2022-2023 UT Tyler

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UT Tyler is a very small school at the moment and can interview only so many people and admit a small portion of them. They are mission focused this year and unless someone is a disadvantaged person from East Texas, getting an interview based on anything else is unexpected.

I submitted my application a long time ago and still no interview invite 🙁 this is really upsetting me

I think with the region centered focus and small class size, it is really tough to get an interview here. Not sure if you are a native, but I am sure you are more than qualified and an amazing applicant! I think as the years go by and the class size expands, the region centered index they use will have less of an effect, similar to El Paso and RGV. I hope you receive an invite soon. Maybe contact admissions and see if they’ve gotten a chance to look over your file yet.

Lol you took the words right out of my mouth!

Just to follow what they are saying above, they received ~5000 applications for ~150 interviews for 40 spots. SDN contains a vocal minority, and by not getting an II here it does not mean anybody is any less of a competitive applicant! If there are 15 people here with IIs then that is 1/10 of the total IIs and 0.003% of the total number of applicants, and it is likely because they fit a very specific set of criteria the school is looking for.

Hey, I know it's tough but keep your head up. SDN is a great resource but often attracts some of the top applicants, creating a skewed perception of reality. Some people get interviews from everywhere they apply, and that's great, but that's an unrealistic standard for most. We are all on our own journey and I'm rooting for you!
Thank you ese2 and Jeld78 for being so positive. I will keep praying

I don't want want to stomp on the hopes and dreams of applicants from outside the region, but my bet is this class will essentially be all local applicants.

East Texas is a family centered area that has never had a medical school closer than 2 hours away (for most people). I've been waiting since the announcement of this school which was Feb. 2020 to have the chance to stay home and be close to family.

I know my situation is probably very rare, but 40 is not a big number. It has made me wonder, 'How many great candidates are hidden throughout the region that have been delaying medical school to stay in ETX?' We are not lacking talented people here in ETX, we have only been lacking an institution to train these great people.

If they are confident they can make 40 local applicants physicians, I believe they will choose the 40 they have the most confidence in. The question is, 'Are there 40 local applicants they are confident in?' We can only speculate.

Good luck to everyone!

I agree with you to an extent, but the Dean said they anticipate having people from across the state, not to mention that there are non-East Texans who got interviews. I highly doubt the administration would waste their resources in interviewing those people for no reason.

Well it would be silly to not expand the interviews, but I believe what he is saying is that IF there are 40 people from ETX they may be accepted before people outside the region

This could happen, and - there could be East Texans who would like to train in a different city, then return to East Texas to practice.

Yes, IF there are 40 local applicants they believe they can make great doctors. Perhaps there will only be 20 or 30 they are confident in. My post was simply posing the question, 'What if there are more than anticipated? (ie. 50 or 60)?'

My bet is they will avoid choosing a 'flight risk' if there is an abundance of QUALIFIED local candidates. I could also be very wrong.

I'm sure East Texans will get a preference, but I'd be very surprised if all 40 were from East Texas.
Hopefully they’re not all going to be from East Texas. Otherwise a lot of us that traveled far just to come here would be very upset if they really only intended to admit people from the region.

Also you have to understand that just because they’re a local candidate, doesn’t mean they will stay and practice there. They’re some people that probably view it has a cheap ticket to get out of the region lol.

You are absolutely right, but you could say the same for non-local.

Sadly :/ I know for most of us though it really is an opportunity to work in the same communities we grew up in! I just hope that somehow can shine through in the applications

I think everyone is saying the same thing....they will be mission focused and prioritize ETX. However, who knows how many of those interviewed are local to the region? Unfortunately, we won't know until they start sending out acceptances. But we do know that all 40 will be highly motivated, mission driven, and qualified. That is all that matters!

I would agree and would add to this- many of us (ETX Locals) pushed back applying a year or even two to apply here- so I think this year specifically could be more skewed than future years.

Oh we are all in this together. I feel like it's getting worse by the day for me
I think their last interview day in December is December 13th.. and they'd need time to discuss those candidates. So maybe right before Christmas? I guess it depends if they are wanting to wait on those December interviews or not before releasing pre-matches.

I think we already knew that a majority of the class will be from ETX. But there is still a lot of room for those outside to be accepted. And honestly, I hope the class isn't entirely ETX. I think UTT's class could benefit from having students with varied life experiences.

Yup, exactly what I was thinking. It would be wise for UTT to admit candidates from all over to bring in multiple perspectives and expose more people to how amazing East Texas truly is! I think there's a huge misconception about the area being extremely rural/underdeveloped which is not the case, and a way to counter that would bring people from all over and show them the real East Texas. But hey, that's my two cents.

Well at this point whoever is from outside is just waiting for II or had an II so whatever be will be ( que sera sera )

Yes, I hope they choose some students that are not from ETX

i’m sure some ETX students may get accepted and go to other schools due to prestige/etc
Yep, going to a brand new school is something of a gamble with the curriculum and methods still in development, unknown match potential, etc. I grew up in ETX and some of my mentors in the medical community advised me to focus my attention on more established programs.

FWIW, I did not receive an II from them despite it being my hometown.

Yup. Got the same advice, if you are going for a competitive specialty. If you are going for primary care, may be ok.

I have had the same advice also. I think it is good blanket advice. There will be volatility and adversity that comes with anything in life that is new (growing pains), but that is what excites me about it. It is a new frontier.

Do you know if they will say when they’re done handing out IIs or if they would be giving post secondary/II rejections?

I doubt they’ll start handing out any rejections any time this year to anyone who’s gotten an interview invite. But if you don’t get a secondary invite by like mid January it’d be safe to say that’s a rejection since the last interview is like sometime in January.

100%. the potential to set the campus culture is part of what i’m so excited about.

the great thing too is that they really want their people to be residents there, so there’s lots of stuff from primary care to preventative medicine to surgery that won’t dismiss them bc they’re a new school

For those who are more knowledgeable than me, I am fortunate enough to have just gotten a 1st author pub, which I mentioned in my app I was anticipating this fall. Should I send an update letter for this, or wait and include it in my LOI in January if I don't prematch in December?

For those who have gotten interviews here (and other tmdsas schools), did you find out through email or should I be constantly checking the different portals?

For this school, make sure you have received an email with the subject "UT Tyler: UT Tyler SOM - Applications Completed". If you haven't received that email make sure the portal is showing your CASPer, Duet, Letters, etc are all uploaded and showing green checks. After that, you just gotta hurry up and wait. 😉

I just want the II email....

I just got an email about a one-time secondary extension request. By the time I got around to actually doing this secondary, it seemed like it was really late. Is it worth it at all to request an extension or submit a secondary? Seems like it wouldn’t be but I’m not sure.

So you haven’t turned it in yet I’m assuming? If they’re offering an extension I say take it even tho it may be late it’s another possible opportunity and it’s better than just leaving it unfinished, it’s also free so that’s a bonus.

At the end of the day just make sure ur doing what’s best for u
