2020-2021 Kaiser (Tyson)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if Kaiser accepts either letters of interest, update letters, or both? Or has anyone sent one of these to Kaiser post interview? Thanks

I believe they only do so if offered an interview - that's what I have on my notes, at least. If I remember correctly, it is written somewhere on their website.

Has anyone that was complete in mid-August receive an ii yet? Praying there's hope

I was complete august 6th and haven’t heard anything back. They’re only scheduling out a week in advance though so I wouldn’t be too concerned yet.

Question for those who have already interviewed- I know you’re not allowed to share many details regarding interview day due to an NDA, but maybe you can answer a logistical question? I recently got an II, and I’m a bit confused reading the interview agenda. It says interviews last 2 hours, but it also says that there’s 5 MMI stations that each seem to be 9 minutes total (2 minutes prep and 7 minutes with the interviewer), and 1 traditional interview that’s 30 minutes max. That seems to add up to 75 minutes total, which is definitely not a full 2 hours. What happens during the other 45 minutes?

you’ll be split up into two groups. While one conducts their set of interviews, the others just wait it out. Kinda weird, but time goes by fast so you won’t even notice the break. i strongly recommend eating during this break and just RELAXING 🙂

Congrats to those accepted! :claps:

Anyone who may have interviewed early/mid-September hear anything yet? I interviewed 9/1, and still silence on this end.

9/8 here and I haven't heard anything. I'm guessing that's not great news, but who knows with this process. Id just like to hear back regardless of the decision.

How does 7/12 and silence make you all feel?

Also 9/1 and silence. Would name my first kid Kaiser if they accepted me.

I'm honestly pretty disappointed in the length of time it's taken to hear back. I interviewed 9/8, others even earlier with no response. It's frustrating. We've just surpassed 8 weeks (2 months). I mean, I can't be the only person to find this a bit preposterous.

If you don't get an A you will have to wait till March to get a reply. That's how they did it last year.

You're not the only one. I don't understand why schools can't release their decisions sooner. It's been 2 months since I interviewed (at Kaiser and a few other schools), yet I haven't heard a thing from them. If I understand the process correctly, it sounds like our fates were decided a long time ago, yet we are kept in the dark for who knows how long. Then you look at some schools with very quick turn arounds (UVA's 3 day decision turnaround comes to mind) and the confusion *intensifies*

I feel you. It really sucks. But I’m pretty sure Kaiser does things like Baylor, where they revisit students at each committee meeting so you are continually in the running /: yeah I agree, it’s not great for applicants who potentially have to wait months for a decision

I completed on 7/21 but haven't heard anything since :/ Is it a bad idea to write to the admissions email with a 'letter of intent' of sorts? This is my dream school as its close to family and support systems and its kinda bumming to have gone almost 4 months without hearing a word:/ I have an acceptance to a second school so I feel a kind of "what have I got to lose at this point" feeling, but I also don't want to hurt my chances.... any advice would be great my stressed out brain has had enough recently.

Anyone who is an MD-PHD appplicant hear back yet? Apparently last years thread they only have spots for 3 MD-PHD applicants but I wasn't sure if anyone got an interview yet?

i think they only accept updates post-II, unfortunately.

If you haven't heard anything yet, I encourage you to send an email. And to clarify, the number of accepted MD/PhD students remains to be determined; even for last year, it was supposed to be one spot.

Should the email be formatted to be a letter of intent? I am not sure if they accept pre-interview updates or should I ask them when MD-PHD interviews are held and vice versa?

And sorry for the spam but how is kaiser's program? What made you choose this school over the other MD/PHD programs? And how was the interview process?

Did anyone write thank you notes? I'm thinking about writing one to my traditional interviewer or maybe addressed to the adcom as a whole

While they typically do not accept pre-interview updates (for MD-only), I don't think it would do you any harm if you provided a substantial update. Doing so not only provides you an opportunity to ask about your application status, but an inquiring email by itself indicates interest.

My advice is that you should choose MD/PhD programs based on personal fit and research interests. Medical students ultimately learn the same material and take the same Boards in order to become a doctor. The same can not be said for PhDs. Caltech is one of the best places in the world for certain fields of research, and perhaps not a great choice for other fields.

The interview processes are essentially separate. You are invited by the medical school first and, if you pass that, are later invited to interview at Caltech.

Does anyone have tips to prepare for the MMI? This is my first and I'm pretty nervous. Any book/site recs for ethics?

I don't think there's anything you can really do to prepare! Just relax and enjoy the quickness of it! Also, it feels a little more low-stakes since you have so many stations!

Have they only sent out one wave of acceptances? I know I sound like an annoying premed I promise I am self-aware lmao I am just so stressed!!! I want to go here so bad and my friends have gotten acceptances already and I have none so far 🙁

you’re not alone!

so far people have reported A’s on two different days (10/21 and 11/4)

keep in mind that not everyone uses SDN so there could be more. I know it doesn’t help to hear that but it’s the truth.

just be patient!!! Distract yourself, try to have fun. That’s all we can do at this point.
