I agree!

Does anyone know how many people are usually accepted off of the alternate list for Spokane? I can find info for WA in general, but I can't seem to find much about Spokane specifically.

What did you find for WA in general, if you don't mind me asking? I applied to Seattle, interviewed, and am SUC. Just wondering what might happen if I end up waitlisted.

It says last year they got to #32 on the UW website. There is stats for several years on there. I am just not sure how to interpret that for Spokane.

From previous years, about 30 people were accepted off the waitlist for the Seattle campus

Oh I just found it too.

Its not strong, but if you think its maybe proportional to the # students in Seattle (100) v Spokane (60), then about 38% of the 32 would be Spokane, so 12? But like I said, not strong, no idea if proportionally more people decide to go elsewhere on one side the mountains or the other.

At the Monday 1/14 interviews they said they got to #3 last year, so they wanted about 6 for the waitlist this year so they had enough people to choose from.

Just got a rejection email, congratulations everyone who has been accepted!

Does anyone have any idea how many interview sessions Wyoming site does? I know they have 20 seats to fill but from what I can find is there is only 3 interview days with about 8 interviews a day. Just seems like there should be more interviews?

Not from Wyoming, but we have a similar schedule that confused me. I found out that there is 3 interview teams for each of the 8 slots per day. So for us there was 4 interview days x 24 people per day. So it is a little misleading.

EDIT: go to the bottom of Acceptance Statistics | UW Medicine
And you will see the acceptance rate for each WWAMI state. Wyoming is 37%.

Ah that makes more sense. Was also confused because they sent out an email today for interviewees to RSVP for eating with the students and they sent it to like 30 people

But statistically Wyoming has the highest percentage which is a good feeling

Had to look again to see that Washington's was so low, but after looking into it it just says applicant pool acceptance rate not necessarily Interviewed acceptance rate

Rejection email just now. Interviewed early October. Good luck everybody!

Is it just me, or was that SUC email a lot nicer than the previous one?

Just got my second SUC. Wording for this email was different from the first one (I interviewed midnovember and got 1st SUC in early January). First email said that reviewed my application and didn't make a decision ision, this one just says a final decision has not been made.

PSA to future WWAMI applicants:

You may be given conflicting information about when you will receive an acceptance call. Between your states website, the UWSOM website, and Student Doctor Network, I ended up anxiously waiting for an acceptance the weekend after my interview.

It may sound like the committee meets on Friday after the interview week, but you are not out of the game until the next week. I was accepted the next week AFTER I interviewed for WWAMI. I know that my excom accepted someone that Friday, and I figured I was done because of that. I ended up accepted by that excom the following week!

Do yourselves a favor future applicants and just don't expect a decision until THE WEEK AFTER your interview. You will save yourselves the headache that I experienced by convincincing myself that acceptances only come out Friday for WWAMI applicants.

Hopefully this relieves some future suffering 🙂

P.S. Congratulations to all the accepted folk, and I sincerely hope the best for everyone else. This process is rough, but it is NOT who you are as a person.

Those may have been the kindest words that anyone has said all cycle. Thanks for being such a wonderful person!

Does anyone know how often people who selected a preference for the Seattle site get sent to Spokane instead? I selected that I prefer Seattle, but would be willing to go to Spokane; however, after my Seattle interview, I really want to attend the Seattle site.

If what happened from last year holds true this year, then you'll almost certainly end up in Seattle. Spokane had their own waitlist, iirc but someone please correct if me I'm misremembering.

After you're accepted you get an opportunity to write a short essay about which site you prefer.

Last year Spokane was preferred. If you want Seattle, you'll get Seattle. If you want Spokane, you might get Spokane. Spokane is a smaller class, less rain, no traffic, better skiing, and rent is 1/2 as much. Seattle is bigger, has a more diverse makeup, better gym, liberal, LGBTQ community, and city culture (better bars, restaurants, live music, etc. imo). They also have more conferences and stuff which you likely won't have time to go to anyway. It doesn't really matter where you do the first 18 months if family, friends, housing, isn't a factor. Most people across all sites sit at home and watch the recorded Seattle lectures anyway. We all have the same lecture slides, course material, take the exams at the exact same times, perform equally well on boards and exams, etc. After Foundations (first 18 months), we are all the same and could be doing clerkships anywhere in the WWAMI region (or world for electives).
Source: In a first, Spokane was top choice for all incoming UW medical students in Spokane

As a side note for consideration: Over the Summer between 1st & 2nd year you will have to choose either to do a RUOP (month or so long rural clerkshipish type thing), Global Health thing (competitive to get overseas equivalant), a Literature Review (can be done anywhere on your own), or work on research. There's some research opportunities in Spokane but they are much more scarce than Seattle (also remember Spokane has WSU, so a lot of medical students for a smaller city). Some people are moving from the other sites to Seattle for the Summer to work on the research stuff they want. That could potentially mean double paying rent (if you have a lease), extra logistics, etc. So keep that in mind when choosing a site. Also, if you are interested in a highly competitive field you should do research or a lit review, but this can be done 3rd year after you have your Step 1 scores back, have done some rotations, and have a better idea of what you're shooting for. The school says you really don't need to do research or a lit review the 1st Summer unless you are aiming for Derm or Neurosurgery.

has anyone that has been accepted received an email regarding how to setup the UW student ID? I was accepted in November and they keep mentioning that I'll be receiving that email "soon" and I still haven't gotten it.

Hi all (although specifically all the ladies out there...)-- I am interviewing in Spokane next week and I am at a loss as to what to wear for shoes.I feel like my heels (professional 1 1/2 to 2 in) are going to less than advisable for the tour since it is projected to be 33F-- but would really really appreciate some advice. Do I change shoes post interview? If so, what is appropriate? Flats? Help!

Flats are fine. They are not judging you on your shoes outside of the interview. I wore flats for the morning portion and changed into my heels/wedges right before I went into my interview.

It depends on if you're comfortable walking quickly for 30 minutes in the low heels. I would also advise wearing pantyhose under your suit to keep your feet warmer. They also have ankle high and knee high if you don't want to wear the full length hose--though the full length hose will keep you warmer than the knee or ankle length ones in 33F.

I wore closed toed shoes that were about 1/2 inch heel for all my interviews with hose socks and it prevented blisters and kept me warm during the tours, which all happened during the cold winter months.
For one of my interviews I actually lost my fancy interview shoes and threw on some Forever21 closed toed pointy-ish flats and it worked the same (I was accepted to the school I interviewed with the lesser professional flats) so clearly it wasnt all that big a deal.

To end this long winded answer as long as your shoes are closed toed and you can walk quickly in them without tripping then you should be fine. The hose will keep your toes warmer and also is more professional in general. Hope this helped!

Thank you both! I think I will go the change into flats route. Just wasn't sure what to expect since I've grown up in Western WA and freezing temperatures are more of a rarity haha

Does anyone know if it's possible to request a different site after accepted to WWAMI? For example, if you're from Montana but would prefer to attend the Seattle campus

That’s not generally an option unless you’re a WA resident. In other words, ID residents go to Moscow, MT residents go to Bozeman, etc regardless of preference. This is per UW admissions as I had the same question.

If you’re looking to go to Seattle rather than your home site, you may be missing the point of the WWAMI system (and one reason why they’re ranked above places like UCLA and Baylor in primary care training), which is that UW has more hands-on preceptorships and other clinical experiences at its satellite sites (e.g. as an M1 you’re not standing behind an attending, a resident and a couple of M3’s). You may have to get creative or collaborate long-distance to do research in Seattle during the school year, but from what I’ve heard from current M2’s that’s not hard to do. Seattle lectures are also available for everyone to watch online, if that’s what you’re worried about.
