2019-2020 Liberty University (LUCOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got a II but all the dates are for January. I went ahead and scheduled one, but should I keep checking back to see if there are earlier dates? Is interviewing in January for the waitlist at that point?

I would keep checking back bc when I scheduled, only October dates were available and people who got II after me were getting dates in September. Maybe email the office and ask them to keep you informed if another date comes available.

I interviewed in February last year and the class was half filled then. They evaluate each group, and interview into April usually.

II to LUCOM today. Portal seems broken - will post dates when I can see them.

EDIT: Scheduled for 09/09/2019. Will be driving - the rest of the dates were for January - I can only imagine that someone withdrew their II.

Wow I'm not the only one. I only saw January dates and them found that there was an earlier date. So happy.

Staying with a friend and his roommate who are OMS-I before my interview tomorrow here at LUCOM. Religion plays no part in classes and lecture unless they pray for you before hand. Essentially told me to ignore the BS on SDN. But hey, fewer applicants = greater chance of acceptance?

Thanks for this, I was just reading the horror stories here and I am also interviewing tomorrow lol

I’ve never read a horror story on here that came from an actual student.

Good luck you two that are interviewing today! If you have any lingering questions, stop one of us and ask!!

Update for everyone who is going to interview here, it is really really nice and laid back. Both the faculty and the students are really helpful and appreciative. And the religion aspect is not pushed on to you at all.

Does this school interview few students? What are the chances of acceptance after interview. My friend is debating on whether to go.

from what we heard, ~540 interviews for 300 acceptances. I guess that’s around 60% post II acceptance. I recommend your friend go to the interview - I felt at home and honestly the other COMs have their work cut out for them. I did have like one hard question on my interview. I felt like my interviewers were playing good cop/stress you out cop. Hopefully I did well enough to get the A lol.

162 spots total, about 300 acceptances around 500ish interviews so not too bad. Plus on the day of the actual interview there’s very few people, we had only 9. I’d recommend going.

Secondary received! Any current/past students want to talk about their overall experience? How are the academics and rotations here?

How's the student body and support?
I’m a first year here, about 8 weeks in to the curriculum and so far I can say I’ve been genuinely very impressed with how supportive the faculty are. I have never in my life had professors that genuinely cared about me and my success so much. The students have a really collaborative environment too, it’s been really helpful!

I’m a current student here and by no means a very religious person. LUCOM definitely respects that. The professors do pray for you on their own time, and before most lectures and labs... but otherwise you can chose whether or not you want to participate in the religious activities on campus or not

II Sept 19th, I'm guessing they had a couple of cancellations because I am interviewing Oct 10 and there was a date for the 14th as well.

Considering cancelling my interview here in Nov. because of all of the things in the news recently about their president and the way the school operates (borderline hypocritical). It's definitely not a good look overall.

It's funny that you say this. The more I learn about LUCOM, the more I like it. I will interview on Monday. Well, different views make the world better, right?

Could you link any articles about what's been going on? I tried to look online but couldn't find anything.

Here are just a few ...

Based on scores of new interviews and documents obtained for this article, concerns about Falwell’s behavior go well beyond that—and it’s causing longtime, loyal Liberty University officials to rapidly lose faith in him.

More than two dozen current and former high-ranking Liberty University officials and close associates of Falwell spoke to me or provided documents for this article, opening up—for the first time at an institution so intimately associated with the Falwell family—about what they’ve experienced and why they don’t think he’s the right man to lead Liberty University or serve as a figurehead in the Christian conservative movement.

In interviews over the past eight months, they depicted how Falwell and his wife, Becki, consolidated power at Liberty University and how Falwell presides over a culture of self-dealing, directing university resources into projects and real estate deals in which his friends and family have stood to make personal financial gains. Among the previously unreported revelations are Falwell’s decision to hire his son Trey’s company to manage a shopping center owned by the university, Falwell’s advocacy for loans given by the university to his friends, and Falwell’s awarding university contracts to businesses owned by his friends.

It's pretty incriminating stuff and really makes me think twice about interviewing here and being associated with this hypocrisy.

What about the recent news makes you like Liberty even more? Do you agree with Jerry Falwell Jr.'s views on how to treat students and faculty? I think it would be the best thing in the world for him to step down because he's really tarnishing the school's name.

I really try to rely more on action than words. I have seen many things on campuses around the nation, including for instance students not allowing a guest speaker to give a presentation on campus just because they don't agree with what he has to say. That type of thing certainly makes me rule out those schools. Regarding Lucom, I have spoken with students there, and when they describe their experiences, I both like the education they receive and the interaction they have with professors.

That's fair to say and I'm happy you have that viewpoint. On the other hand Jerry Falwell Jr. has committed many questionable actions along with many words so I guess it's also fair to judge those actions as well.

For the applicants who are hesitant to come to an interview at LUCOM based on the recent press regarding Liberty's president, I pose a question: Did you agree with everything your undergraduate president said or did? If there had been a huge scandal or controversy at your school while you were still enrolled, would you have withdrawn as a student and gone somewhere else?

I have no idea if any or all of the accusations against Jerry Falwell Jr. are true, because the medical school is so far removed from the dealings with the undergraduate university that we largely don't even know the main campus exists. I do know this: LUCOM's match rate last year was 98%, with some competitive specialties in the list. The school is committed to us having the most up to date training, they take our feedback and actually listen and change things when we ask, and they care about us as people, not just students. You'll be studying in a state of the art facility where the faculty and staff are 100% committed to helping you succeed, if you're willing to give LUCOM a try.

Anyone complete their secondary in July who hasn't heard back? They say their review process takes 30 days and it's been almost 60. Just wondering if I should still be on the lookout for an II

If we interviewed early September and haven't received an acceptance call or rejection email, should we be assuming a waitlist position or rejection? Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted!

I hadn't even heard of any accusations, but I would agree with everything you said regarding the school despite not knowing.

Current Students, Could one of you talk about what your schedule day to day looks like? What's a typical day look like? Also how often do you do service days?

Lectures M-F 8 or 9-12, OMM lab 1 day a week (2hrs) and PCM lab 1 day a week (2hrs) in the afternoons. There are also some at home reading assignments thrown in about once a week. I’m not sure what you mean by service days?

When anatomy lab is added, there are usually 2 labs a week of 2 hours each. We’re usually done by noon on Fridays, 5 on Wed/Thurs, and 3 on Mon/Tues.

Thankyou! On the interview day, Dr. Patton mentioned multiple "mandatory service days" (i.e community service) that we must attend. I was just wondering how often they were.

So far the only one has been during orientation. Our COMPASS groups do a service project every semester that’s required. There are also lots of volunteer service opportunities available through student organizations.

I submitted my secondary in early July and I still haven’t heard anything..

What are their political and religious (mostly asking about political) beliefs? I don't know much about this school and haven't been paying too much attention to what people say about it but now i'm curious.
It's an evangelical Christian school so the administration is such. i.e. republican. They have a shooting range on campus and I'm pretty sure some faculty might be packing heat. However, the student body is very diverse and they offer an immense amount of support (at least what I got from my interview day).

For those who have interviewed recently, what kind of questions did they ask you? Did they probe you on current/ethical issues within medicine, or was it more just "why DO"? Any tips for prepping for the interview would also be extremely helpful as well! Thanks in advance!

Just got the call 🙂🙂🙂. I didn’t think much about this school until I went there and interviewed, but it’s now on top of my list. They have a very strong curriculum and genuinely want to offer the best to their students. It definitely is a nurturing environment And I encourage anyone to strongly consider this school.
