2020-2021 Miami (Miller)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How did you send the update? I can't find anything on how..
I can't remember to be honest... I think there was a way back then in the portal, but I may have emailed it in. You can email admissions and they should be able to let you know

What does it mean if you’re under review in gray text? Doomed?
I was grey from when I submitted until they turned green on the above mentioned dates! Might be the "placeholder" message? I'm not sure exactly, but I'm sure you're fine! My friend at Miller said they're typically very slow with the whole process (and that's in a non COVID year).

Wondering if anybody might have an answer to this... I submitted my secondary 8/5 and was marked "under review" right away, but I was also in that large group of people that hadn't had their LOR's marked as received until well into September. Do you think the complete date after LOR's were marked will be the date they're going off of for scoring?

I don’t know if anyone knows how Miami reviews apps lol. I read somewhere that it might be based on your primary app verification date but who knows.

on the secondary, when it asks for a " brief" description - how many sentences or words did you write?

For anyone who has interviewed already, what were they like? My itinerary has a 2-hour interview (I am assuming ethical scenarios) and another 1-hour interview (I am assuming open file one-on-one). How stressful were they on a scale of 1-10?

I think the length of this question might vary person to person, like if you have more experience in an area, I would think it would make sense to include thorough descriptions about it. for example, when they asked about research experiences, I had three different ones to draw from, so I included them all (and described each one from an angle that brought something different to the table), so my word count for that section ended up being about 500 words, but again that's from listing 3 different unique experiences and describing them. I think since there is no word limit, any amount that makes sense based on you would be fine 🙂

Each of those should be one hour each. If you have extra time in that block, there's either some other presentation (medical student Q&A, etc) or just down time where you log off and can log back in later.

Saw that there is a "virtual lunch with medical students" on the schedule. Does this mean we have to eat in front of our computers while making conversation...? Or do we have the option to go off camera because this sounds so awkward and uncomfortable lol

On my interview day, nobody really ate during the virtual lunch lol. I think everyone was worried about the same thing you stated. It's mainly a time where you can ask questions and listen to the med students talk about their experience. They did let us go a little early to eat before our afternoon interviews since they noticed no one really ate.

I turned off my camera, ate quickly, and turned it back on.

Hey friends. To those who have interviewed for both the MD and MD/MPH programs, was it split into two days like it indicates on the portal? Or do they condense it into one day? I see there are morning and afternoon slots to interview within your interview day. If it is condensed into one day, which is first (MD or MD/MPH).

For the last cycle, there was a post on reddit about how Miami ghosts applicants on the basis of casper score
(side note: hahah casper.. ghosting... lol i just that was funny)
I wonder if this is what may happen this cycle esp since there doesn't seem to be a set timeline for getting scored. I know it's too early to jump to these conclusions & FL schools are notoriously slow, so this is all just for some speculative discussion lol
Gah I hate not knowing how I did on Casper... So many of my schools use it and the only one I've heard back from that uses it is a state school.

did anyone who got any acceptances/interviews NOT fill out every single optional essay? I'm wondering if I can submit the secondary without the travel essay and still have a chance

I filled them all out but if it's labeled optional I would treat it as optional. If they would reject someone because of a blank optional essay, then it wasn't optional, and I don't think they would have labeled it as such. Have you not traveled much at all? That seems like a relatively easy one to write something about.

Have you never traveled? I literally wrote an essay about getting lost in Rome and not being able to effectively communicate with the woman who eventually helped me. There is no requirement for this to have anything to do with medicine, they're more for giving your interviewers something to work with. Like, if you write about how you played soccer for 12 years, they're probably going to find you an interviewer who really likes soccer. Just an example.

I'm a little surprised by these responses. Perhaps it will surprise you to hear this, but international travel (or even extensive domestic travel, really) is not something many (most?) people can afford or have the privilege to do.

In response to the original question, I say treat optional as optional. Better to leave it blank than to send them a half-assed answer.

Just jumping in and giving my $0.02, travel doesn't necessarily have to constitute international travels or large distances. Your visit to a local zoo or a nearby city or the beach may all be considered "travels" its what you share about the experience that stands out to adcom.

This was my mindset, at least. To me travel can mean experiencing things outside of the bubble of your own world. It could be some memorable trips in the same area. I certainly didn't suggest it had to be international or expensive travel to qualify as a response to the essay, I just said essentially that it seems like a topic most people would have something interesting to write something about.

It was condensed into one day for me. I remember one of the faculty saying something about interview review being shared with both committees (MD and MD/MPH), but usually (in non-covid years) they have two days interviews, according to one of my interviewers!

Does anyone know when they give you a score post-interview if it is JUST based on the interview or does it include your AMCAS/Secondary "score"? Like is everyone at an even playing field once they get an interview, or is your written application still factored into how they vote/score you?

Their scoring logic confuses me.

My understanding is it’s everything. Application + interview.

I have read that they score you while reading your primary, secondary, letters, and supporting docs, and THAT score is what they use to select people to interview.
I'm sure an interview score will be added to that as they make admission decisions.

Is it too late to apply? Does Miami value earlier applications?

I would say that it's getting pretty late -- however, I'm a big fan of personal agency, so if you think that you stand a chance, go for it my friend! 👍

I completed my application on 08/04, and it hasn't been scored yet. So, there's a pretty big delay in terms of processing.

How do you know if you got scored? What does it say? lol
Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review. You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March

How long does it normally take after you’ve been scored to receive an interview?

Maybe they got delayed and then it got too late ? I hope we don’t have to wait until the next published date which is mid November.

@Endee @palmhead143 @sunkissedmelanin Congrats y'all! Did they notify you this morning or last night? Was it by email or phone?

I got the "We hope you enjoy...your final admissions committee decision will be available shortly..." notification in my portal a few days ago but I haven't heard anything yet.
