2019-2020 UNC - Chapel Hill

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On the plus side, it’s a good time to make those resolutions if anyone does want to apply again! Stay positive my loves

nah man, communications between applicants and med schools should be holiday-free. And do you hear how messed up that sounds? Make a New Years resolution about improving your app....

I don’t want anyone to think I’m angry or anything. I’ve already been accepted to medical school and my top choice school interview is coming up which I’m stoked about. But UNC doing this really rubbed me the wrong way even though I didn’t care about this school. With that, I’m out. Good luck to everyone on the rest of their cycle!

Well obviously they don't care about you either...

UNC is still one of my top three choice (have my fingers crossed and waiting to hear), but I agree with you. I think that is just a poor decision to make to send out rejections like this on NYE. I'm almost annoyed that they said a lot of people would hear something in December, and it looks like they aren't keeping their word. Lastly, I had what I thought was a very unprofessional interviewing experience that made UNC look really bad. I still really would love going here because I have had a great experience with the community during undergrad, but they are really trying to change my mind lol.

I have to say- it is downright cruel that they chose NYE to send out rejections. I know for a fact these decisions were made prior- the office is closed until the 2. Why couldn’t they send them before the holidays? Or wait until next week? Starting out 2020 with a rejection from your top school sure is disheartening and a slap in the face. I have lost respect for the admissions office here. I understand they have a lot of applications- but every time I have called or reached out with questions they have been incredibly rude and short. Not sure I want to be a part of that anyway.

the rejection decisions were likely made by the committee on Monday or maybe last Friday or even before Christmas. The task of verifying the decisions and creating the listserv email was given to some admin person who was working from home over the break. Shutting down until Jan 2 just means the physical office is closed, not that the employees aren’t working. As someone with a job in education, I’m off 12/20-1/5 and the school is shut down but I have worked a bit nearly every day this break. I don’t necessarily have to answer emails though since we are “shut down” — hence why med schools say they are shut down, so they don’t have to reply to you

I don’t think rudeness is ever justified but please recognize the sheer volume of apps and the demands of a full time job that often requires hours even on your days “off” - that will be you some day, doing charts on New Years Eve from home just to get them completed before some arbitrary deadline

it’s certainly unfortunate to hear back on NYE (I was rejected today too) but they likely felt the sooner = the better or were trying to meet their Jan 1 deadline as stated in a previous post(“hear back in December”)

Just a clarification: I think all the NYE rejections were pre-II. This group was not given any "hear back in December" promise I don't think. They told people who have interviewed that they would hear back in December. So meeting a Jan 1 deadline doesn't help justify them sending the NYE rejections. Someone correct me if I am mistaken.

Ah I see, sorry I misunderstood that. I still think it was likely sent by someone who was working on NYE and didn’t put much thought into the fact that many people aren’t. Again, not justifying. Just explaining.

I don't want to rock the boat, and my intention is not to start conflict. I debated replying, but I do want to clarify what I said earlier about disappointment in how UNC treats applicants-my experience in particular.

This was pre-II, so there was no Jan 1 deadline. I find it unlikely the committee would meet the Friday or Monday after Christmas. If they did, I apologize and understand that sooner is better than later. They have the right to their decision.
But if my hunch is right, and this was a prepared e-mail to go out after the committee decided before Christmas, that's just wrong-regardless if they didn't take the time to see the date or intentionally chose it. It's wrong because of the message behind it-not the decision in itself.

I already emailed a withdrawal months ago since this school doesn’t wanna take FAP for secondaries since I’m not ‘poor enough’ yet I got rejected today??

You can’t break up with me if I broke up with you first!

I really feel like I’m stuck in an infinite limbo with this school y’all, really REALLY hope some decisions/more notifications are sent out next week. Anyone try to call the school or have any more info about future adcom meetings?

Anyone know if UNC is finished with II’s? I didn’t see any late one’s on last year’s thread.

You're not alone! I called and was told that not everyone was set to receive an update by the end of December. I know that's not super helpful info, but it confirmed we shouldn't be waiting on a December update that got pushed back.

I would be surprised if some post-II decisions (good or bad) aren't sent out in the next couple of weeks. I find it hard to believe they haven't made decisions for folks who interviewed early. Never know though :/

I actually called today to see when the committee might meet again because my husband’s job requires an intent to transfer by next week, if we are going to move. I was told “I cannot tell you that [when the committee meets again]. You have to let the process play itself out. There is no way of knowing.” To put it nicely, the lady I spoke with was not the most friendly or understanding, and some of the language she used was less than welcoming. My initial response was okay, this process seems very unorganized. In hindsight, I wouldn’t have called to ask, but maybe my encounter will save someone else from the embarrassment of calling.

Ahh sounds like they’re planning on staying tight lipped. Thank you guys for responding!

Honestly, I know they are stressed and probably getting a lot of calls, but they sound like terrible people lol

Same! I interviewed on 10/28 and have heard absolutely nothing. No decision, no hold just the same "awaiting decision."

I am not trying to complain about the school or adcom or anyone just sharing my experience

More people have likely received rejections, but they are either not on SDN or are not notifying the group. This is a personal decision; so, that makes sense.

Sent from my SM-G965U using SDN mobile

Yeah, what the other two said above me.

Went to UNC for undergrad. Happiest day of my life being accepted out of state.

I knew my OOS status would bite me in the butt eventually. No hard feelings though. Forever a Tar Heel

I'm so sorry 🙁 were you notified today or yesterday? Wondering if there was a wave yesterday or if Rs are slowly trickling...

Lots of love from this fellow Tar Heel and best of luck at one of the schools you were accepted to!!

Thank you!!

I received the email yesterday but it was also somehow sent to my @live.unc.edu email (which I no longer have direct access to since I graduated) but good thing I added a forward email and it showed up there.

Well I hate that you did not get into what I presume is your top choice, but you have 3 other acceptances so congratulations on that, my dude. UNC doesn't show a lot of love for their own students. My brother went there for undergrad, was denied for dental school, and was not offered an interview for their oral surgery program either. However, like you he is still a Tarheel through and through

Sometimes its the ones you love who hurt you the most

Nope sorry I don't know -- it was just an offhanded comment my advisor made. I don't think they'd be receptive to me asking for an update on the figures

edit: grammar

I assumed that was the case, thanks anyways!

With interviews wrapping up first of February I would assume that for those of us with early interviews we will be waitlisted if we don't receive any other decision in the next few weeks.

I wouldn't say that. I think it's important to remember that there's very little rhyme or reason in this process, and there's no point in thinking negatively when we really have no clue what the inner machinations of the adcom is. Stay positive! Or just don't think about it! That's what I'm trying to do.
