OOS have silent since I submitted my primary last week. Should I be worried?
To a few replies,
My casper hasn't been transmitted yet, so I don't think it affected anything. I am not sure the percentage that gets accepted. IIRC they have a class size of around 10, so maybe half? He said they have interviewed as many as 75 in the past, but normally do 60. I think 60-100 is pretty standard for MSTP schools with a high number of spots, but I don't know what the actual average.
To those who mentioned not getting a pre-secondary, it was made available to all applicants on 7/13. I didn't get an email about it until about a week later when it was already submitted. Its a strange process, but I understand why they do it.
Not the poster you quoted, but I submitted my prelim app on 7/16 and received the secondary on 7/24.Do you remember how long it took to get the actual secondary after submitting the MSTP prelim app?

just found an answer to my question from UW website: "About 60% of the applicants who complete a secondary application are invited to interview"
For OOR applicants from last year, only 110 got invited to interview, which means roughly 184 students were invited to complete secondaries. I'm not sure about the stats for MSTP and how it reflects these numbers.
Just based on OOR stats for MD only and MD/PhD applicants from last year:
This means they do lots and lots of screening before sending out secondary invites to OOR students.
- 7251 applicants total
- 184/7251(2%) got secondaries
- 110/184 (60%) are invited to interview
- 44/110 (40%) are accepted

Need your guys' opinions on this...
My UW MSTP secondary was complete on 7/30 except that they asked me to send them a copy of my permanent resident card by mail. I did that on 8/1. When the portal still hadn't changed the status by 8/3 (last Friday), I emailed them to ask. I got a reply on Monday saying I can scan it so I did that and emailed it to them. No reply, portal status is still the same.
Do I call? Do I email again? I don't want to be annoying or seem overly impatient but, at the same time, there are only so many MSTP interviews and I do not want to be at a disadvantage because my application held back from review longer than necessary 🤔
This is one of my top choices so I am getting a bit antsy![]()

Thanks so much!"Hello UW MSTP,
I know you are super busy with all of the applications right now. I just want to make sure everything is complete on my end. Can you confirm that you received my document I sent on 8/X?
Thanks,
looptheloop "
I find it hard to believe that anyone would be annoyed at an email like that.
I read it as just a general challenge essay prompt and answered it that way, but I think it's up to you. I had already talked about some obstacles I faced growing up in a different question, so I used a specific situation. I could definitely see it going the other way though! For the question "What obstacles have you experienced and how have you overcome them? "
Are we supposed to talk about general obstacles we passed growing up? or specific obstacles with like organizations or something?
I think they’re trying to hype Spokane up because it’s a newer program. It was only implemented two years-ish ago I believe. Go with where you want to be. I did Seattle but not opposed to Spokane because I didn’t want to close myself off from a chance of going to UW because I picked Seattle onlyFor WA applicants, did you guys select the Seattle or the Spokane foundational year site? I feel like they seem to be saying that choosing the Spokane site gives you more advantage. Is this true or not?? What are your thoughts on this?
Can you tell us where you get the pre-secondary instructions? Does this mean we can just fill one out without hearing anything from UWSOM?To those who mentioned not getting a pre-secondary, it was made available to all applicants on 7/13.

I am sorry but do you mind sharing when did you send the pre-secondary essay?Just got my rejection email after submitting my presecondary 🙁 Good luck to you guys! I knew it was a long shot being OOR
For the MSTP supplemental app, did you guys put a true autobiography for the "Use this opportunity to provide any autobiographical information which you feel would be helpful for the MSTP office." question? like UCSD and Vanderbilt?

UW posts it on their website soooo it's easily availableDo we have the actual prompts for the secondary yet?
Fellow WWAMIer here! I am finishing up my secondary and will submit it this next week. Still waiting for the official word from my state certifying officer, but it said it would take up to 6 weeks and I'm about 4 weeks in so any day now I should be a verified WWAMI applicant. My app has just been complete this past week. I'm a WWAMI applicant. Anyone else applying to WWAMI received a secondary yet?

According to my quick email check it was 4 days after I was verified. Have you received the secondary yet or are you still waiting? If you get it in before Labor Day, you'll be fine. And I'm not sure how other WWAMI states do it, but mine moves a bit slower it looks like. If yours is like that then you don't have to worry at all about being late at this point. After you were verified by AMCAS and transmitted to UW, how long did it take to get a secondary? I submitted in the middle of July which I feel is super late so I'm worried that I'm already behind the 8 ball.

What date was your primary verified?I haven't received a secondary yet. I'm in Idaho so I'm not sure.

I would guess that you'll receive the secondary this week. And you're not late at all. My buddy is starting the Idaho WWAMI program this year and they didn't send an interview until well into the fall. You should be fine as long as the rest of your app is good!8/16.

They have no stated word limits tho, so trying to see if there was one.
They are all 250 words:
- An autobiographical statement which should include (250 word limit)
- the origin and development of your motivation to be a physician
- your prior experiences in health care
- steps taken to explore a career in medicine
- your eventual goals as a physician
- personal attributes that would make you a good physician
Please do not repeat what you wrote in your AMCAS Personal Comments (this will already be on file with our office). If you have already covered all of the above topics in your AMCAS application, use this space to let the Admissions Committee know who you are in addition to being someone who wants to be a physician.
- 4 additional short essays (250 word limit each)
- How have your experiences prepared you to be a physician?
- What perspectives or experiences do you bring that would enrich the class?
- What obstacles have you experienced and how have you overcome them?
- How have societal inequities in the U.S. affected you or patients you have worked with?
For re-applicants: From your most recent application until now, how have you strengthened your application?
If you applied and were not offered an interview.
Sorry, I thought you were talking about the MD secondary. There are seemingly no limits for the MSTP secondary. The MSTP secondary is also not on the website, from what I can glean.
Rejected presecondary today. Thought I had an alright chance as OOS, but I guess 18 years in Idaho wasn't a strong enough tie ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Good luck everyone!
Why didn’t you apply as an Idaho resident? I mean, if you aren’t a resident anymore, then nope, 18 years isn’t enough. They’re funny like that.
I did last year, but I think because I was still living OOS (I went to undergrad OOS and stayed after graduating while my SO finished her PhD program) I was also rejected. It bums me out this year because my SO will be finishing her program and we'd be able to move anywhere, and I'd really love to eventually practice medicine in Idaho.
I feel like I missed an opportunity as I wasn't able to tell them any of this because I wasn't even sent the pre-secondary question. But they sure are fickle about their WWAMI requirements haha
Sorry, but I’m feeling confused. So you applied last year as an Idaho resident, but are applying as a resident of another state this year?
If you legitimately applied as an Idaho resident last year, they do not care if you are currently living out of state. Plenty of students in their program were living out of state when they applied. If you can prove residency, I don’t think the Idaho admissions committee even looks at where your current address is. If you proved residency, but still weren’t offered an interview, I’d say there was something else about your application that they didn’t like.
I still think you should contact the admissions office and at least explain to them why you feel you fit their mission and should have at least gotten a pre secondary. This appears to have worked for many people in the past and I would say if you are from a WWAMI state and want to go back that it’s a decent argument. But it’s still an upward battle if you no longer claim Idaho or WWAMI residency.
Last year I was able to apply as an Idaho resident because I was still considered dependent on my parents. Since that time, I've been working full-time out of state and had to switch my residency, so I'm no longer an Idaho resident.
I think you're right though, I'll definitely send them an email. UW is my dream school, so I should fight a bit more for it. Thanks a bunch for reaching out!
