2017-2018 Duke University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any one who has recently scheduled an interview: what dates are they scheduling for at this point?

Why doesn't Duke promise that their post-interview survey is anonymized? this is unnerving

Are they actively rejecting people? it hurts every time I check the portal...

No, they silently reject. If you don’t get an II, they won’t contact you again.

They change the portal status I think. I'm just wondering if they started doing that or are waiting to change people's status.

Someone said their portal changed to a rejection. I can not verify and it’s weird that only one person had mentioned it so far. But I still check periodically out of paranoia.

If you aren't selected for an interview, they will update your portal around February when interview season ends.

I think they tell everyone (accept, reject, WL) at around the same time in March.

For everyone who interviews, acceptance/waitlist/rejections are sent out in early March. Acceptances are by phone and email, rejections and waitlists by email.

Who heads the admissions committee at Duke? Andrea Perfetto Liu?

Andrea is the director, but she is not the Dean of admissions. That is Dr. Lee and Dr. Crawford at the moment I believe.

I recommend requesting a student host! My host's insight was invaluable and gave me great perspective on life at duke!

I will second this; my host was amazing, and really made me want to come to Duke!

How long did they take to e-mail you back about info for a student host? I submitted that google doc form, but still did not hear anything back. It has been about two weeks ago, and my interview is about a month from now.

Looks like it was about 1.5 wks for me. I'd say if they do not get back to you in two more weeks, call/email.

For those of you who interviewed already, what part of your application stood out to the admissions committee? Did they mention your service, research, leadership...?

Can you stop asking this question on every thread? go look at the school's mission and it'll tell you what they want. Aside from that any one of those things can get someone the potential interview.

I would rather know someone's personal perspective on the strengths of their application rather than general statements on their website.

Top 10 schools generally all look for the same thing. Strong research, strong leadership, strong service, strong something, and high stats. Some focus more on one versus the other, some schools like people with a wide array of these, some schools are okay with having a little less stats. There isn't a checkbox that guarantees you an interview. And most people don't know what gets them the interview at a top 10 anyway.

You can make a thread asking people who have gotten interviews/acceptances at top 10's what they have. But to comment on literally every schools thread with "if you got an interview, what makes you stand out" is spam.

Not sure why you're ticked off for asking on 2 threads of top 10 schools lol

I get what you're saying though, I'll probably make another thread to post it.

Sorry if I came off ticked off, didn't mean to. It's early in the AM here and I'm not a morning person ahaha.

No worries! I'm just trying to gather more information on the interview process that's more detailed than their admissions websites. The best of luck to you during the interview season.

same to you! and yeah, I completely understand. The process isn't a comforting one haha.

Just don't feel it's efficient to post on threads. Rather making a thread would probably help answer your questions much better.

What is Duke's regular turnaround time from file submission to interview invitation?

There's really no "regular" turnaround time for an II. This is true for any school.

Anyone mind sharing what interview day was like and/or the MMIs? (Are the MMIs bear the beginning?)

Also, when does Interview day end? Can’t find any times listed online.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for information on interview timing (beginning/end etc..)? All I see is that I'm MD Session #2 in my portal and I can't find any info beyond that

The MMIs were good! The people all respond if you're unsure and you're never acting, it's all discussion based. There's a variety of group activities, more traditional stuff, ethical things, and even a writing component. There were about 10 stations.

Thank you! When you say group activities, do you mean with other interviewees? The only MMI’s I’ve experienced have been entering private rooms to discuss a single scenario with one interviewer. Is duke’s more involved?

Yes, there are stations where you will be asked to work together with another interviewee to complete a task.
