2017-2018 Duke University

What time does the interview typically end? I can't find any info to coordinate flights.
I believe 3:30 PM, I was able to get to the airport and through security by 4:30 PM. I think a 5:30 PM flight is the earliest I'd advise getting, just in case.

Does anyone have an idea of where Duke is in their cycle? I only ask because a previous II tracker claimed they have an early II season

They will interview through mid-end of February.

As I understand it, when you interview really has no bearing on your chances. We have kids in our class who interviewed anywhere from the first week till the last. You get an overall composite score after your interview on a list and at the end of the cycle a certain cutoff is taken from the list which determines acceptances. As hard as it might seem, try not to read into it too much - I remember being in your shoes not too long ago and I can empathize with your sentiments - hang in there!

Yes, they do.
Do you know how long before interview day we should hear from them normally? I filled out the survey to be paired with a host but haven't heard from anyone yet. Interview is in about a week and a half. I am beginning to think I should reach out to someone

It's run by first year student volunteers. When I stayed with a host, I didn't hear until a couple of days before my interview. So, don't worry, you'll hear something shortly.

Perfect! Thank you so much for the timely and reassuring response! I am giddy to check Durham out; I've never even been to a Carolina.

Is it worth submitting the secondary this late if I have a LizzyM of 71?

Hey guys! So I'm thinking about sending an update to schools with my recent activities etc, but I was wondering what is usually sent in updates? like what sort of information do you guys include?

Only update if it's substantial. ie publication, new relevant job, etc

So I've been wanting to ask this for some time, but I wasn't sure if it was a dumb question. For the advocacy essay on the secondary, would it have been bad to mention If someone housed/assisted an undocumented immigrant whose family kicked them out of their home for changing faith? Do you think adcoms would take issue because doing so is technically "not gucci"? Thanks guys!

I think it’s fine - I had a somewhat similar situation in mine (but I haven’t gotten an interview, yet, so maybe take my advice lightly).

I'm driving through GA and NC for an interview (and to see family in the area). Does anyone know if Duke is receptive to in-the-area emails? I already have to miss quite a bit of school, so it would be nice to only make the drive once (fat chance...)

I'm also curious about this... as well as if Wake is receptive too. I go down to Raleigh/Durham quite often.

I called Duke and the lady who picked up was the sweetest person on the planet, but informed me that I needed to email as all the people who could answer were facilitating interviews today. I will email, so I'll keep you posted! Not sure about wake, but let me know if you (a) hear back and (b) interview!

The woman who works in the office and answers phones is so sweet, she alone made me want to come to the school lol

Let us know! I'm curious as well. And goog luck with your interviews!

Too late to submit a secondary here?

No, deadline hasn't past yet! They aren't rolling admissions, so it's not too late! They also seem to really care about their applicants, given how many essays they make us write. I think they will look at you thoroughly regardless of when you submit (before the deadline, of course).

Thanks! I've just been dragging my feet with this secondary since its soooo long. Would be THRILLED if I got in here of course, so I'll take your encouragement. 🙂

Of course, earlier is better simply because there are more interview slots earlier in the season, but Duke's system is much less of a rolling admissions process than other schools, so def send your app in if you can write compelling essays. Case in point, I procrastinated with my secondary until November 13 of last year, but still got in. I did put a lot of
Time into my essays though.

Thanks for the encouraging words! I will definitely work more on those essays and send them in. 🙂

Just as an FYI - I filled out the student request form and they were unable to find me a host, as I believe that they were getting slammed with work at that point. So, just as a safety, I would recommend getting an AirBnb or something just in case! I was able to stay with a delightful couple who lent me a bike to get around Durham (and I think it was about 40$ a night, so much better than most hotels). Uber was also great in Durham.

I'd be happy to connect anyone with them if someone is interested!

When did you interview?

When do we hear about the time/place for the pre-interview social? Mine's about a week away so just curious how far in advance we'll be hearing!

7-9p the night before. Location depends upon the day you're interviewing (Sundays at Cocoa Cinnamon, Wednesdays at The Parlour). You'll get an email ahead of time, promise.

Would you consider it too late to submit secondary this week?

What exactly is an "in-the-area" email? I'm interviewing at UNC next week so I'll only be 20 min or so away from Duke.

I have two interviews this year that are pretty far from where I live, but closer to other schools - so I've been updating other schools to let them know I'll be in that area. UNC is definitely close enough for an "in the area" email to Duke, but you have the same problem I have - it seems to be short notice.

Ahh that would've been good to know sooner haha. I'm leaving the country mid-November until mid-January so if by some small chance I'm lucky enough to get an interview invite here, it's going to cost a lot of money to make it back. Anyway, thanks for the response and best of luck at your interviews! 🙂

No problem! You might want to email them (just the admissions office) to let them know - in case they have you on the docket and haven't sent an invite, yet. I think you have a legitimate reason.

Complete late August. Does anyone else still have a status that says you are being reviewed by initial screeners on our admissions committee?
Oh yeah - but I wasn't complete until 9/20. Good to know the silence doesn't mean anything yet...

So when they say to bring comfortable shoes for the tour.... do they mean I can wear sneakers or do they mean I just shouldn't wear heels

I would bring flats. You get a tour of the undergrad campus as well which is pretty big.

Yeah they said the tour is gonna last like two hrs. I might need to see if I can buy a cheap pair of comfier flats

Wear whatever you want. Sneakers are totally fine. You'll be doing a fair amount of walking.

You can change into sneakers for the tour - on my day they made it very clear that you were not being evaluated on the tour and whatnot, so they strongly encouraged people to wear/change into comfortable footwear!

-Edit to say that I see MC_Infarction already answered the question. Sorry to repeat!

@ current duke students,

is duke responsive to letters of interest pre-interview?
