2018-2019 Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUCOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good luck!
Mind sharing stats? Instate-Out of state/GPA/sci GPA/MCAT/DO rec vs MD/any other pertinent information.

Campbell is by far my favorite school and have strictly applied here for hopes of early decision. I ask as I submitted on 7/24 and received the email a few days later. No invite, no update since 7/26. It has not been 3-4 weeks, but I am concerned as I received secondary invite in 1 day.

Me:OOS/3.83/3.79/(506:125/127/125/129)/rec from a younger MD whom I feel embodies many DO ideals/I am almost 10 years out of undergrad.

Campbell is my favorite institution and my fingers remain crossed.

You seem pretty passionate about CUSOM. Would you mind elaborating on what you like so much about it and why it’s your top choice?

Rejected today. OOS 3.6+/512/ DO rec. Good luck everybody!
If you got rejected post-interview, you should probably work on your interview skills. If it's pre-interview, then you'll be fine with plenty of other MD/DO schools. Good luck.

It was pre-interview, but thanks!

I'm assuming when you say you submitted on 7/24 you meant your secondary? When I spoke with admissions they said 2-4 weeks after submitting your secondary is when you should expect to receive an update on an interview invitation. I submitted my secondary around the same time as you and haven't heard anything either. I wouldn't worry too much because you haven't even hit the 2 week mark yet.

Sorry to hear that! Congrats on your MCAT though! If you don't mind me asking, did you receive a secondary from Campbell or were you rejected pre-secondary?

Well, you have already interviewed, so perhaps you were less impressed than I was. I knew entering the application path that DO was the path I would take. Before I decided this, I had been preparing to retake the MCAT and to improve my biology content and get a higher overall score. However, the more DO's I interact with, the more certain I became.

I visited one of the AACOMAS recruitment events and the representatives from Campbell left an amazing impression. I visited campus a week later. I perceive a warm, caring faculty and staff. My undergrad professor advised when looking at DO side, watch attrition rate and class size. Campbell seems to retain their class and have smaller classes than the majority of D.O. schools.

I additionally have a passion for underserved peoples--they have a few overseas rotation options that resonate with my heart. I, myself, am from a rural region and relish the opportunity to study in such a location. Additionally, my partner is about to start his postdoc and there are many options for him within driving distance. A last factor I appreciate is as far as medical colleges go, Campbell's student body seems a positive group. I do not thrive in highly competitive atmospheres

Advice on best or most convenient hotels to stay at for interview day?

It was post-secondary. After reading some of my essays, they could have been stronger, but they weren't bad. Maybe I just wasn't what they were looking for, and that's okay.

There's a Microtel Inn in Lillington.

Has anyone gotten a wait list to interview?
I received a "there may be a delay in this step of the process" email today.

I had hoped to apply early decision...hence my nerves so early in the cycle but I suppose I did not meet the standard.

This is the hotel I reserved. They have fairly poor reviews, but it's so close to the campus.

Did they give a reason for the delay?

100% Match Rates. Our grads match well, and score well on the USMLE's (COMLEX is yesterdays news, sorry :/). They will show you the USMLE stats at the interview.

This isn't true. We have a 100% placement rate, as in all of our grads find a position eventually. However, several of last year's graduating class did not match initially and had to eventual SOAP or scramble into a position. Some of them did not get a position for some time, and at least one anecdotally went to do a research year after not matching. Also, several people only matched into a prelim/transition program, which counts as a match, but it's not exactly anyone's goal. Just wanted to clarify this info to provide a clear picture.

For anyone else reading, I'm a current 4th yr, feel free to PM me with questions. Can't guarantee the fastest answers, but I'll do my best.

I stayed in the Microtel, its nothing fancy but good enough for a night for sure and you could probably walk to the campus from there which is the best part. Bring some type of breakfast with you though so you don't have to drive in the opposite direction of campus since the hotel breakfast is pretty skimpy.

Complete email this morning followed by II shortly after!

I received a phone call but unfortunately missed it because I was asleep (I work night shift and got off this morning at 9 am). I called back & sent an email and am waiting for a reply for a date!

Does the complete email from this program mean an interview invite is secure (and that it is only a matter of time until the admission extends an invitation)? Based on prior classes on the forum, this seems to be the case, though I didn’t know if anyone on here had a definitive answer. Cheers!

Anyone interviewing on September 10th? I would be willing to split the cost of a rental car and hotel! Thanks and good luck to everyone!

I don't think so. Just means they have everything necessary to make a decision in the coming weeks/months.

how long after submitting your secondary does it take to receive a complete email?

Does Campbell send their secondary to everyone? Do they have a stats screen or holistic screen?

No, they don't send to everyone. Minimum GPA is 3.2 (I think, someone please correct me if I'm wrong) and minimum MCAT is 497 with 40% or above in each section. They will screen out people who have below 40% in B/B or C/P. For CARS and P/S below 40% there is a "Prescreen Committee" that will review your application for an exception. I had below 40% in both CARS and P/S and received a secondary & interview invite, so I would guess they use both a holistic and stats screening method.

How much does CUSOM emphasize religion? I know it is in their mission statement, but I just wanted to know how much stock they put into it. Do students have to take religion classes? I'm not really a religious person (not trying to start any arguments), and was wondering if I left out the Christian part when filling out the secondary if that would be bad. Thanks, guys!

Hey all. I have heard some here and theres about the benefits of this school. I am curious to get some insight from students who are currently there, people who know students there, or applicants who know all about the school: why is this school your top choice, or on your top list? What specifics do you love about it?

Hey medstudent1215, I feel like we've crossed paths in every other DO thread this cycle haha.

Now CUSOM isn't my "top choice" and honestly I don't really have top choices when it comes to my school list. But the school definitely is a bit more appealing in certain aspects, compared to others. One, the rotations seem to be generally liked by current students, and I haven't really read into any students saying its a complete hit or miss. The location is affordable, but still close by a city and not as isolating as some schools. CUSOM is connected to an undergraduate university, with amenities that come with that. It's far cheaper tuition wise than many, and they are active in building a school that has at least some focus on research.

It is in no means the perfect school, but definitely has some pros that make it exciting.

Edit: anyone else with better insight than me, please correct me.

Anyone think I should bother submitting an app here? 3.87/3.82, 499 (127.120.126,126), race - azn

From their website "
  • A competitive MCAT score usually begins at 500 / 50th percentile of the particular test date."
so I would say probably not, try VCOM.

I would say that a 499 is fine to apply because you're 1 point below what they consider competetive. However, your CARS score is quite low, so they may reject you based on that. Ultimately I think its your call

Fuhhh, the struggle is real

If I were you I'd call them and brief them on your situation. Their adcom is super helpful and will probably give you some good feedback

I second this. I submitted with a 499 (126/123/126/124) and recently received an II. I spoke with admissions and they were very helpful.

Hey. Interviewing tomorrow. 8/14. I am in Lillington for the night and will be here all day and tomorrow night as well. If anyone wants to meet up and explore the town I have a vehicle. Personal message me! I’m bored here by myself

Rejected pre-secondary today. OOS s/cgpa < 3.1, 512 mcat. Knew I didn't meet the minimums but applied anyway. The school's website says they make exceptions to minimums on a case by case basis, has anyone had any luck with this?

How did your interview go? Was there anything you wished you would have brought that you didn't? I am questioning what is normal to bring to an interview! Thanks

I felt my interview went flawlessly. I’m not exaggerating when I saw that it was very relaxed and just conversational. There wasn’t anything I wish I had prepared before my interview. I just reviewed my application (grades, scores, experiences, personal statement, and secondary answers). I familiarized myself with ethical questions that they could potentially ask but nothing like that ever came up. It was exclusively just a discussion about myself. Where I came from, my goals as a physician, why I have these goals, why CUSOM can contribute to them, and what I can bring to the school. (All of which were touched on during my secondary answers). The three 30 min interviews blew by in what seemed like 10 min each. I wish I had more time with them. My advice: be yourself, and know yourself. That’s all they’re really trying to see on interview day. That being said, my advice is only valid if I’m offered an acceptance. But overall, my interviewers seemed very pleased during and after our discussions. Good luck to you all. PM me with any questions. I’m more than happy to give you my 2 cents.

Submitted Secondary 8/14 and received a complete email today (8/20). Do you guys know how long they take to send II/Rejections after receiving the complete email? And how do they inform you of II/Rejection?

Just received an II! Super excited to interview at this school. Does anyone know about the best way to fly there? Which airport is easiest and closest to fly into?
