Yeah idk why people get so salty. Not every school will offer an interview, especially a t5 school with a 521 median mcat. This was a CLEAR reach for me and I just said **** it why not.
None of us would have forked over 100$ for the secondary if we didn't want to come to Baltimore. Unless you're a fan of just throwing away money.

Considering how they will probably send A's first and WL/R later, I'm probably gonna check out of sdn until I hear back. Good luck to everyone still waiting! I know we all won't hear good news but we all worked incredibly hard to get here today, and I'm proud of us no matter what the results are.

Dude, with 21 interviews and 4 acceptances already, I somehow seriously believe you will be OK. Some people here are waiting for 1! still wish you best of luck to get what you want!

Idk how saying "you're from nearby" refutes crime statistics xD. Do we have to visit everywhere to understand statistics? As for my comments, it's all in good nature/memes bud, not salty at all. Do you actually think I would use living near Raven's fans as a reason not to go to JHU? Don't take everything so seriously.

It's a really fine school, that's the thing! Just not in an ideal situation. But it's like that about most of the top schools..

I applied, because I would take the school over other lesser ones. You should chill out yourself.

You dissed St. Louis on the Wash U thread too. perhaps be more cognizant of the fact that there are people here who have grown up in these places and consider them home, and its hurtful, then to see someone fighting to get into the school that doesn't even want to live there is a bit insulting. Your comments aren't always kind.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back today! Regardless of the results, I hope you all end up somewhere where you're able to be happy.

Regarding these posts about crime in Baltimore, I hope all of us hoping to become physicians can actually think systemically about why crime might even occur. As someone who grew up in an area with high crime, there is no doubt in my mind that the reasons are primarily deep poverty and massive socioeconomic disenfranchisement due to historical and contemporary structural racism and economic deprivation. People are truly suffering across the country and these very communities are aching from devastating health consequences and shortened life expectancy as a result. With all of our science and math training we've received, I know all of us have been taught to think methodically about cause and effect etc. So, the same way, I hope we can continue to apply this type of scientific thinking to topics like history and sociology to understand the root causes of the many problems we have in our society.

As a reference point, here is an excellent book on this very topic as studied in Chicago: Community Health Equity

I don't want to be patronizing. St. Louis and Baltimore really need to be rescued from ruins. It's a cruel fact that comes with no judgment.
 
Hey! As a current student, I’d love to dispel some of the fears surrounding Baltimore.

First, ferrari1234 made a fantastic point that holds very true for Baltimore. Many of the areas of Baltimore that have higher crime rates are lower SES areas that have suffered from decades of governmental policies that have hurt them or well-intentioned policies that didn’t do enough. It also does not help that there is not a fantastic relationship between the police and some of these communities, due in part to the situation with Freddie Gray but also much more complicated than that. These areas also have the greatest challenges with health care disparities, and one of the things that I have found beneficial as a student here is a greater understanding of the complicated relationship between SES, health care, education, and local governmental policy.

Additionally, I think there is a lot of fear-mongering happening in this thread. I personally do not feel unsafe in Baltimore. I live in a neighborhood where I feel comfortable running errands or walking home from a friend’s place at night. The hospital campus itself has security available 24/7 and several resources for students to help us feel safer (security escorts, a free Lyft program in the evenings and early mornings, the JHMI shuttle that runs until midnight, etc.), and I do not feel unsafe on campus.

There are areas surrounding the campus that I would not visit by myself, but those are also areas that are easy to avoid, and this is not a problem unique to Baltimore. My impression has been that we face the same challenges that every other large city faces, and your risk is not greater here than it would be at many other medical schools. The crime statistics are based on the city as a whole, and they mask the fact that the areas that you will frequent as a student have a much lower crime rate than areas like West Baltimore (home of The Wire and an area very far removed from the medical school and residential neighborhoods).

Finally, I do feel that I came to Hopkins at least in part *because* of Baltimore. The cost of living here is much less than other large cities, which makes loan money go much further. Also, there are always events going on in the city, and there are tons of restaurants and different things to do. Plus, DC is a quick (and cheap!) train ride away, so it’s really convenient if you want to see concerts or shows or take your family down for a day trip when they visit.

I’ve been very happy with my experience at Hopkins, and I can help answer your questions if you have any!

in fairness, one could say that applicants with the luxury of choice in schools reading this thread would also benefit from reading others' opinions about baltimore, but i was entirely trying to make a joke haha
