2022-2023 UT Tyler

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We have 6 known admitted people so far.

Are any of you admitted to UTT considering other schools?
Definitely a tough decision but I think UTT is top for me at the moment, but my husband and I have a lot of discussing to do!
@sp99 @BeeAreEye @ctweedlebee would any of you mind sharing your stats? 😊
I think my LM is ~65, MCAT 506. I am non-trad and have a lot of work experience though, specifically in East Texas!

what interview dates are left from now until christmas?

has anyone been accepted that isn’t “born and raised” but has ties/went to school here?

Hmm… they’re staying true to their mission of recruiting from East Texas as from what I’ve seen, most people have been both born and raised in East Texas. Does anyone know of any acceptees with less strong ties to East Texas than that? i.e. going to university here, working here, having family here but not living with that family, etc…

What interview group is the latest date we've seen an acceptance come from?

Does anyone know if this school would accept letters of intent?? Or should I email them to ask??

they do but it’s been suggested to wait until closer to the match after prematch period
My advisor had me send my LOI about a month after interviewing. The school accepted it and had me upload it to my portal.

I sent an update letter a couple weeks back and I just uploaded it to the portal. Is that what we're supposed to do or should I email them as well?

I sent my LOI via email and portal and they just said "thank you....please ensure that you upload to your portal". So maybe email to let them know you uploaded it?

Hey! For those who interview. How was it? Was the MMI hard?

I did feel the MMI was definitely harder compared to other MMIs I have done. They weren't trick questions or anything, but the prompts required much more critical thinking/people skills as compared to traditional MMI questions. Like traditional MMI questions are very formulaic but these required you to have a legitamate thought process

I 100% agree with this. UTT was my third MMI and the hardest. However, if you prep well you will be just fine!

What have people studied for MMI's? When I had my interviews 12 years ago, I never had this before, at most just some essay questions during the interview. So much more extra stuff now. Pretty crazy.

There are a few books out there about MMI's so I got one! There's a page from I think UWash that contains a fairly comprehensive list of medical ethics with explainations of each one, I could probably find a link to that if I took the time. I also ran through a couple dozen MMI prompts from different sources so I'd have a foundation to answer most questions.

With that said, I tend to over prepare so that may be overkill for some people!

There's a forum for that! Casper/Situational Judgement Tests
cruise around to see the types of questions an MMI system might hold.
Preparing for the CASPer prepares you for an MMI, it will just be a spoken answer, not a typed one.

Thank you so much, yeah there was no Casper when I interviewed over a decade ago, none of all of this stuff. All new to me, thanks I will check it out.

I went through a few different example questions, but that's about it. I wanted to be authentic and not sound systematic in my answering. I felt it was ok to not answer the questions perfectly, but to be able to have a conversation on the subject. Just be yourself, imo.

I appreciate the advice, thank you. I'm an old dinosaur but trying to remain young at heart. 🙂

I mean is there some set medical ethics mindset they are looking for? Regurgitation of medical ethics or just see how you rationalize your decision in a stressful moment? I get the point of it being important, but not so much exactly what they are looking for by applicant responses. Same with Casper....there are so many multifactorial variables that it just seems some programmed responses is the feedback they would look for. Ofcourse do no harm.....value patient choice....provide choices to patients, raise awareness if abuse is occurring and notify responsibility to report.

Oh well, atleast when a Jehovah witness needs a transfusion we all will be prepared with how to approach it.

I didn’t use the UW page as something to memorize, but rather as an informative source of some topics I wasn’t familiar with. I had several of them come up in an MMI interview.
Also, worth noting that there are free Casper tests on their website.

You really hit the nail on the head. From my understanding, it's seeing that you can have and defend an opinion, you're knowledgeable regarding certain "hot topics" in medicine, and that you have a personality and people skills

You seem hostile about this, why?
Every patient encounter involves thinking on your feet and interacting with someone whose outlook may not match yours.
There's an art to thinking about what's in front of you. It's not about memorizing a right answer, but being able to talk about how you see a situation and what a reasonable course of action would be.

Thanks everyone! I needed the advice. Also. I received an interview. Any advice y’all could give would be great!

here’s some unsolicited pondering now that today is over. i feel its a grounded assumption they’ll send a round of prematches after their last pre-holiday interview, sometime between the 21st-23rd.

Or they might be waiting until after all interviews are complete? When they told us that all pre-matches would go out in December there weren't any interview days for Dec or Jan. It seems like they've adjusted their timeline.

They did have interviews for Dec and Jan planned, just not available to sign up for

Which sounds so late to me

I don’t think it’s late, most TMDSAS schools interview until January or February. Interviews just have to be done before rank preferences are due in mid-Feb.

They have already (most likely) sent out close to 20 pre-matches so it’s possible they’ll wait until January before sending more. I hope it’s earlier but it’s better not to expect anything this month since they’ve already had two waves before the holidays.

I'm sorry, it sounds late as in "why are they not open yet" late

Oh I see, yeah I think it’s also normal for later dates to open as the cycle progresses, but not totally sure. But we’ve waited this long so far, only a couple more months! Hang in there.

For those that have attended the meet and greet, was it a business casual or professional attire? Thanks!

For those of you who have interviewed…what’s the mask situation?
