2017-2018 The Commonwealth Medical College (Geisinger)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone, congratulations to those who have been accepted! I am applying to Geisel next cycle, and had a question: how seriously do you think this program would take an applicant from the west coast with solid stats? I've been doing a lot of research on medical schools, and I'm really drawn to Geisel, and some of their community-based initiatives. There seems to be a range of different clinical experiences for students (ex FCE & the longitudinal integrated clerkship) that are pretty unique. I'm going to apply, but I'm not sure if I should get my hopes up. I am going to communicate my specific interest in Geisel in my secondary, but I have no ties to the state of PA. I'm hoping some current students on this thread could provide some info regarding classmates who are OOS (did they have family in PA? approx how many people are from the west coast per class?). Thank you in advance!!
This is Geisinger, Geisel is a different school. I had no ties to PA but I was given an acceptance. It is possible.

Oh my gosh, I didn't mean Geisel. I've been doing research on Geisenger not Geisel. I don't even want to to to Geisel!

I got waitlisted but on my interview day there were a lot of out of state people with no ties (including myself) mixed in with in-staters.

My student interviewer was from California and one of the students I talked with at the interview lunch was from Utah. I think you have a decent shot here if you show strong interest in your secondary application. Good luck!

Nope.. dead silence.. other schools.. same story...
I know temple has had movement, and Geisinger had movement at this time last year according to last year's forum. But I'm not sure if they have had movement yet this cycle. I think they may have taken a more structured approach this year, since last year's students were waitlisted throughout the cycle, but this year the waitlist wasn't made until late March. I guess time will tell... getting antsy studying for the MCAT again :bookworm:

I was accepted OOS (New York) with no ties to PA! I had a lot of community service/non-profit work in my background, so they definitely care about that.

Has anyone heard anything regarding waitlist movement here? Seems like things are moving slower than previous years.

Hey everyone, incoming M1 here. Does anyone have information regarding when the criminal background and drug test are due? Thanks!

They said they want everything before July 1! You'll get an email for the drug test, and you have to send your results in within 30 days.

Just withdrew my acceptance -- hope there is some movement on the WL soon. Good luck everyone!

How did you just withdraw it? I thought decisions had to be made in early May?

I received another acceptance, so I withdrew in the portal. I think you can withdraw at any time though.

For anyone who's been accepted, in the prematriculation requirements it lists CBC Clearance and it says it should be completed through AAMC but provides no instructions like it does for the PA criminal background check or the child abuse clearance. Does anyone know how to complete this clearance?

You should receive an email for it. Were you recently accepted? If so, that's maybe why you haven't gotten it yet

Any other accepted students confused by the instructions for FBI fingerprinting for non pennsylvania residents?

Yes, it's very confusing but I was able to eventually figure it out. Which part do you need help with?

Just getting started honestly, the instructions seem to be for michigan residents, and it isn’t clear if we have to use the alternate method described versus a livescan machine.

Yeah, they've changed the pdf instructions a few times but the process is the same. Since we're OOS, we have to mail in a set of fingerprint cards.

1. Get fingerprints taken on a fingerprint card.
2. Follow the instructions to pre-enroll for cardscan submission at uenroll.identogo. Use the service code that's in the portal. You pay a fee and print out the confirmation paper with the barcode on it.
3. Mail in the fingerprint card and confirmation paper to the address listed on the confirmation paper.
4. When the fingerprint check is complete, identigo will mail you the results.
5. Make a copy of the results and mail the original to geisinger.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have questions.

Alternatively, if you live near PA, you can go get them done via livescan and it would probably be easier.

Thank you so much, unfortunately PA is too far from me. So for the fingerprint card we have to get that done at a local law enforcement agency?
