2020-2021 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am so confused I forgot about this school and just got an admission to their MPH program. I applied MD/MPH but have not been invited to interview for their MD program this cycle. I guess I can just ignore this?? Unless I want to take a gap year and pursue my MPH here ?

Ok so I am extremely confused! I am scheduled to interview on 03/09, but I received the A tonight. Is this a mistake or are they making decisions based on VITA alone ? Also when I click on the offer letter it logs me out of the portal. I will reach out to admissions but if anyone has an insight please please comment
If you applied to a dual degree program (like MD/MPH), then you likely got an acceptance letter for the non-MD program you designated on AMCAS and your secondary application.

Did anyone get an acceptance decision via the portal but not expect it? Do they send acceptances for just the MPH? Just happened at 9:30pm
Yea, I just got the A for the MPH program. I interviewed 1/26 so this was really unexpected to hear back so early. From what I read on the offer letter, it looks like its a completely separate process for the MD admission though so we shall wait and see what happens I guess.

lol same here. I have my interview tomorrow morning and I saw the email and was like "did they just reject me before my interview?" hahaha

Can someone confirm that when we email them saying we want to accept the offer and respond to their portal form, it doesn't lock us in? I thought we could hold infinitely many acceptances until 4/30...
No, it won't lock you in. There are less confusing instructions in the official offer letter on the portal.

Basically, you have 14 days from acceptance to pay $100 and select Plan To Enroll in the AMCAS tool (opening this Friday). PTE is not the same as Commit to Enroll (Available April 30th). Basically, by doing all of this, you are just holding your seat for the time being and not making any permanent choices.

Were all the A sent out just for MPH or were there any MD A also?

I have been trying to decipher these offer conditions for a day now and they conflict each other at every turn. The offer letter says to adhere to the posted due date in the offer reply form (which mine says 2 calendar days) but then goes on to say the $100 must be in 14 days. Then it references a posted due date (that doesn't appear to be anywhere) and says to mark "Plan to Enroll".

The offer form itself says nothing about 14 days, but just references a "due date" and then instead of saying that you need to click "Plan to Enroll" it says press "Commit to Enroll". Also what even is this acceptance form? Is this locking in your choice or what? Also you have to email them a choice too? Jesus Christ.

Also their website lists COMPLETELY different deadlines and dates than any of the offer letters or offer form. It lists that the deposit and "Plan to Enroll" or "Commit to Enroll" be completed by April 30th. Also it says everyone has 14 days to return the form, not this 2 calendar day mess.

Can anyone make heads or tails of this? I'm thinking I'm going to have to call tomorrow morning. I want to hold the spot but I don't want to commit yet obviously..
Can anyone tell me how to actually pay the deposit? I didn’t see a link anywhere

Go to the “Pre-Matric” tab and click Deposit. You will be able to pay for it there. I would just pay it now instead of waiting 14 days, but you can e-mail admissions for clarification.

You are not locking in your choice by e-mailing, you are just accepting and holding your seat in the application cycle.

The “Plan to Enroll” / “Commit to Enroll” are options only available on AMCAS. This AMCAS tool opens on Feb 19th and is only available to applicants with at least one acceptance. PTE is NOT required until April 30th, but the option to PTE will be available on this date (starting tomorrow). If you select this tool between Feb 19 and April 30, it’s basically telling other schools “this is my top choice at the moment”. You can only PTE at one school at a time and you can change the school you PTE during this time frame.

On April 15th, we have to narrow down our acceptances to 3 acceptances only but you can remain on waitlists.

There is a specific deadline, April 30th, to choose a school at which we “Plan to Enroll”, meaning you need to narrow your acceptances to only 1 school but you can remain on waitlists. When you click PTE, all other schools will see that you have an acceptance. PTE is required on this date. You can also get you deposit back if you withdrawal from a school by this date. The CTE option becomes available on this date.

“Commit to Enroll” is due by whichever deadline set by the school. This is locking in your choice for matriculation and removing you from all other waitlists. You do NOT need to CTE the day the option becomes available. Wait until the required deadline for the school you were accepted to if you are still hoping to get off another waitlist.

Good morning, if anyone is on here and hopeful for post-interview notifications like I am, stay positive despite the odds! What helped my anxiety was believing to "trust the process" MORE than my ability to control the situation. Loosen your grip on control. We can't do anything more at this point (updates, etc.).

Hey, thanks for this! Are we absolutely sure that we do not need to select "Plan to Enroll" within 2 weeks? The portal states: "A $100 Admissions Deposit must be paid within 14 calendar days to hold your seat in the entering class. If you do not submit your deposit by 11:59 pm on the posted due date and also select “Plan to Enroll,” your acceptance offer will be withdrawn," which makes it seem like we are expected to both pay the deposit and select PTE within 2 weeks in order to hold our acceptance.

hmm you’re right it does say that, but on the admissions protocol portion of the website it lists this blurb in the April 30th, 2021 section

"To retain your place in the entering class, you must click on "Admissions Decision" in the left blue menu bar and click on "Offer Response" 14 calendar days of this admissions decision. A $100 Admissions Deposit will be due between April 15 –April 30, 2021. If you do not submit your deposit by 11:59 pm April 30, 2021, and also select “Plan to Enroll” your acceptance offer will be withdrawn."

It would not make sense for Downstate to require you to PTE right now as Downstate is unable to confirm whether or not you PTE'd prior to April 30. All they can see between Feb 19th and April 30th is aggregate data on TOTAL PTEs to their school and not individual information.

same same same....we have been waiting for what feels like nearly a year....oh wait its been basically HALF A FREAKING YEAR....i cant wait any more
yeah, after not getting any more interviews from the 30 other schools i applied to, i was like 😰😰😰
and really hoping that feb would fulfill the “you only need one interview to get into med school!” mantra ppl have been telling me... but feels bad rn :c

Also- does anyone know if downstate prefer not to receive updates during this limbo period? Like is the best practice to wait and see if we’re waitlisted, to send a letter of intent?

Am also questioning this - I feel like it's best not to send a letter of intent this week since they may be sending more out throughout the week. So I'd wait it out this week at least.

Yes, looks like they fixed the wording in the portal a bit!

Ive sent in an update letter like last month, so yes maybe a letter of intent would seal the deal this week or next week by monday ....im nervous tehe

Yeah, that's a good point. I just don't want to annoy the admissions office if they're in the middle of sending out decisions lol so idk. Best to do what you feel is right though!!

Does downstate participate in the AMCAS choose your medical school tool?
Also for those who paid the $100 deposit does it show up as complete on your portal?

Is everyone paying the $100 deposit as a means of holding their spot/accepting their offer.

My portal always displayed the message depicted above, so I was never under the impression that I have to pay it prior to the April 15th-Aptil 30th dates in order to hold my position in the class. However, I have seen a lot of people saying that you must pay it w/i 14 days of acceptance to hold your spot.

I planned to pay the deposit closer to April, is anyone else doing this?

So I applied to their MD/MPH program in a previous cycle and this happened to me I was accepted to the MPH program but ultimately was rejected from the MD program, the decisions are separate. I did take a gap year and just finished the MPH program at Downstate so I am happy to answer any questions about the MPH for anyone interested in taking a gap year or for those who are interested in the MPH program in general.

Edit: I should also add I was not invited to interview in my previous cycle either (I did interview this cycle post-MPH), the MPH program acceptance also came out of no where for me as well lol

I would email admissions and ask them to clarify, but I paid earlier just to be safe.

For everyone wondering about the deposit not updating on the portal, I spoke with admissions and they said they will mark the deposits as being received after they run their own internal report (not sure when that would be).

Also, Downstate just appeared on my choose your medical school tool. Wasn't there this morning for me either.

question did you just email them? They give pretty vague email responses so was wondering if there's another way of contacting them. Thanks!

I was in your boat last year, felt the same way. Pushed thru reapplied and have 2 MD acceptances this cycle. Stay strong, you will get there eventually
It's just very hard mentally tbh. What changed for you?

hey for anyone who hasn't received an interview yet, I emailed and they are still sending out invites soooo, sorta hopeful lol

Not much honestly, I rewrote my app and had another year of clinical experience. So many aspects of this process are subjective when you get to the interview stage, it hard to say what was different year to year

Any previous interviewees have any tips for the interview? Mine is coming up next week and it's my first and only of the cycle, so I really want to crush it!
Know your application in and out. It’s possible that you could have a stress interview, so don’t freak out. Remain collected, acknowledge any weaknesses in your app and show some reflection. How did you change your strategies? What did you do to improve? What have you learned going forward?

Look up your interviewer beforehand - they usually pick someone who has some sort of connection to something on your app, so you can use that to your advantage. Prepare some questions you have about Downstate. Stay calm - its ok to take a deep breath before answering. Also, what 14_karat said.

+1 on the stress interview. My interviewer basically showed no facial emotion at all until the very end, when we talked about his research.
I spent like 15 minutes discussing my poor grades in the first 2 yrs of college and how I worked to improve myself.
Also, my interviewer and I couldn't have been more different. We tried talking about hobbies but we literally had no interests in common lol.

Fwiw, Downstate was my first med school interview and it was very chill! My interviewer was super nice and kept apologizing when she had to ask scripted questions lol (all the scripted questions I got were included in the interview feedback here on SDN). She seemed like she wanted to actually get to know me beyond my application. Good luck!!!
