Just got primary received email. Submitted 8/11 I believe -___- OOS so maybe that’s why

Don't worry I'm IS and work/research for the med school and haven't heard anything from them. Completed mid August.

Do you know if they accept 2 science letters instead of 1 science and 1 non-science? I didn't take many non-science courses besides my gen-eds, so I never found interest in those subjects nor hit it off with any of the professors.

They accepted a second science letter for me. I would email and ask them, but it should be fine

for people who interviewed already (esp. those who were accepted-congrats btw!), any tips for the interview? any types of questions I should prep for besides why medicine, why us, ethics stuff, and knowing my app? also, how much of the questions were research-focused (either about past experiences or very heavy emphasis on students doing research)? thanks for any feedback!

also: open or closed file? two 1-on-1 interviews or one 2-on-1 interview? (I have two people listed as interviewers. and one is the asst. director so I'm shook :nailbiting:)

Same here, got my invite 8/13. Interviews now scheduled up in early November. Is anyone's Dean's eval and letters of references still not checked off?

Open file I believe because they didn’t even ask me why medicine so I assume they had my PS sitting right there (obv still prep this question). I would suggest going on the website and reading up on the core competencies ( this is what I did per the advice of previous SDN threads). They did ask me about my research but just very generally. My interview was 1 interview with 2 interviewers

Yes, my letters of references are still not checked off

I just got an invitation to interview at the rural campus in Terre Haute. OOS Student

What do you think the likelihood of getting the Indianapolis campus is if you put it as your #1?
This depends a lot. IUSM has some sort of algorithm that considers your preference in context of your application; GPA, MCAT, what your interviewers think, your campus ranking, etc. That being said, there are a lot of pros to being at a regional campus.

Could someone who has interviewed here already share some info about the lenght of the interview, is it 30m, 45m? 1 or 2 interviews? I'm trying to plan my day and can't find that information, and I only received the time for the start of my interview.

What are the best aspects of IU? OOS Interviewing and finding it difficult to get a feel for the culture of IU through the website

How long was the interview?

So for the interview... it seems like there’s a number of activities that are offered at 2 different times (student panel, financial aid presentation, etc.) I’m guessing that we just choose to go to one of the times for each section? My interview is at 2:15 tomorrow and I want to make sure I’m doing everything right.

1) The option to pursue a scholarly concentration is honestly huge imo. Usually just involves some coursework between MS1 and MS2 year, maybe some monthly journal clubs throughout the year. These provide opportunities to hone in on an aspect of medicine that you find particularly interesting and gives you the opportunity to publish. For example, I currently have several research projects in the works that I expect to have all published (two of them first-author) and presented by the end of MS2 year. That's a pretty huge leg up before starting clinical years and it wouldn't have happened without the structure of my scholarly concentration. 2) IUSM wants you to be excited about their regional campuses. Not being in Indy has its drawbacks. For example, I believe most of the faculty at Indy are MD, where there are still some PhD faculty at the regional campuses. This makes education more clinical focused and can potentially make it easier to make connections for research (if thats your thing). Being in Indy also puts you in closer proximity to the higher ups at IUSM who "run the show" and its easier to build bonds with them there. However, there have been internal studies that find no difference in USMLE performance (ie. final course NBMEs, step scores, etc) between the campuses. Regional campuses offer a more tight knit community in which everyone knows and supports each other, which is huge considering these will be the most academically trying years of your life thus far. You get to know all your profs really well (if you decide to attend optional lectures). Overall, I am very glad I was placed at a regional campus. 3) IUSM is always striving to be better. They respond well to student feedback and have many student-run organizations that influence how IUSM teaches its material and that can be joined from any campus. In effort to improve health disparities, they provide training in microaggressions, biases, etc. They work to provide any support you need to get you through medical school, including tutoring, free question banks, and unlimited mental health resources.

Overall, the culture is really what you make of it. IUSM will support you if you just want to sit back and just attend classes for two years, and they'll support you if you wanna dive into research and become integrated into your community. I can't speak to all faculty, but at my regional campus, they really advocate for your learning both in and out of the classroom. For example, I had mandatory class on a day that I wanted to drive to Indy to observe a surgery; I submited the time away request and it was denied due to COVID precautions. The professor of that class personally reached out to the folks who had denied it, sent them multiple emails about why I should be able to leave class and observe this surgery. Because of him advocating on my behalf, they changed their mind and allowed me to go. It was an awesome experience to have a prof in your corner advocating for your learning.

Sorry for this novel lol

you check in 45 mins before and the interview is 40 mins bc zoom cuts off after 40 mins. the other sessions during the day are optional

Is there anything to do during that 45m window after you check in and before the interview?

I interviewed yesterday. For those of us who did interview yesterday, do you think our decisions will be sent next week or November 15th?

For those of you who already interviewed, are you sending thank you letters? If so, do you know where we should send them?

my interviewers gave me their emails so i was planning on sending thank you emails

Any unbalanced IS (low GPA high MCAT) folks with an II? I'm beginning to think IUSM favors people right down the center-lane with stats closer to the means, rather than a compensating GPA or MCAT. I wonder if it's different for in-state people.

Do they accept thank you letters?
I just sent one directly to my interviewer and he replied almost instantly. I don't usually send thank you letters but I felt a good connection and wanted him to know I appreciated the time we had. If you feel it's right, go for it!

I have a 3.6 cGPA 3.5 sGPA and a 515 MCAT (URM and in-state also) and I have an II.

Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare for the interview? I've never had such an important interview before and I'm a bit clueless on how to improve my interviewing skills.

So in terms of who gets what campus, it's not random, it's actually based on your application?

It's also based on when you submit your rankings. the students on the panel mentioned that each time you change your rankings you go to "the back of the line" so make it once and don't change it!

That's so kind! Is it ok if I bother you about how to write one? Did you make it long or was it pretty succinct? My interviewers were kind as well.

P.S. these don't hold any bearing on admission- right?

Pretty succint and no, I've heard we should send the thank you letter/email within the next 24 hours just to be sure, but I think by the time they get it, they've already made they recommendation. After all, they interview several people and immediately after the interview is when their memory is fresh.

PM me and I can send you my "template"

Did anybody else who has gotten an ii have to wait a long time for their prerequisites, letters of reference, and dean evals to be marked complete? I was invited for an interview on 09/16 and these items have still not been marked recieved.

I got an II a little over a week before you, and my LOR and prerequisites are still not marked and I don't have a date. My deans eval got marked a few days after my school sent in via email though, so you might want to check that.

Still waiting as well. I don't know if I should email but I don't want to come off as obnoxious.

I'm kind of conflicted because I have submitted everything and been done since 9/18 but I have yet to receive a date for my interview. Do you guys think it is ok to email them asking what is up or should I wait ?

So I got the primary app received 8/13, interview invite at 8/18, submitted everything 9/1 and only got my interview date last week 10/6. Dean's letter still not marked complete. I think yours is coming up soon.
