Just did my interview here (8/23) and had an amazing time. I highly recommend the night before social if you can make it. It seems all of the students are very happy and the school offers a lot of resources for the students to excel, everything from tracks, electives, research, etc. I would love to attend here!

For those of you who have already interviewed, what was the attire for the social the night before?

I'm an MS1 here if anyone has any questions, it's an awesome school and I interviewed at every Texas MD and put UTMB #1!

Hi! Does UTMB offer scholarship information if they send you a prematch?? I’m kind of confused on how this works for Texas bc of the match. From what I’ve heard, AMCAS schools will tell you if you’ve gotten aid and you can use that to leverage aid at another schools acceptance offer. I’m wondering if that’s the same case for UTMB or all of TMDSAS

To my knowledge you will find out about scholarships after acceptance. I don't think you can even apply for scholarships until you are accepted. And you don't find out results until right before school starts.

What made you pick UTMB over all other texas schools? (Just curious bc I've only done one interview so far and I'm still not sure what I should be looking for haha)

Oh ok so there’s really no way to know if you’ve been given a full ride at one school vs partial tuition covered at another before submitting your match then

It's different from college applications for sure! Financial aid offers are mostly made later on, after you know the results of most of your interviews. You will have time to compare then. Scholarships are much less common than for college. In case a school wants you to fill out a FAFSA to help determine their aid offer, the FAFSA application for next school year will open up on October 1.

Here is an excellent thread describing and explaining paying for medical school: HomeSkool's Guide to Financing Your Medical Education

Each school has a different personality suited for different people. For me it was the true P/F the first two years and the relaxed vibe w/ a lot of free time. We're in the heat of GAR and I still have a couple hours a day to chill. Most people here are laid back and we kick ass on STEP historically. Those were all big for me. And close to home.

I got the vibe at UTSW/Baylor/Dell that having a life wasn't high up on the students' lists.

sorry what is GAR? Galveston?

I’ve only interviewed at UTMB but I can echo these comments. Very relaxed vibe by everybody and students were surprised by how much free time they had

I'm going to copy a response I gave someone when asked about volunteer opportunities @ UTMB

The biggest is probably St. Vincent's clinic for the poor. You can act as a doctor and the more you learn/go the more responsibility you'll get. It gets to the point where you are giving injections, diagnosing, and the doctor is checking over your work and writing prescriptions. The cool thing is you can start day 1. My roommates have already done the training and been asked to give injections etc as an MS1. There are other sites for gynecology etc. but I'm an MS1 so haven't volunteered yet.

Just interviewed here yesterday! I was a great experience and literally all the medical students I met were super chill and friendly. I would definitely recommend going to the night before social if you can, but if you can't don't sweat it too much as you'll have plenty of opportunities to talk to current medical students during interview day on tours and during the lunch/student panels.

The Dean(?) of Admissions and Student Affairs said that interviewers don't have access to your MCAT or GPA stats but they do have the rest of your application.

You have two one on one interviews with either MDs or PhDs and many of the questions they were asking seemed be checking to see if you'd be a good fit for their school, like one interviewer literally said if you're an introvert you probably won't be a good fit for UTMB lol.
They seem to really want to cultivate a collaborative atmosphere and you can definitely tell they're succeeding based on interactions with students and faculty.

congrats on the interview, glad you enjoyed it!

For any current medical students. How is cost of living on the island? One of the biggest factors for me is relocating bc i help take care of my mom and uncle so when I stop working to attend medical school i have to be able to cover the cost of rent for us three. Compared to Houston, how is cost of living if you’re renting a multiple bedroom apartment/house.

Also, I’ve never had anything to my name. My credit score is not bad because of that but I also have no history of even having built credit. Since I will be the one paying rent now, how hard is it to be able to rent w no credit? Sorry all this is very new to me and I’m trying to be proactive about it.

It depends how nice of a place you want but prices are very similar if not cheaper than Houston. Look on rentals on zillow. for a 3 bedroom you may be paying 1500ish but your loans should cover you. As far as credit, depending on the place you should be good because you'll be a med student with guaranteed loans. You may want to look into getting a credit card, it'll build your credit.

Will certainly do! Thank you

I applaud you for what you are doing to support your loved ones while embarking on a path to become a doctor. It isnt easy for sure.

Dont know what specialty youre considering, but there are tons of scholarships for those wanting to pursue primary care. If that is a field you are interested in, I recommend you to look into those scholarships!

Thank you! I’ve heard about that and I’ve been seriously considering that. I think I posted on this forum about if schools will disclose scholarship or aid information in prematch offers bc rn that could also be a determining factor for me and my family since we are a low SES and that could lessen the financial burden big time. On interview day one of things that made me really like UTMB was how much scholarships they offer all students.

look into | NHSC (National Health Service Corps) if youre interested in pursuing primary care!
Best of luck!

Hi everyone! I received an email from UTMB 7/23 about a reminder to Take Casper even though i took it on 7/2. Just want to make sure this wouldn't be some discrepancy holding from getting an II. Also, do you know if UTMB sent an email after confirming yout app is complete with Casper?

They do not but I emailed them and they told me my app was complete.

They don't. They dont issue IIs without a score but they do give out IIs once they receive the scores once your app is complete.

That's just a generic email they send to all applicants. You don't have to worry about that. But they do wait for the score before they send out IIs. And no they don't tell you whether they've received your score. When I called them, they said to "check your CASPer account and if it says it was sent to us then we've received it."

The only email ive received from UTMB was "Thank you for applying to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. We have received your application and it is currently being reviewed by our Admissions Committee." Is this the complete email?

I think so. I never even received that, which is why I emailed them asking if they ever received my app.
