2019-2020 Colorado

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anybody know when second look day is? Couldn’t find 2020 information online.

Anyone know what it means to be waitlisted this early from the January 10th date? One of my best friends just got the alternate list email and we’re trying to figure out what her chances are.

Based on last year's thread (2018-2019), all waitlisted people will be ranked in 3 tiers (high chance, medium, low chance) sometime in April and notified of their rank by email. Around May 3rd, they will start pulling people from the waitlist. Last year, it seems only a good chunk of people from the top tier got in between May 3rd and July 26th (sheesh). The prior year (2017-2018), apparently someone from medium tier got in.

Wow, thank you so much! 🙂

Of course! That’s the 2018 schedule so I’d imagine it’d be similar but you might just email admissions to double check - they’ve been pretty quick to reply with any of my questions!

IS. complete in July. Haven’t heard anything. Should I just assume they forgot about me / I’m rejected?

During application process being an IS I thought this would be most likely place to get an interview. Unfortunately it has not happened that way. Got invited and accepted in many other schools .

Hi everyone, I am new to this thread but hoping to get some insight on CU. I just got offered an interview at CU SOM for February and trying to figure out if it is worth going or not. I have been accepted to other schools that are significantly cheaper than CU. But....CU is probably one of the more competitive schools I've been offered an interview at. I also think it'd be super cool to live in Denver during medical school.

I guess I'm just wondering if it's worth paying MORE THAN DOUBLE for tuition, and if I even having a chance getting in at this point. My MCAT is a 507 and I'm aware I'm on the lower end of their matriculates. I also know they have a heavy in state preference

They don't have a strong IS preference, it's about 50/50. In any event, you already overcame any in state preference they have by receiving an interview.

Whether or not it's worth it is up to you and your career goals, personal finances, and priorities.

Is there a way to submit an update on their portal? Or via email only?

Anyone seen a schedule for second look floating around? Even one from a previous year? I have another second look on April 4, so I'm trying to figure out whether I can just fly in the morning of April 5, or if I'll have to take a red eye the night before.

On interview day they mentioned that the website is wrong. Second look is actually Friday April 3rd, 2020. I hope no one bought plane tickets yet.

Thanks for the update! Thank goodness no plane ticket purchases yet... although it still looks like I'll be taking a late night/early morning flight. lol

EDIT: this is incorrect >> From my understanding you can apply for in-state tuition after you attain residency status (so you pay OOS for 1 year than IS for the rest).

I'm here right now and Colorado was up there in competition for me too, but you gotta shoot your shot if you can. Colorado is beautiful, and if anything treat the interview like a vacation 😉. They mentioned that the vetting process is extremely intense, and I'm not surprised - the interview is very relaxed though. You got through the hardest part, so I would say you should definitely try.

Sorry to burst your bubble here, but this isn't true. You can indeed change your residency to IS, but you do not get to switch to IS tuition. Colorado calls OOS students "accountable" students, and if you matriculate as an "accountable" student, you are on the hook for the full OOS tuition all four years.

Also after your first year, if you do switch residency you will become eligible for scholarships, grants, etc. that you can apply for, normally reserved for CO residents. Not sure how much it covers.. sounded like not much when they told us about it, but at least something.

Thanks for correcting this! I must have misinterpreted the scholarship eligibility discussion during the program overview presentation (thanks @PA-bound!). I'll update my original comment to avoid confusion.

CU finishes in February and generally only has a few big interview days a month, so its quite likely all of this school's invites have already gone out, barring last minute cancellations.

Ouch. I have to admit this hurts a lot. I wanted nothing more than a shot to stay in state, for both me and my spouse.

Sorry to hear, that must be frustrating. I don't know how effective this is with CU but considering you live in CO you could send their admissions office an "in the area" email stating that you would be happy to fill in any last minute cancellations for the upcoming interviews. You never know when someone else is going to get accepted to their top choice and cancel their interview at CU, or when a snowstorm hits somewhere in the US and flights are cancelled (heaven forbid). Hopefully you have luck with other med schools this cycle!

CU seems remarkably resistant to pre-interview correspondence, but I suppose I have nothing to lose at this point. I’ll think this over. Thank you for the thoughtful response!

FYI incoming class. Looks like they plan for half of the students to do get into LIC and the other half to do traditional clerkships. Guessing some might be asked to go up to ft collins as well

Any idea if they’ll increase the # of people who do the LIC at Denver Health? I think only 10 can now

Did people send one note to all interviewers or each a separate note? And how did you address them? Did you put them all in one email?

I would just do what you feel is most comfortable. I send individual notes to everyone.

To people who have interviewed, is the individual interview more conversational (about your app, etc.) or more traditional questions or even a mix of both

For the MSTP chalk talks at interview day are we allowed slides or does it literally have to be on a whiteboard? Can someone who has interviewed weigh in? Thanks!
