2020-2021 UC Davis

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I didn't take the SJT and ended up getting a Davis secondary after, now its too late to take another. I know they highly encourage taking it, but there's nothing I can do now, hopefully it won't count against me.

But I don't like to ambiguous information they are putting out "if it helps in our holistic process we will utilize the scores" are y'all using the SJT or not? lol

From what I read the SJT scores do not get released to schools until October 14th - I took it on September 2nd and received my secondary Sept 8th, but I don't think Davis has the scores....

They don't. The scores get released to the schools and the applicants on the same day (October 14th).

Took my SJT this morning and it was an utter disaster. i was scheduled to take it early in the morning and I logged on 20 minutes early just in case. It took 12 minutes to just get connected to a proctor and then it disconnected so I had to wait another 10 minutes. Then this next proctor was a **** show, I granted permission for the remote access thing and he’d type one thing or initiate the set up and then disappear for 4-5 minutes. I had to type “hello?” and it was like he forgot about me and then he’d continue the process and it would say “error, this session has expired” so he started all over again. I have the Catalina update on my MacBook and that requires an additional step- which is supposed to be simple but idk why it was over complicated. Then eventually I got disconnected again. The third proctor was at least successful in allowing me to take my exam but it was such a slowwwww and annoying process. There was no update or feedback from them saying “I’m working on it” or whatever. I was beyond irritating at this point and I don’t get mad easily. I obv couldn’t just get up and leave but I also couldn’t sit there and watch a YouTube video or something so I just stared at the screen.

I started my test 80 minutes late but I’m still grateful i had the chance to take it. I hope I did well tho bc I was so annoyed with all that.

i’d advise against taking the test if you have a very strong application bc it was such a headache. my stats are on the lower end so I felt the need to take it to perhaps enhance my app.

not sure if you already know but they added a 9/25 sjt date. not sure if there are any spots available tho

Stumbled upon this within AAMC's MSAR Advisor Report which is an up to date link. This makes no sense for UC Davis though, has to be an error right?

I think the dates are for the last dates they will extend secondaries/interviews. As in secondary will be offered up until jan 31 and interviews will be offered up until march 31. idk I could be wrong, but that's how i interpreted it.

Has anyone interviewed or has been invited for an interview?

I also have no secondary, IS, went to school in NorCal, have central CA experience, service heavy app, transmitted first day...

Does anyone who does not have an MCAT score show complete after submitting secondary? I have no score yet and submitted secondary and it is still saying incomplete. I thought they will review files for II without an MCAT. Thanks for responding.

still no secondary... time to give up on this one?
They send secondaries all the way until January. I wouldn't say give up, but chances don't necessarily improve over time since an earlier submitted secondary has you competing for a larger pool of spots. I would still be hopeful if you feel your application doesn't have any red flags.

Really want to find a recording of the webinar now. Are we able to view it after it's been streamed?

Did they mention anything about interview format, etc.?

All they said is they're using a new video platform that's more conducive for their MMI format. And troubleshooting that is why their interview season has been delayed a bit.

Just received UC Davis Secondary!
App submitted: 7/30
App verified: 9/9
SJT: 9/10
IS, undergrad in NorCal, Masters in NorCal, URM, non-tranditional

I watched the virtual info session this morning. Here’s the big points regarding this cycle:
  • First interview date will be 10/9
  • Aiming for II to be out in the next week or two
  • They have received 700 more applications this cycle than usual (~7700 so far)
  • They send approx. half of applicants a secondary (~3500); they may send more this cycle since they have more applicants
  • Typically have 500 interview slots and they interview until mid-April

Wow, 10/9 is 3 weeks away. I would expect at least a 2 week turn around between II and IA?

MS1 here. Any questions feel free to send me a message.
Interviews will be held via Zoom this year. There is at least one set of eyes who looks at your application prior to sending an interview invite. Last year, there were folks who had interviews in early April and interview invites are sent sporadically.

Oh awesome! Since Davis has historically done MMIs, I assume they'll be using breakout rooms on Zoom. Do you happen to know if Davis is making any curriculum changes due to the upcoming Step 1 P/F change?

They are making changes to the curriculum. In fact, next year it will be organ system-based curriculum. Courses are pass/fail already and the quizzes we take every 2 weeks are integrated and they actually feel more like exams. Integrated in that you sit for your quiz and you are tested in all the courses at once. In addition, they are timed to simulated STEP 1 allocated time per question.

I'm not sure if they will still be using the MMI structure this year tbh.

I just got my secondary, and I am interested in applying to both the REACH and Academic Research Careers for Medical Doctors (ARC-MD) program. I have supporting experience and passion for both programs, but I understand that I cannot enroll in both (considering I even get in).

Should I still apply to two programs? I'm worried that it adcoms may perceive it as indecision or overambitious. Thank you for any feedback!

Yes apply to both! Ultimately, you will only be given acceptance into one program. But if you fit both missions why not cast a larger net. If selected for an interview into both or either, they will determine which program you would mesh well with. Just as a note, for REACH program students will do 3rd year rotations in Stockton/Modesto Kaisers.

Do you think a bad sjt score will be used against us? Or is it better to void or not take it? Hate the ambiguity regarding whether or not they will use the scores...

Not sure. UCD website says they MAY use it if it would our application. But I am just going to take it today and see how it goes. At least this better than Casper where you dont even know what you got and it's free. lol

How did you prepare for it?

I just dont like it because it's so subjective. At least with casper we can justify our responses. With SJT, we have to discern between effective and VERY effective, which is subjective and we get docked points if we do not get the exact answer. That's what I'm worried about. And it stays on your record I guess so if you have to reapply, they will use it next cycle and you cannot retake it
