2022-2023 UT Tyler

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello! Y’all I’m currently an applicant to UT Tyler with ties to East Texas (been complete since September). I haven’t heard anything about an interview and was wondering if y’all believe they are done sending them out? Lastly, for those who interviewed - did you catch any Black or Hispanic applicants at any of the interviews?
My interview group was very diverse!

Anything received II today? They said my application is being reviewed and asked if I had any ties to ETX

Well... maybe tomorrow y'all! I know they send IIs via email later in the evening but acceptance calls were noon-ish last monday.

I wonder if they're going to wait bc they have interviews tomorrow & want to factor them in?

I think the early December timeline is no longer reliable since prematches have already been given. At this point we have no idea what they’re planning on doing.

We can sit here and hope for every single day something will come out but it’d probably be best to just not think about it.

Is it best? Yes. Am I capable of doing it? Absolutely not!

I think they probably have some idea of who they will extend offers to from the first rounds, my guess is that they’re still having technical issues or busy with preparing for the interviews. Hopefully we hear back within the next week or two.

That may be true, but they are probably waiting to have a larger pool of potential candidates before sending more prematches. They have no reason to rush to prematch students especially for a class of 40.

At this point, considering 3-4 people on sdn mentioned prematching, I wouldn’t be shocked if they sent As to 10 or so applicants already during that initial wave. They probably want to take their time at this point until they interviewed more people and discussed them

So that is a good point. Being a new school there is no precedent in how their interview/acceptances will go and how attractive the school is for the most desirable (gunner) applicants who may/may not rank UTT high because the school is an unknown, they don't like the curriculum, its not near a hospital they want to rotate at or other gunner peculiarity or just have the need to be near other gunners ahem (UT Southwest, Baylor). Not a knock on UTSW where I Post-doc'd but yeah each school has a personality, what can I say.

Have people posted they were reject already pre II or post II? If they have then that would throw fire on the theory of UTT Admin waiting till match but I am sure they have a percent in mind they will pre match and leave the rest to the rank match system but again being a new school they have to have some applicants that will rank UTT highly

I doubt they have sent any rejections at all. I also wasn’t necessarily suggesting they would wait till Match day for anymore As. What I was getting at is while they may have an idea of applicants they like, why rush the gun and send prematches to them when they can just wait till after they interviewed more applicants? Maybe it turns out someone they interviewed in December was amazing and they’d rather send them an A vs someone else.

The point is it doesn’t make sense for schools to send prematches constantly when they can just wait and then evaluate a larger pool.

Interesting, I thought UTMB was the only school that did that. UTSW and Baylor stopped giving out II's and didn't say anything. Did UT Tyler say they would?
You guys are trying to make this process “one size fits all” and it is anything but that.
The only hard TMDSAS endpoints once interview season starts are that all the interviews must be over by the February rank deadline so y’all can rank your schools, and that Matches are announced at 8 am on Match Day.
Within those rules a school can manage their interview process as they wish.

when you spend 4+ years in classes that force you to look for patterns then have to trash that mindset for apps 😭

I feel as though searching for some sort of answers and pattern to this whole process is the only thing that gives us some sort of feeling of control and hope as we sit idly and hopefully have our dreams come true. Yeah there is no sense or benefit to it, but its fun to believe sometimes

How do you know UTSW and Baylor stopped giving out interviews? Sdn is not 100%. Just because the last interview date reported on sdn was XX date doesn’t mean it actually is.

For example, @wysdoc posted that last year UTSW last interview invite was on November 18th per sdn, but I know for a fact one of my friends got an II in December last year for that school. We are at the mercy of what people tell us on these threads, and the people who are actually vocal on sdn make up <5% of the total applicant pool.

Baylor has sent letters in the past when they filled all their interview spots. Typically it will be mid January before they send a notification.

Actually the dates I post are for interview invitations and the interviews of course are on days beyond that

Sorry I meant to say that my friend received an interview invitation in December!

Which makes sense, it was an official announcement by the school. From my understanding, they have not sent any letters like that this year

Exactly! "UTT SOM is trying to be different" has been a repetitive statement from faculty. So I agree with your sentiment. However, a common quality of people that are in pursuit of becoming a physician is, curiosity.

Imho, it is simply inherent and expected for people emotionally invested in this school to speculate out of simple curiosity and interest in how the school is 'trying to be different'. I know this because that is what is driving my own speculation.

@whimseymed @gpndr13 @mfd98 Does the letter that was sent to you ask you how soon you to submit an acceptance - 2 days, 1 week etc as a timeline to hold your seat?

New School - New Admissions - How are they going to do it being new etc.? The discussion results in a fascinating exercise in curiosity whether from applicant to former medical student to just being a Professor (I am all 3).

For the new students applying, this is literally their life so they definitely will be curious, especially if their life is perceived to be riding in the balance of the process.

But yes one size does not fit all. 🙂

Absolutely, curiosity is normal and I was more trying to discourage the "jumping to conclusions" trend I was seeing - didn't want people to assume there were no more chances for interviews etc. when we really don't know

I was told by faculty this past weekend that they had accepted 8 students prior to those accepted this morning
Dang you're able to talk directly to faculty lol? That's nice to know, so they have probably accepted ~20 in total after today

I’m just wondering if they’re done w IIs the interview season ends mid Jan or late Jan right?
