2016-2017 University of Texas HSC at Houston (McGovern) Application Thread

The current M1s are the first class taking the new curriculum
 
Yes, we are the first class completing the new curriculum. I can't speak to all of the differences between our curriculum and the second years (because I didn't take their classes), but I do enjoy our curriculum. The new curriculum is meant to be more integrated. So, each week we have a theme to the week and then our lectures mostly follow with this theme. It's been interesting because we are introduced to a clinical topic (like a certain disease), and then throughout the week we have basic science lectures that address that specific disease in some way, then anatomy lab dissections focus on that system,and we complete a skills session with standardized patients for that system, etc. That way, by the end of the week, we have addressed a lot about that specific disease and we wrap up with a discussion and problem solving session encompassing the week's material.

As with any new curriculum, there were some hiccups at first, but I feel that the faculty have done a great job addressing those and have implemented changes as we've gone. I think next year the curriculum will be even better (since we are kinda the guinea pigs for you guys)!

Is there any group/ independent learning or mostly all traditional lecture ?

It changes constantly! We do lecture, large group, and small group every week.

Also the grades may change to pass fail for the next class from what I've heard (or maybe the following year)
 
During my interview yesterday at another school I had several students and other interviewees mention that McGovern was a good school if you are a competitive learner instead of collaborative. Others also said the medical students were very rude to them and the students said they were unhappy with their school. Granted, their (current Ms1s) experiences occurred during last year's application cycle.

During my interview at McGovern, everyone was very nice and friendly and mentioned the environment was collaborative. Needless to say, it was very different from the aforementioned statements. I mostly talked to MS1s who were experiencing the new curriculum and they were very happy.

Are there MS1s, MS2s, or other interviewees who know what I am talking about? I apologize for the scatter-brained post, it was just a bunch of "he said, she said". Thank you!

I went to dinner with 6 or 7 ms1's when I was there for my interview, and we ran into a few ms3's at dinner. There were only positives about the school and the students. Not sure what everyone's problems were...
 
Not uncommon for NYC schools to subtly trash each other in recruitment efforts as well. Wouldn't look into it too much. Truth is that there are prob a few gunners everywhere you go...

That's strange, I've never heard of other students trashing other schools on my interview trail. Aside from that, though, I thoroughly enjoyed my interview day at McGovern and the MS1s I met were so friendly and welcoming. They emphasized that their was an environment of collaboration. I wouldn't take what the students from the other school said to heart; obviously, they may very well have been speaking the truth of their experiences and chose another school over UTH, but people's experiences vary. I'd say to pay attention to why each student chose their school, and then make that decision yourself based on how you feel and your own impression.
 
Do you guys know how long it takes for McGovern to be added to our TMDSAS rank list? I interviewed on 11/4 and am hoping they will consider me for the pre-match :shy:

I don't think the rank list has anything to do with prematch, only match I believe.
 
II just now for 11/18. Suggestions on best hotels/pricing in the area? They offered too many to look through, and some personal experience would really help!

To be honest, I had a bad experience with a student host and am reluctant to go through that again. I was asked to pack my things as I was leaving for the interview, as it would have been troublesome for the host if I returned afterwards. Doing this made me run 15 minutes late. I suppose we should have communicated more, but it still left me feeling awkward.
I've had good experiences too, and student hosts are generally very nice but I'd rather guarantee the freedom of my own time as a precaution in this case. McGovern is relatively high on my list so I need it to go smoothly.

To everyone else, don't let this discourage you from staying with students. They were great experiences (and they're usually free) and I learned a lot, but I don't think they're right for me. I generally prefer silence and mute contemplation prior to my interviews.
 
I interviewed here in mid-October. The school still hasn't come out on my TMDSAS rank list...do they usually take long?
 
Are interview invitations sent in big batches or few at a time here?

Same. San antonio also hasn't populated for me too and interviewed October. kind of looking bleak for prematch offer if rank hasn't populated even.

they are on my rank list now. Still don't know how that bodes regarding prematches, but so far the thread is quiet on acceptances so fingers still crossed.
 
During my interview, they said McGovern does not send out many pre-match offers, so they told me not to expect one. Hope this helps!
