Im not really for this. :scared:

How do we feel about using the “tell us who you are” question as a standard diversity question?

I think diversity as it relates specifically to your background and/or upbringing is fine. With the addition of any identities you may have picked up along the way (ie. Most of my diversity essays have involved the identities of father and soldier)

Yes, the Duke secondary is a real trip. Very, very precious stuff. The stuff of a low yield school. They know they are going to lose their best applicants to top schools in more urban environments on both coasts. So they design this thing hoping to tease out the special few who are likely to go there if accepted.

The whole strategy has been pretty successful from what I have read. Unfortunately, the woman who designed and implemented it has passed away. What they are attempting to discern is a sensitivity to socio-economic diversity, "kindness" and the propensity to attend Duke.

Unfortunately, they bust your chops in the process.
I believe the data was from a couple years back, but duke published that only around half of applicants who receive a secondary actually submit it. After that, they actually have like a 7% acceptance rate of those who actually submit...not exactly low yield.

Am I the only one who prefers rural/semi-rural to urban...? I grew up in the largest city in eastern Washington...still only a metro area of 400.000 lol

Should I apply without having taken stats? Or is that a waste of money.

They say on their website that the courses are not required, but at the bottom of the page they say "the academic expectations as listed represent the absolute courses expected of matriculants to the School of Medicine "

I took a year of calculus but no dedicated stats course.

For the critical thinking one, can I talk about how I need to use critical thinking to determine how exactly to answer this question?? Its a good thing I love you, Duke.

Secondary received! Gearing up to answer these prompts with caffeine.

my body is ready to crank out these secondaries but my mind just isn't there

If you guys are sitting on other secondaries, I'd advise you to prioritize those over this one. Only because it's so time-consuming.

Nah, 24 hour turnaround time. If you ain’t first you’re last. GBGH.

But furreal on the true true, this one will take some time lol No one should submit an unfinished product

I "pre-wrote" a bunch, but I've been taking 3-7 days on a lot of these to get them to be the best they can. No idea if it'll pay off, but seeing that it's pretty early, it can't hurt.

If it means anything, I have already seen some success and I have had a turnaround time of like 3 or 4 hours on most of them. Granted, this is due to prewrites plus 3 sets of eyes on every essay...

I am getting alarmed and concerned, but I enjoyed this secondary. But pre-writing and late night work paid off, and I submitted!

Hey guys, for this prompt: "Success can arise from failure. What have you gained from your failed experiences and how does this translate in your current way of thinking?" Is it okay to describe an experience in which I failed and say what I gained from it? I prewrote this from last year's but it changed a bit this year and I'm not sure if i should just list a bunch of things I've learned from failed experiences

Can anyone explain this one. and also how it differs from prompt #1

Well that was a productive and taxing 3 hours of straight typing, but it is written! Would love to get a 3rd set of eyes on it (more than one review) as I did not pre-write and a lot of this is novel content (not copypasta) anyone else have a draft they are ready to exchange/willing to take a quick look at mine and I will do yours when it is done? TYIA

What's your take on the optional diversity prompt I posted above? What are they asking thats different than the main diversity prompt?

I think the main diversity prompt is about your self identities and how those tie in to you being a physicians. The optional shorter one is about how your identities and/or background may have affected your pathway to this point.

So basically:

Who are you vs. How has your background affected your pathway.

Example:

I use the diversity to talk about my identities as a soldier, student, and father

I use the optional to talk about how being a latch-key kid influenced me to join the military and delay my education.

One is my identity, one is my background.
