You think I could use "If you wish to update or expand upon your activities, you may provide additional information below. (500 words)" as an adversity essay? My dad has Parkinson's disease and I wanna talk about that.

I think if you want to frame your essay about how your father having parkinsons has affected your life going forward or changed your thinking about a medical career, then its okay to write about it. As long as its framed correctly I dont think it would hurt you.

For recent college grads, how are you using the "If you wish to update or expand upon your activities..." and "tell us what you have done since completing your undergraduate degree" prompts? Differentiating between the two is even more difficult if your major activity is research since graduating because of the "Please describe your most recent research project" prompt

Did any other 2019 grad MSTP applicants answer all 3? If so, how so? I'm considering just answering the 2nd and 3rd prompts, but this is a top choice for me and I feel iffy leaving a section blank...

Any PRIME applicants want to swap secondaries?
@Mr.Wick

Edit: Submitted already. Good luck to you all!

How many secondaries do they send out, approximately?

I’m not MSTP but I am a recent grad in a similar situation. I covered/updated all my activities in the gap year question so I didn’t feel the need to repeat myself in the “update or expand upon” activities prompt

Do they require LOR to be complete after submitting the secondary? It’s hard to tell because after I submitted, I never got any email indicating I wasn’t complete since they’re not in yet, just a blurb saying it would take some time to review my app to see whether I get an interview.

"Please briefly describe your reasons for applying to the UCSF MSTP"

Did y'all use this prompt as a "Why MD/PhD" essay in addition to "hy UCSF" ? Wondering if others interpreted this as more of a personal statement or something else. 250 words ain't much

I stuck to my reasons for applying to UCSF specifically, obviously with some of my interests intertwined but still in a pretty straightforward "Why this school" format. As you note, 250 words isn't a lot of space to write a mini personal statement and also explain Why UCSF.

+1

Did everyone use the expand on your activities essay as strictly ECs, or any additional information?

I'm MSTP and answered all of the questions mostly because I was heavily involved in an extracurricular club that I wanted to expand on some specific things that I did in that position. If I were only focusing on my research activities for all of the questions, the way I would approach it is to simply state what you have been doing in the "what have you done since graduating" prompt and maybe try to expand on an interesting aspect of your research that isn't described elsewhere for the "if you wish to expand on your activities" question. For example, I led our lab's outreach program in the local community and so maybe would have written about that. I could have also written about the course I taught that tied into my research with the lab or how I was engaged in the onboarding process for new members and that experience. There are a few angles you might be able to do to expand on "non-traditional" descriptions of your research.

For this I focused on "Why UCSF" since they will already get my Why MD/PhD in the primary. So focusing on infrastructural research opportunities, potential research mentors, things like that.

Is anyone still waiting for a secondary? Verified 7/15... it's the only secondary I haven't recieved
I'm still waiting for secondary. Verified 7/2 :nailbiting: Wondering if I should just give up hope..

Do they notify you if you are NOT getting a secondary? I think most of the schools that screen do this.
