This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Maybe I’m being overly sentimental. But I just want to let anyone who received this letter to know you have what it takes to be a great physician. This school may minimize the time, energy, money and strife you went through to make it this far. But I promise you ARE “physician material”. Their no is just opening the door for a yes from a school that will value your achievements and commitment.

Rejection is hard, but this rejection letter in particular would bring on self doubt in anyone. Take care of yourselves friends .

Anyone here apply to the MSTP? I was trying to find some info on their website about when their last interview dates were, but couldn't find anything and was seeing if I had a chance at an II (complete mid August).

I did. Complete late July and have yet to hear anything 🙁

complete 08/17. LM 66. Lower end of stats but was hoping my ties would help a little, VA is my hometown. yea should've waited after thanksgiving.
bruh seriously i loved them in the interview (and Dr. Cook seems so wholesome) but after hearing how they are handling admissions on here it seems they've got someone with a first quartile casper handling rejections

any advice, thoughts, or opinion for someone who is going to interview here soon? did anyone interview for the fmSTAT program and does not mind me DM'ing them?

II, complete 7/16, OOS. No interview days in December, multiple options in January. Not sure if this made a difference but I sent in an update 2 days ago (I like to think it did 🙂 )

Congratulations!! Did VCU ask you to send an update? I thought VCU didn’t accept updates unless they request it

Thank you!! They did not ask me for an update and I actually didn't know that they request them from applicants! I figured it was okay to submit an update since there is a "Document Upload" tab in the secondary application portal. I just categorized my updates as "additional documents".

Wait a second… two people getting IIs with updates even though their website explicitly says not to send updates unless they’re requested? I’m starting to think I should send one anyway… I have a significant update. How do other people feel about this? Good or bad idea? (I also get the sense that their website may not necessarily be up to date?)

They also mention that updates should be sent at their request under the FAQs tab on the portal. Although I personally feel like updates should be sent, proceed with caution as sending one would go against what they say.

Hey guys!

I have an interview at VCU, which I am extremely happy about. Are there any accepted students or med students on this sub that can give me some insight into the school? Why did you choose VCU? How are you personally involved in research/community service/clubs/orgs? Is the faculty good? I also have questions about the rotation sites. I wasn't able to find much information on their website. At least I was unsure where to look.

Thanks!

You're right it's not worth the risk. Thanks for talking me down 😂

I personally chose it because I've grown up in RVA my whole life, went to VCU for undergrad and had a lot of insight into how VCU/MCV is as a hospital. When you go to MCV as a patient as opposed to other hospitals in RVA (at least in my experience), there's a clear difference and I just wanted to learn from the same doctors/faculty that make the hospital so great. They also have a CBG program where you can possibly start residency early at VCU if you're accepted into it. It's only for a few specialties as of now, but they are trying to expand it. (Competency-Based Graduation Program VCU School of Medicine)

I haven't attended classes or anything yet of course, but I have a few friends who are M1's and they have nothing but good things to say about their experience so far. Its rigorous of course, but they feel really supported by teaching faculty. I also like how flexible they are about attending lectures: you can attend in person, watch live on Zoom or watch recorded lectures whenever you want.

They don't have a research requirement in their curriculum, but VCU does a ton of research, so there's lots of opportunities. They have a summer research program for rising M2's with a stipend of up to $2,000. They also have programs like I2CRP and other service-oriented clubs.

VCU's hospital is top notch and most rotations are completed at VCU or at the McGuire VA Hospital nearby. OB/GYN rotations are sometimes completed at a hospital in Norfolk, but they provide you an apartment to stay at if you end up going there for this rotation.

The wait for an II can feel excruciating, but there’s still time to hear good news from here. Good things will come your way. I believe in you!
You're so right. Thank you, film doc! I am looking forward to seeing your success on our shared threads!

Just went to the accepted students day and it was AMAZING. Highly recommend anyone who has the opportunity to go, the campus, faculty and facilities are incredible. The way the curriculum is set up is so unique from a lot of other medical schools, too. They really emphasize clinical training and time in the hospital.

Sorry to hear that! Did you receive the R through email? I submitted a couple of weeks later than you and haven’t heard back…
An email was sent out to indicate it. I’m thankful that I didn’t get that one school of pharmacy email where it briefly mentions about being rejected from the school that other people got a while ago.

As long as you haven’t received a pre-II R, you’re still being considered. Hoping that good things will come your way!

Does anyone know if we should send in update letters if we’re put on hold after interview? On the website it says you can if you’re placed in the alternate pool after interview but I’m not sure if that’s the same thing as a hold.

Just curious, is everyone automatically put on hold if they interviewed between the dates when admissions decisions are released?

Yeah you can send updates post-interview. That's the only time they accept them and it has to be something significant is what they told us on my interview day in September.

do they not accept updates pre-II? there's a spot on the portal to upload documents, and the website seems outdated

The VCU website says this, and was repeated when we interviewed:

Submitting Additional Materials

DO NOT
submit additional materials or updates. The college accepts additional information only when an applicant is placed in the alternate pool after interview or by Committee request. We believe that the AMCAS application you initially submitted is representative of your academic abilities and activities.

The alternate pool is if you haven't been accepted by the last batch in March and are placed on the WL, IIRC
