2022-2023 UT Tyler

Update from tonight’s meet and greet. They’ll be sending out prematches at the earliest December 1st but definitely before the holidays. And they’re giving out 268 interview invites.
Are they doing 24 people per day moving forward? That is interesting, I remember someone in an earlier interview on this thread said 140-160 was their goal at the time. More nerve-wracking with that increase!

It is surprising to see the 260+ number. With their focus on East Texas, they really dont need to interview. It also didnt seem like they were doing too many each interview date?

You mean total ? they say how many are they left?
Yes total. Idk how many they have left to give out.

Yeah there was definitely more than 12 people there today. Surprisingly most of us weren’t from anywhere near Tyler.

Interesting! Maybe the first few rounds of interviews were focused on ETX and they have started branching out further for people who fit the mission!

Yep- I interviewed day one and every single one of us had close connections to ETX!

Yayyy dec 1! That's crazy, my interview date they were at 140 but I'm glad more people get the oppurtunity.

If they do calls, the area code here is mostly 903!

Maybe they interview EXT people first, not they are down to general texas pile... and perhabs OOS at the end. I know a near by school that interviews OOS last.

Appreciate the info!! And this number makes a lot more sense. It doesn’t seem feasible to only interview 140 students for a class of 40.

That would make sense. On my interview day I’d say 10/12 people were from ETX directly, but I honestly don’t think there’s that many ETX premeds, with the only schools in region not having a heavy emphasis on premedical science.

With that said, with the emergence of UTT medical school I’m willing to bet schools in the region like UTT undergrad and SFA will have more premeds in the coming years.

My best bet is that they send 40 prematches Dec 1st and a bunch of waitlists and then start pulling people off WL as prematches drop? Or is that a weird way to go about this

Not exactly. They may send 40 prematches, but let’s say 20 students match at a different school they ranked higher. That means they will fill the now open 20 spots in the match. After the match, all unmatched students will be waitlisted and some may be pulled off of it from March - June/July (whenever orientation starts)

Trying to predict and prognosticate about what a new school will do during their very first application cycle is kind of a waste of time, I think.
But if you guys enjoy doing it, keep on keeping on.

Yeah, that's fair. I might as well not worry too much about it

I only know one person that went to Tyler for something health related and is now an ICU Nurse.

What if your scheduled to interview after Dec 1st. Does that automatically mean you cant get a prematch

Prematch period is from October 15th - late January (idk the exact date). Anybody who has interviewed will be eligible for a prematch. I can’t say anything beyond that since I don’t know anything else. As @wysdoc said we have no historical information to go off of so anything said beyond that would be just guessing. I’d hope for the best, but remember the vast majority of Texans don’t hear anything until at least March.

As a reapplicant with experience, this process is a waiting game. It isn’t fair but it’s what we have to live with.

especially since they’re making the early assurance thing here

Does anyone know how many more interview invites they're giving out as of this week? And what their first class size will be?

UT Regents Approve Project Cost of $308M for UT Tyler Medical Education Building Construction
Saw this, seems like they're predicting the new building will be done in March 2025 and it'll connect to UT Health. Sounds like the building will have a lot of work put into it (cannot fathom that it'll cost $308 million).
A regular classes only building does not.

The Medical Education Building, a planned five-story, nearly 248,000-square-foot facility, will support interdisciplinary education for graduate medical students, resident training, and nursing, and aid as part of a medical education program expansion throughout the UT Health East Texas Health System. In addition, the Medical Education Building will provide outpatient and specialty clinical services with exam rooms, specimen collection/processing, and imaging facilities.

It is designed to have blended programming and clinical spaces for patient care, including women's imaging, women's health, diagnostic center, orthopedics, and sports medicine, pulmonary and a surgery center to support medical residents in the graduate medical education programs.

Yeah seems like it won't be exclusively for classrooms which makes sense.

For y'all that have interviewed, where did you rank Tyler and why? I'm just trying to see if there's anything I'm not taking into consideration or if this school is truly the best fit for me.

Hi! I received an invite to interview and I selected Dec 20th. It’s not listed in the sample date, will they send an email and inform me if I’m the morning or afternoon session? Thanks!

For my interview day the did send a schedule the week before for the interview day. However, if you’re driving in and need to know ahead of time you could always email them and ask for the schedule

I was really impressed by the faculty and their plans for this school. Also, it’s hard to beat the tuition free for all four years. But this is their first year and it may matter which school you go to depending on what type of residency or fellowship you later on want to pursue. I am having same dilemma choosing between utmb and uttyler

Are you admitted to UTMB?

I think if you are interested in primary care, this school is a great option for you. They have a very heavy focus on it which was stressed on my interview day! It seems that they are expecting most of their students to go into primary care specialties and also do residency there. So look into their residency programs and see if they are of interest to you and you could see yourself happy in a number of them. Since it’s the first class I think many of the students will go into UTT residency programs if other programs aren’t willing to take chances on students from a new program. So I would say be comfortable with the idea of living there for at least the next 7-8 years if not the rest of your life because that’s their ultimate goal to train physicians who will practice in the region. Also if you are interested in very competitive specialties (ENT, Plastics, Derm, etc.) I don’t see this school being the best option for you. Could be an uphill battle. The dean said in a podcast recently that this won’t be a specialty focused school and he truly wants it to be focused on primary care. This is just my opinion and prediction though, I could very well be wrong. It’s hard to know until we see a few classes graduate. This is what I am considering though.

This is not what happens. The outcomes at all schools are usually a bell curve so the top and a few URM students can end up in some exclusive residency programs, especially if they are checking off boxes like first gen, Pell grant recipient, and whatever other boxes those programs are interested in. Find UTRGV year 1 match list for comparison.
