For anyone who's interviewed, how was the PBL thing? Was it like something you're evaluated on or is it just to get a feel for the learning style? I'm usually pretty good with group stuff but I recently interviewed at a school where a lot of the interview was large and small groups and I didn't love that part of my evaluation was based on the performance of a total stranger...

PS interviewing on Friday, I hope to see some of you there!

Completely to get a feel for the learning style. It's after the (incredibly long) presentations on the curriculum and such, and you stay where you are sitting and do the PBL with that group you're seated with. They go through step by step how it's done, and then you complete it with your group. Super low stress.

This school is only going to exponentially grow in appeal and notoriety. It’s already a very attractive school to residencies based on the patient experience that Beaumont Health provides students. I definitely agree— get excited!

Could you please elaborate more about the patient experience Beaumont Hospital provides, and why this is attractive to residencies? 🙂

Beaumont is a pretty large and respected hospital institution. It competes with U of M for top hospital in Michigan. Due to its size and reputation you get a very good amount of clinical exposure and possibly some very complex patients due to patients getting referred to Beaumont. Beaumont actually has the largest amount of surgery intakes/year in the entire United States! It should be self explanatory why that's attractive to residencies.

I see you mentioned the humidity. Lots of touring outside?

A good 30-45 minutes of touring the campus, about half of which is outside. Nothing to fret about, just hope weather is on your side!

Anyone staying at one of the hotels on Opdyke want to share an Uber tomorrow morning? I’ll pay for it. DM me.

When does this school start giving its students clinical exposure? First year?

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe its just standardized patients and sim lab the first year, as current students have mentioned most of your time is spent in the actual medical school building in years 1-2 as opposed to the hospital.

First two years is standardized patients you're correct! OUWB doesn't really use sim labs. We have one at Beaumont which is occasionally used for demonstrations but is not routinely used in our curriculum. About once a week though you go to the Clinical Skills Center at Troy, Beaumont to practice history taking and physical exams on the standardized patients. The Art and Practice of Medicine (APM) course works you up to the necessary skills you need before beginning in clinical settings with real patients. You will learn physical exams as you learn the organ systems, meaning when you are in your cardio unit you will learn the cardio exam, etc. so it all works together really nicely. You are not shown the Clinical Skills Center during your interview day but if you are accepted and come to our Second Look event you will get a chance to see the skills center at that time. Occasionally in second year you have sessions where you will go to Royal Oak, Beaumont to interview a real patient as part of the APM curriculum.

I keep thinking I got an II, only to be disappointed. I fell for it twice...

Not sure how prevalent it is, but I dont think those emails are entirely meaningless. Somehow, I feel like those emails hint at a potential II. A similar thing happened for me at a different school

Besides being exhausted from traveling, the interview yesterday was great. Royal Oak is INsane

What’s insane about royal oak??
The hospital is beautiful.

EDIT: and also ranked 2nd best hospital in MI and I think 11 top ranked specialties.
Yeah...it looks like a Ritz Carlton. And the fact that classes of 125 have sole access to a 1,200 bed hospital is sweet. The biggest hospital in my home city is ~600 and I thought that was big.

Anyone who interviewed on Friday, did they mention when we would be hearing from them?

Oct. 16th. I believe they also mentioned they meet on Wednesdays which is probably why Mr. Kallenberger said the 16th instead of the 15th.

Is this representative of earlier interview dates as well? Or only yours? I'm asking because I interviewed 9/13 and was wondering if we would all be grouped into the October 16th decision day, or if I could possibly hear back the 15th.

I'm not sure if they went over this on everyone's interview day but typically no news = good news. I think how it works is that when the committee meets they will accept some, reject some, and decide to come back to others. That means if you haven't heard back in awhile they are typically re-visiting your application at subsequent meetings to further deliberate. So typically not everyone who interviews on the same day will necessarily hear back in the same amount of time. Eventually they release a waitlist and will notify you of what tier on the waitlist you are on. 1st tier waitlist has very good chance of getting in, 2nd tier has a decent chance, 3 tier is essentially a rejection. Some people are accepted the same month they interview. Some people wait months before receiving an acceptance.

Easier said than done but try not to drive yourself crazy over when you'll hear back because if you expect to hear back on a certain date and don't then you'll be disappointed when in reality they may be revisiting your application again at another time! It's a long process but hang in there 🙂

I also interviewed on Friday here, I could not believe how much I liked this school. Best interview so far. Students and staff alike are happy and friendly, and Beaumont is amazing.

All aboard the OUWB hype train

Not @CaptainJackSparrow14 but a lot of students live in one of the apartment complexes close to campus. The major ones are probably 5 Points, Beacon, Boulevard, and Westbury. I think a lot of the M1s live in River Oak this year for some reason. There is housing on campus but it is SUPER pricey.

With regards to cars, I would say most of if not all of the M2 class have their own cars. Quite a few of the M1 class carpool to class everyday and I think I've heard that a few of them don't have cars but I'm not entirely too sure. When getting to Troy/Volunteer events people mostly carpool.

To build on that, during the preview day one M1 said that most students do have their own cars. One student didn't have a car and carpooled with other students for a few weeks, then got her own car shortly after. From what I understood, public transportation to grocery stores, the hospital, etc. is lacking. Unless you are able to carpool and/or use uber all the time, you'll probably need your own vehicle. The upside to it all is that parking on campus is free.

I was checking my portal, and I found it weird that OUWB received my LORs like 5-6 weeks after I turned in my secondary. Also, all of my LORs were sent to AMCAs around August. Am I the only one this happened to? The only concern is they require all documents, and that means I would probably be pushed back over a month because of some error.

Just checked mine...same thing happened. Not sure why this happened or if it delayed my application being reviewed

Just checked mine and this happened to me too! Weird because I got a complete email saying they had everything early July when I submitted my secondary so maybe this doesn't mean anything?

I don't want to blow up this thread, but do people stay anywhere other than Courtyard by Marriott Bloomfield Hills/Pontiac and Hawthorn Suites - Auburn Hills for their interviews?
there are very affordable air bnb places near the school- you should check them out!

Anyone flying into Detroit on Thursday night (between 6 and 8 PM maybe) want to share an Uber? Trying to save some money here lol

I second all of this. Lots of apartment complexes near campus. You need your own car.

I would also say some people have started just getting a place in Royal Oak for all four years as well. That way they don't have to move and the commute to OU's campus in the morning is generally not bad (20-25 min). There's a lot more to do in Royal Oak. People with families tend to get a place in the middle (Troy, MI) that way they are not relocating their family after the first two years.
