2020-2021 Mayo Clinic (Alix), Arizona

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm pretty sure everyone will only have one interview this cycle, but that interview will be used for all your campus preferences. So, let's say you also ranked AZ and MN 2+2, this interview would be used for all three.

But does that mean they will tell you if you get into all three or not?

Im being extra neurotic, but when they say an interview is at 3 CT, that would be 1 PT right? I’m freaking myself out cuz they say “CT” and not “CST” so it COULD be “CDT” which would mess up the hours lol. Plz help

Yup! Youre all good!

How were the interviews for you all if you’ve done one?
I had two 30 minute Zoom interviews, one with an MS4 and one with a faculty member. They let me give a preference for a day of this week to have my individual interviews, but the big information session is on Monday afternoon of each interview week. They also had a Q&A with current students on Sunday night, which is normally a pizza night in person. My interviews were pretty conversational, although they gave them specific questions that they wanted them to ask. Oh keep in mind I'm in Eastern Time so the time references are in terms of my time zone.

I have a quick questions for you all. I am an Arizona resident and applied to all Arizona schools excpet for Mayo with the idea that my MCAT was lower than their accepted (510 with a 121 CARS score) LM of 71. However, I have significant clinical experiences (2500 hours of paid emergency room scribing), volunteering, and research. After reading all the posts about Mayo accepting lower MCAT scores, I am interested in sending in an app for the Mayo clinic arizona campus as my primary choice. Do you guys think its to late to submit one? Thank you all and I hope you are all continuing to stay safe and healthy during these times!
Do it! I am one point above you at 511. I haven't gotten an interview invite, but I haven't gotten a hold or a rejection either. We won't get accepted if we don't try! Since 2020 effing sucks, if you need a donation for the application fee, PM your venmo and I will contribute.

I really appreciate your encouragment as well as the kind donation! After looking at the deadline for this school, I missed the primary application deadline. Thank you though, I really appreciate it!

How did you feel about those “specific questions” you mentioned?

Bummer, but I’m sure you’ll get in to other programs in Az! Best of luck

Has anyone who got a 10/13 II received the final booking date/time for their interview? I still haven't heard back and would like to finalize my schedule so I don't accidentally miss the interview day

Are the interviews open-file? What was the stress level?

I just interviewed last week and the interviews are partially open file. They have access to your personal statement, your secondaries, and your 3 most meaningful activities as listed in your AMCAS. They don't see your MCAT/GPA. They will provide all this info to you at the Monday welcome session 🙂
Overall, I would not worry too much at all. During the welcome session they emphasized that the interviews will be conversational, with some behavioral questions mixed in, but nothing too stressful.

It took two weeks for me to receive my final interview date & time. I received the confirmation exactly one week before the interview date, and was able to get both interviews on my preferred date.

If we want to a send thank you note to an interviewer, are we supposed to upload it to the portal or email the admissions office? I don’t know the interviewers emails

Edit: nvm, this info is found in the portal!

Are there any current 2+2 students lurking? Trying to find out more info about the Florida campus

For uploading thank you notes for our interviewers through the portal, did y'all upload 2 separate documents (one for each interviewer) or include both thank you notes in the same document?

Hi ya'll! I wanted to find more info about Mayo specific to the AZ campus but I'm having trouble finding things like student org lists, student run clinics, global health, etc. Is their website the only place in which I can look or should I look somewhere else?

I also could be totally blind and not see the info on their website (college.mayo.edu). Thank you in advance!

I don't know if there is a listing that is available.

No student run clinic, I think they were trying to get something organized with ASU but don't know the status of that

When would be a good time to send a letter of interest/intent? Had my interview earlier this week.

I think the consensus is that a LOI carries more weight later in the cycle, such as if you had been waitlisted or not heard back on a decision. From the school's perspective, of course you're interested, you just interviewed! Hearing from you would mean more later on once acceptances have gone out or they're considering moving applicants off the waitlist.

In general this is true, but Mayo is ~different~. I’m not sure if the AZ and MN adcoms work exactly the same way, but in MN they discuss interviewees <2 weeks post interview. When my friend interviewed there two years ago, they heavily suggested that she write an LOI prior to that discussion. She did, and she’s an M2 there now.

I stand corrected! Interesting lol. Given everything else that is said about Mayo, this seems to be on-brand

So they recommended sending a LOI even before the interview? Sorry if I misread that

Is it generally considered acceptable to include in a LOI if you have other acceptances but would choose Mayo over those schools? I've heard that can give the letter more weight but I also don't want to sound like a pompous jerk if I bring up other acceptances lol

I know in previous years Mayo has sent out requests for LOI to applicants that interviewed shortly before their acceptance release date.

I'm a premed, not an adcom, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I agree with you and think it makes the letter more meaningful, since, of course, someone with no As will be very interested. If your letter is humble and sincere, no reason to fear sounding pompous.

One caveat -- if you are going to do this, you should be referring to peer institutions. Saying you received an A from NYU but would happily give up the scholarship to attend Mayo means something, if it's true. Saying you'd give up Drexel for Mayo means something else. 😎

That makes sense. So you think it's probably not worth mentioning other As at all unless they're similar in ranking to Mayo? My As so far are at low-mid tier schools. Can I just write that I have a couple of other As but would choose Mayo over them or is it only meaningful if I specifically name the schools?

I'm confused about the Arizona time zone, especially for this Monday's information session. If it starts at 10 am Arizona time, would that be 9 am or 10 am PDT?

It's a great question, and I don't really know the answer. My guess would be that it doesn't buy you anything extra, so what's the point? Stick to how much you love Mayo and why you're a great fit.

Is it really worth mentioning that you'd prefer Mayo over XYZ low-mid tier, and does having those acceptance do anything at all to make you more attractive to Mayo? If the answer is no, then there is no reason to waste their time by mentioning it. JMHO.

If a train leaves Chicago .... 😎

The answer is actually very simple. 10:00 a.m. AZ time will always be 10:00 a.m. MST. When Daylight Savings Time ends (11/1 this year), wherever you are outside AZ will go back to PST, at which time AZ will be an hour ahead of you because they don't move clocks back and forth while you'll be moving your clocks back an hour. AZ stays on Mountain Standard Time year round. Until then, MST=PDT. Make sense?

It is 10 am. Once the time change happens, AZ will be an hour ahead.

thank you so much!! I was getting so confused haha but y'all helped me out 🙂

A heads up to anyone who hadn't heard it on the other thread--got an email this morning for a pre-II hold!

Complete 10/11.

That is a fast turnaround to hear back! I was complete 8/11 and haven't heard anything.

I was pleasantly surprised as well--figured I was very late in the app cycle. May help that I'm an in-state applicant? No idea how Mayo is evaluating apps this cycle...

Crossing my fingers for you, app buddy!

I think what is important is if you honestly believe and can express it with a concrete example of why you would prefer to be a student at Mayo over any other school you would possibly get an acceptance to this year.

I would stay away from mayo over XY or Z specifically but focus on why Mayo.

I’m curious as to what others think about the 2+2 Mayo program. Does it carry the same prestige in general and for residencies as the normal MN or AZ campuses? I’m wanting to know this now because I know Mayo is big on letter of intents and want to make sure I make the right decision with something like that

7/21 and sitting in limbo, even gave them an update already. Wondering if that sent me to the end of the queue

I have a dumb question. Is a pre-II hold the same thing as being waitlisted for an interview? Thank you in advance!

Just an applicant so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I believe an II waitlist implies you’ll get one eventually if enough people that currently hold them cancel or more spots become available whereas a hold means your application is not currently being considered but will be re-reviewed later in the cycle for comparison to the overall applicant pool.

edit: just saw @Saganomics message so ignore mine

I don't think so. A WL is used when they like you, but not enough to give you an A now, so they put you on a list that they expect to go to later when people who have received As turn them down.

A hold means that they have reviewed you and don't want to make a decision on you until they have reviewed more files. You are not waiting for someone to turn down an II -- to me, that's the big difference between a hold and a WL. They still have IIs to give, but are not sure that they want to give one to you. So they are telling you that they have reviewed you and like you enough not to send you a R now, but not enough to send you an II, so please stand by until they have reviewed more people and have a better idea where you stand in their pool this cycle.

That helps SO much, thank you! I haven't gotten any communication as of yet, but if and when I do, now I will know what it means 🙂 Thank you!

I know you want to be the very best, perhaps like no one ever was so where you go is important

So this will be interesting to see how it plays out through the next couple years.

Since some 2+2 students start at MN and do their basic science there, some start in AZ and do their basic science here but both do their clinicals how they will be looked at.
