yeah the WA verification is a little excessive in my opinion. I know tax money goes into the Med School and they have a responsibility to a. produce MDs that stay in WA and b. offer reasonable tuition rates for their IS students....but the lengths they go to seem unnecessary. WSU's was an email and I was verified in <1 wk.

I understand why they prefer IS/IR applicants, it’s just an excessively detailed process to prove residency IMO. I mean, WSU didn’t even ask me to verify my residency before sending me a secondary...

Interesting. My parents live out of state and I am only 25, but I have lived here for 18 years, graduated HS and undergrad here and they have not requested verification, although they did state that verification could be requested later so who knows.

For WSU I had to do their official verification because my parents live OOS, but they verified me in 2 weeks
 
I have no idea what goes into their residency request criteria, then. Everything thus far has just been conjecture from anecdotes posted in last year's thread and my personal experience with the process. I wonder if they are sending of residency verification in waves like they did with the history requests and secondaries. If anyone calls WA cohort admissions, let us know!

OOR, filled out mission statement form this week, then got this today:


"Thank you for applying to the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM). We have completed a preliminary review of your application, and as an out-of-region candidate, you did not meet the criteria for further consideration to the MD program.

Please know that as a public institution, we have a strong preference for applicants from the WWAMI region (those with legal residence in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.) This means that it is significantly more competitive to gain admission as an out-of-region applicant.

We thank you for your interest in the UWSOM, and wish you the best of luck on the rest of the application cycle."

Sorry to hear that :/ Don't feel bad though, UW basically has an in-region requirement more than bias. You have to have some sort of overwhelming and compelling story to get in OOR. You'll get into your dream school stud

I'm an OOR applicant who got the mission statement request too. I wonder what kind of "long-term experiences working with underserved communities" they're looking for.

A fellow applicant, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I consider it any long-term involvement (at least 1-2 years?) Maybe working at homeless shelter? Food bank? other orgs for impoverished areas? E.g. I spoke about coming from a very urban, underserved community + current service involvements with that community i've done for several years + a project I've been involved with over the last 1+ years in rural, impoverished areas

As previously discussed in this thread, the OOR acceptance rate is incredibly low (.3%). Long-term experience does not mean work in a food bank or at a homeless shelter, unless you were on staff and/or had a leadership role. Otherwise, these are pretty basic things that most folks do. Examples admissions has told me were things such as Teacher for America, Americorp, etc.

Coming from an underserved area and speaking to how you contribute to that area is more aligned with the type of candidate they may be seeking. Anon may be a likely candidate for secondary but most folks are R pre-secondary. If that happens @Miniaus , I wouldn't take it personally. Pre-secondary Rs for OOR candidates are the norm.

Yes my bad, I should've clarified that helping out a few times here and there wouldn't fit what they're wanting, but leadership/work like you mentioned. Thank you for that.

I've done a few years of work in a rural region and among some underserved populations, but not anything big-name like TFA or Peace Corps. Do you think that's an automatic no?

I say shoot your shot. If you already paid for the primary, no harm in submission, especially since they have made the 2° free for everyone this year. Just know that if you get the R after submitting the mission fit request, that its not a reflection on your application. Of ~7000 OOR applicants....they take ~10 (i think ~60 are interviewed).
 
I am OOS as well. Received following email last week about my secondary and no mission statement request. Have an almost 2 years of clinical volunteering experience in an under-served area.

Thank you for applying to the University of Washington School of Medicine. We have received your preliminary application from AMCAS, and in the near future your file will undergo a preliminary review. This review will take 2-3 weeks.

You will be notified as soon as possible if you are selected to submit secondary application materials. All secondary application materials are due in our office by ......

How have societal inequities in the U.S. affected you or patients you’ve worked with?

For this secondary question, is it asking you to discuss underserved or marginalized populations you have worked with in general or only patients in a medical setting?

I am just trying to figure out this secondary because it seems like a lot of the questions overlap in terms of my experiences.

The prompt says "patients" so I would assume they want something from a clinical setting.
 
Does anyone have any insight on whether UW will require CASPER snapshot?

I don't think so. I might be wrong, but they have not mentioned anything about CASPER snapshot on their website or their secondary application. If they require it, UW will list it on their website. Otherwise, I would take that as UW does not require CAPSER snapshot.
 
Just to make sure I am understanding correctly (apologies if this question has been asked before), has UW began sending secondary applications to general admission Washington residents (in-State applicants) yet? If so, does UW require your CASPER score to be submitted before they send you a secondary application request? My Casper test date is in late September and I'm worried I'm going to be held back due to this!

I don’t think I know what you mean by general admission. There are some WA applicants that have received secondaries, though. Not sure any of us are complete, yet (chime in if you are, friends). I’m still waiting on residency verification. Also, not sure about CASPer. Mine was done in June so it wasn’t something I was waiting on.

Also, I think some of the other WWAMI sites have finished residency verification.

By other WWAMI sites do you mean other states? I was wondering about this as a Montana resident. I just submitted my residency verification, and am still waiting on that. Spoke with someone in their office today who said they were super swamped and it was taking a while to get through them all. Just trying to keep an eye on how things are looking for other MT applicants, as well as other states. Good luck to all!!

I got an email saying complete - I thought they were doing the residency verification before the secondary invite. Or at least that is how I got it.

Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho make up what UW considers the WWAMI region. Thats why the term in here is In/Out-of-Region, not state. SO WWAMI sites, i mean those states.

and It sounds like Montana is backed up. I think someone from Idaho finished and is cleared. @dr.xc, are you from WA? If so, then it sounds like some WA folks are complete, too.

For me, I received the Washington Residency Form (basically a history of residency in the application portal). Then a week later the secondary and Verification of Legal Residence request. Submitted the secondary the same day and received the Complete email. However, my portal is Incomplete because I am pending residency verification. 2 days later, I received the UW NetID login information and submitted my residency verification packet.

Same :/ I have extensive experiences serving underserved communities, but I did not meet the criteria either. I wonder how many OOR applicants have received secondaries, if any so far.
 
I am in-region and have had a completed app for a couple weeks...anybody have any idea when interviews to MD applicants will start?

They typically have a regional schedule. Here is a post from page 1. Likely delayed due to COVID. Would you mind sharing which state you're from?

  • Wyoming: WY interviews took place January 27-30, the year before was in early February.

Non-TRUST Washington interviews are held in Spokane 2 separate weeks: November 18 - 21, 2019 and February 3 - 6, 2020.

Seattle
Interviews are held in Seattle October, 2019 through the last week in January, 2020.
CUSP interviews are held in Seattle, January 13 and 14, 2020.

Wyoming
Wyoming resident interviews are held in Laramie (TRUST and non-TRUST): January 27 - 30, 2020.

Alaska

Their admissions office is pretty responsive! I emailed with a question the Friday before Labor Day weekend, and I heard back on Labor Day from someone in their office. The residency office is (understandably) less responsive, I sent a question in around the same time and am still waiting on a response.

would you mind telling us when did you submit the ‘pre-secondary/mission statement’? I’m OOS and waiting for secondary.
 
Are they going to look at our primary and mission statement before extending a secondary for OOR? Or is it just based on the mission statement?

My apologies if I didn’t understand or misinterpret your question. But let me try to share what i know about this school so far (I’m an OOS and an applicant like you)

They screen your primary extensively, especially if you’re OOS. After that if they like you, like if you’ve served underserved and if you’re disadvantaged and you included that in your primary application, they will ask for pre-secondary/mission statement. I’ve heard people getting R without getting that pre-secondary request. After that, if you fit their mission than they will send the secondary. This is what I know so far, please correct me if you know anything else as I’m interested to know more about this school and their programs. I hope that answer your question.

I would guess primary has already been completely reviewed, so I'm sure it's taken into account. But also another OOS applicant (so not an adcom, I may be wrong). but I would agree with @futurephysician74! that it's already all been accounted for and they're really focusing on the mission request (which to receive one took substantial experiences) So I would not worry about a trivial explanation like that. They have your primary handy if they need clarification I'm sure
 
how long did it take for people to hear back about a secondary after sending in the mission statement?
