before completing this section. If you are submitting an optional letter of evaluation from an employer or volunteer clinical or community services activity, please enter N/A in the course and college name fields; and 0 in the course number and credit hours earned fields. You may also use this optional section to submit additional academic letters. If submitting additional academic letters, please complete the fields in this section as listed below." [theres 2 fields below to put letter info]

I'm confused as to what this means. I submitted 4 letters to primary application (1 being committee). I listed the committee letter info on page 3 of primary, but this page 5 on the secondary asks for 2 more letters. Do I just pick 2 of the 3 remaining letters to list? What will happen to the remaining letter that I can't list cuz I have no more space?

I apologize if this sounds confusing! Please, any help will be appreciated, thank you!

This seems to be a source of confusion for a lot of us. As far as i know, you can submit up either a committee LOR or 3 individual letters at the "required letters" screen. (page 3) Your Committee LOR will fulfill this requirement.

THEN there is space for two "optional letters." If you wish, you can list your additional two letters in the optional section, as your requirement is already met by the Committee LOR. As far as anyone on this thread can tell, the optional letters are geared more for students whom did NOT have a premedical committee letter. This would bring their total letter count to 5. (3 required + 2 optional) Most Committee LORs contain 5 individual letters, and the general consensus on this thread seems to be that you can leave the optional letters blank if you have a committee LOR. Most people whom submitted individual letters and NOT committee letters used the optional space to boost up their letter count and give NYMC a more accurate depiction of them.

Hey guys just a quick question. Does anyone know if NYMC pre-screens for MCAT or GPA?

Hi,
I was just curious, how many people didn't have enough LOE for the undergraduate section? I'm debating on if I want to submit.. I already took CASPer and I'm only holding off because it is $120..
Thanks everyone!

Just submitted my secondary! Good luck everyone! Let's see if cycle #2 will go better for me at NYMC!

Hey, so I'm a graduate/post-bacc student and I called NYMC asking about the UG non-science requirement. While I had UG science letters from my major, they said I could not use a graduate non-science letter to fulfill the UG non-science requirement (which I think is silly). I've tried contacting a Spanish professor I knew well, and I'm waiting a few days to hear back from the professor of course. But do you think I should submit without it if I don't hear back? I called NYMC and was told not having a UG non-science may or may not hurt my application. That ambiguity wasn't very encouraging. I feel sort of ostracized as a graduate applicant now. Has anyone gotten accepted without this UG non-science requirement?

I also applied without a non-science letter. We'll see

I initially applied without a non-science letter and received an email stating to call them. After I called them I was notified that they needed the letter, so I had one of my undergraduate professors submit one today. I'm under the impression that it's mandatory? But, don't take my word for it. I would call them to be absolutely sure.

They gave an impression that it my application would be considerably less competitive without it, but hopefully everything works out.

Anyone know If I can take the CASPER exam Aug 11th, without submitting my AMCAS application or sending my primary to NYMC?? Just took the MCAT and a little late in the cycle but wanted to take this exam now so I can get it out of the way. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am sure you can take it now and then indicate on your secondary that you have taken it. Also have the result sent to NYMC. It is valid for a year I think.

Yes, you can take CASPer before you even apply. It takes them a few weeks to grade the CASPer so best to do it early on than later, although NYMC does say that it will review apps prior to receiving the CASPer score on their website. You can add other schools to your score recipient list even after the test, you just have to pay the regular fee per school.

@ishiningstar is right that scores are good for a year. For example, Rutgers RWJMS accepts CASPer scores from 2016 for this cycle.

Just checked my online portal, it says my CASPer scores were received. Anyone know when II's started going out last year?

From last year's thread, looks like they started going out around 8/19
