Curious to know how many students get accepted here on match day....

I didn't prematch here and starting to stress out because I know this school is prematch heavy, and I'm going to rank it #1. 🙁

When did you interview?

I really want an acceptance here, do you guys think a letter of intent would do any good?

A med student I’ve been talking to says they sent one. They said most of their class found out on match day and they also didn’t get a prematch but matched on match day.

Hi! Congrats to everyone who prematched (and good luck/keep hope alive if you did not!)
I know this has been asked before but I couldn’t find it so apologies in advance. Does accepting the offer mean you’re committing to go to the school?
Thanks!

you can accept any and all offers at this point. Are you an out of state applicant? If so, you have until April 30 to choose among your acceptances.
If you are a Texas applicant, you will rank your Texas interviewed schools and get a match on match day.

I prematched on 10/15 and received an email yesterday awarding me a full tuition merit scholarship! I didn’t know that was a thing here so I figured I’d post for people to know It’s possible! 🙂

Congratulations! What are your stats if you dont mind sharing. Are you URM?

Thank you! LizzyM around 75 and I am not URM. I interviewed in September. I am already quite set on another school, so I withdrew my app from UTMB and replied to the scholarship email thanking them and asking them to please give it to someone else. I truly hope it goes to one of you! Best of luck is everyone!

Do y’all think there’s going to be one more prematch wave before the match day? Were there any December interview people who got offered recently?

Anyway, congrats to you all

It’s hard to think there will be any in January as it is close to the match submission day

Hey everyone! This is my very first time responding to anything lol I’ve always read the threads, but never even created an account until Friday. Anyways, I got in on Thursday as well! Congrats to everyone else that got in, but if you haven’t gotten in yet, I wanted to tell you to keep going! Don’t give up! I’m a nontrad who’s been applying for years. Keep getting more experience, and it’ll happen for you!

Did you apply for the scholarship? Or was it just awarded to you?

Anyone who had an interview in December and got a prematch offer? If you did or knew someone, could you please let us know? Thank you!

I did not apply for the scholarship no, I just got an email telling me I’ve been selected to receive the scholarship!

Wow that’s awesome! Hopefully one of those emails would come my way soon! Lol good luck and congrats on getting into a school you really enjoy!

I’m also wondering this since I didn’t prematch. Could it harm me to send out a letter of intent before match day or even call the admissions committee about it? UTMB is my #1 🙁
I called the UTMB office of admissions back when I was trying to find out which schools accept update letters and they said they only accept intent letters after the match. @spookymulder26 said their friend sent it the first week of January, so who knows if that letter even made a difference or not. It couldn't hurt to send one out, but part of me wonders whether writing a LOI even matters if I rank UTMB #1 anyways. I guess the letter could be like a "hey I like u, do u like me? check yes or no" before match results come through

BTW, enjoy the holiday season y'all! I know we're all waiting anxiously but don't let that stop you from having a good time!!

Yeah wether that letter made a difference, my friend does not know. They ranked UTMB #1 and UTMB could have had them rated highly before match day. If you’re dead set on coming here rank them first. Try to enjoy the holidays guys! Not much we can do between now and Match submission day. Might as well enjoy time w our loved ones.

So could someone strategically rank a certain school as his or her #1 to increase one’s chance of acceptance?

An applicant should rank #1 the one they really want most. Don’t second guess which one you think is more likely to take you. Good luck to your sister

So could someone strategically rank a certain school as his or her #1 to increase one’s chance of acceptance?

According to TMDSAS, "Admission decisions at the participating schools are independent of the applicants’ school preference rankings because the schools have no knowledge of the applicants’ rankings."

Basically, your personal ranking of interviewed schools won't affect your chances of getting accepted any of them; however, you will only attend the highest ranked school that accepted you. So, rank schools based on where you want to go most.
For example, if you're accepted into UTMB and it's #1 on your list, that's where you get matched to! If you rank UTMB #2 and you're accepted into UTMB but not school #1, you still match to UTMB! On the other hand, if you are accepted to #1, that's where you go.

Here's the page I got the info from:

I might be wrong, so anyone feel free to correct me 🙂

Does UTMB rank their students during preclinical years?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN

All medical schools have this hidden ranking called “Medical Student Performance Evaluation” “MSPE” form whether the school has P/F, HP/P/F, or alphabetical grades. This form is sent to all residency program directors and they are able to see where the student stand in his or her class during both pre-clinical and clinical years.

This is why pass/fail curriculum does not hurt or help anyone over schools with grades and ranking. Just google “medical student performance evaluation” form. You will see what i am writing about.

The only medical students who are immune to these MSPE, secret ranking, clinical grades, AOA, and even usmle step scores are OMFS residents going through medical school through their MD integrated 6 year long residency programs.

Thank you for the explanation! I kept seeing those acronyms around SDN and was curious what they meant and how they relate to student rankings

How do I ensure that the school is seeing my updated grades? I updated them through TMDSAS and have submitted my new transcript to them. Does anyone have any idea how often do the admission's committee check the updates?

Med schools know that TMDSAS will send your updated transcripts after fall term grades are out, so it is part of their routine to update their applicant files.
If you have any new information in addition to your fall grades, a very short email to admissions would be ok as well.

When does the facebook get made? I am trying to find a roommate and apartment early. Also, any tips on housing? and do yall consider flooding in where yall choose to stay?
I think anyone can make it. No one just has yet.

we made our own fb then later the upper years made one and we all switched to it, so I would just wait. Most people find housing in May-June so you have time!

Is anyone sending a letter of intent before the preference ranking deadline? If so which email address are you sending it to?

I just called the UTMB Office of Admissions at (409) 772-6958, and they said there's no guarantee that their adcom will read a letter of intent before the preference ranking deadline; they'll just put it in your file. Most people email their letter of intent after Match Day, to Theresa Silva ([email protected]).

Thank you for the information! I sent an update letter about 2 weeks ago but I have not heard a confirmation that they have received it. Do you think I should call the office to confirm?

Hmm, did you ask if they accept update letters? 🤔

I ask because I emailed them mid December and they responded to say they don't accept update letters and will look at updated grades on TMDSAS.
Unfortunately, I also had publications and funding support that I can't update on TMDSAS.

Ah I'm not sure about update letters, but if you send an internal message through TMDSAS about updating coursework or publications, I'm sure the staff will let you change it! They allowed me to change Fall 2019 semester classes that were previously locked because I swapped one course to another early in the school year, and my TMDSAS GPA updated too once I put in the new grades.

Where did you notice this change? My GPA dropped a bit, but my GPA on TMDSAS did not change.

Click on Status and scroll down to the GPA section after you've updated your grades; your GPA may have changed there. Mine changed a little maybe a day or so after I entered new grades! (I also had to unlock and edit my courses because of a class that I swapped this semester. I confirmed when I finished editing via TMDSAS internal message, and the support team locked my semester courses again).
