Working this weekend, looking to kill time between admissions – happy to answer any questions (that are not about LOIs*)! I know the interview day is fast and it may be kind of awkward to ask questions to students in-person, so happy to fill in any gaps.
*LOI skivvy (because I've gotten literally 11 of these messages in the past month. I know this is an anxious time, but I cannot provide clear-cut answers to many of these questions. Disclaimer that I am merely a student):
1. I don't know if they help (but they likely don't harm).
2. Letter of Interest = you're highly considering attending, Letter of Intent = you will attend if accepted. Your letter is technically not a legally binding document, but I think it's very poor form to say you intend to attend... and then you don't.
3. How far in advance should I send one? Again, I don't know.
4. Is it better to wait in case I'm waitlisted? Possibly. At least, in my experience, I didn't see a LOI bump anyone from WL->A or R->WL (at least at initial deliberations; they may play a role at higher levels or later on).
5. Do I have to send a LOI? Nope! I'd say the vast majority of folks – irrespective of decision status – don't.
