2019-2020 NYU, Long Island

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You mean "secondary same day" or did you get an II the same day you were marked as complete? If so, congrats!
Ooof, goofed up the terms sorry.

So if you are accepted, then you may be selected for the guaranteed residency, which you can still decline. Right?

But it's still a mandatory question on the secondary. I'm unsure how to answer the question, and I wonder if a lack of certainty about this would indicate that this school is not a "fit" for me.

@vomitcom @EmbryonalCarcinoma

From the interview day, they made it quite clear that it is often difficult to go into the regular match from NYU-LI. They won't stop from trying, but it will likely be hard. The guaranteed residency should take the stress off you from having to go through a full match and the school's goal is to increase primary care in the long island area. If you do not plan on going into primary care, this school is likely not the best fit for you.

For the "(Optional) Please comment on any significant fluctuations in your academic record, or other application irregularities, not already addressed elsewhere" question, is it advisable to talk about a significant improvement in my MCAT score after a weak 1st attempt?

That's what I did!

anyone know how the interview process is here? I feel like I almost forgot I even applied here sometimes. Radio silence from their part so far
They interview hundreds of people for 24 spots, do not worry they will likely get your hopes up.

edit: on a more serious note, they hold interviews multiple days a week with large groups.

Not applying here this year, but occasionally looked at the last thread during the previous cycle. Seeing hundreds of applicants' hopes crushed so late into the cycle was hard to watch.

Yeah TBH I think maybe applying here wasn't as much of a great idea as most people thought. My main fear is, what if I change my mind about specialties? it's not like as a pre-med you get to do rotations to figure out what you like right? Right now I ofc have an idea of what I think want to do, but the fact that I am technically writing off my life to a specialty, no matter how sure I may be, seems like it is a bad decision wrapped up in a pretty box. At most, people who are typical pre-med maybe decided their specialty based on a select experiences, but we didn't have the comprehensive rotations that med students have. Getting cold feet now honestly.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to switch specialty choice if you are accepted here? For example, if you are accepted for IM then decide you wish to go Peds.

They just started their first batch a week ago. Anyone can tell you anything but does not mean a thing.

I actually am not too sure... I mean it wouldn't be much of a big deal as you are still doing one of the available specialties. I assume they would a bit more jilted if someone changed from OBGYN (which many are opting not to do nowadays, and there are sig. more empty seats left in residencies each year) and went into IM or Pets.

So no one really knows the accepted class’ stats, correct?

Also if you select general surgery, would a fellowship not be allowed afterwards? How does this whole thing even work lol.

They can't prevent you from pursuing a fellowship, but their intent is to train primary care physicians (including general surgeons).

Haven't received any emails/calls from them yet. Submitted secondary on 7/15. Does that mean I got rejected? or do they even bother sending secondary rejections??

Any word whether they still have a low post interview acceptance rate?

Does anyone know how many people they're aiming to interview for 30 spots?

Per MSAR, they interviewed 388 applicants last cycle

..
.

lmao
I see that. Part of me wishfully hopes that that's because it was the first cycle and they were desperate to get the right people in so they pulled as many fish out of the sea as possible and sampled which ones would make the best sashimi before buying them from the market to open a restaurant. #vividimagery

Congrats! Do you mind sharing what dates were available? Curious to see how far out they are.

The only date available for me was 9/17. I had a scheduling conflict though and they were very accommodating and offered a wide variety of alternatives.

Hello so I recieved an interview invite from this school and NYU LI. I am super excited since I think both schools are a great opportunity but I do not think I can afford to fly up there on two seperate occasions. The offered spots were in different months. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is ok/acceptable for me to call one school and ask to have my interview coincide closer to the other one? Would the schools frown upon this or would this make me look like less of a good candidate? If it is ok for me to ask such a question, how would I go about it? I am just hoping to save a little bit of money in this whole process because my account is already being stretched very thin.

Thanks in advance for the help everyone!

That seems fine to me. People send “in the area” letters begging schools that haven’t even offered interviews to give them one while they’re in town so just asking to move it around to save money seems reasonable

This might be a dumb question to ask, but do medical schools reject unqualified applicants during when the adcom invites the first batch of qualified applicants for interview??
