it includes waitlist->acceptance to my knowledge. My source is US NEWS. "in-state" acceptance rate is SIGNIFICANTLY higher

I think that typically they only want updates if its concerning new grades, new jobs, new publications, or awards.

I asked my advisor this same question, and her response would be that it’d be in my favor not to. She said that you run the risk of sounding like you aren’t confident that you conveyed your interest well enough in the interview. Also, if the case is that you get on the waitlist, it waters down a LOI sent after a post-interview decision. Definitely your call, but I’ve read similar pieces of advice from other pre-med forums.
