Hello! For those who have interviewed, do they prefer that you have one of the UMN zoom backgrounds on during your interview? Or do most candidates just use their regular Zoom background? Thank you!
back when i interviewed last cycle, i didn't use their backgrounds since they were usually very bright and washed me out lol. i just used a plain one and i still got in so i doubt they have preference. I also recall applicants using just a blur feature too. Def dont worry too much about backgrounds and which one to use just do ur best in the interview which is what matters!

I did not use the virtual background. Many did not - just made sure the background of their actual space was neutral.
They did say something about virtual backgrounds slowing internet down and suggested the virtual background be shut off if applicants had an unstable connection.

For those who have interviewed, do you have time to take notes after being presented with the MMI Prompt before you enter the Zoom room? Or do they just present you with the prompt when you enter the Zoom room?

The MMI prompts were provided early in the process- before freeform interview- and some time was allowed for applicants to read them and think about them for a few minutes. Then when you enter the zoom room, the person reads the prompt for that specific room.

Does UMN allow any sort of update letters/letters of interest in any way shape or form receiving an interview invite? I would like to update the school and reiterate my interest in the school as it is my top choice!

They allow one update letter but only after the interview and before 11:59 PM the same night of the interview.

My stats weren’t the best but being in state and a strong mission fit helps but isn’t part of these online scoring programs

Is the Duluth campus interview in MMI format this year? Does anyone have any insight on the duluth interview & rural interest? Thank you in advance!

If I got an interview for UMD campus but my top choice was the TC campus, am I automatically out of the run for the TC campus?

Both campuses are together for most of the interview process including the freeform/1:1, MMI, & student ambassadors. After the student ambassador part, applicants who were selected to interview with Duluth campus log off the zoom link and on to a separate zoom link where they interview with the Duluth panel.

I don't think so. TC and Duluth applicants interview together - then Duluth applicants go on to the separate Duluth panel - so it seems you are able to interview for both. Did you get an II for Duluth?

I did this too. They told me they take into account preference when reviewing to some extent, but it depends on which they think is a better fit for you.

Anyone have tips for interview day? How is the general feel during it?

I disagree with other people calling this interview relaxed. Maybe I’ve been blessed with incredibly relaxed interviews so far, but this one was not as congenial as my other interviews. The word I would use to describe UMN’s interview is “rehearsed”. In all fairness to my descriptive word, I respect UMN’s dedication to a standardized interview experience. The interviewers themselves were generally pretty laid back.

I’ve also seen complaints on the interview page about repeated MMI questions that give an advantage to students who have friends who have interviewed before.

Not to my knowledge.

I interviewed yesterday and was told they don’t know if we’ll hear back in december or in february. for those who interviewed earlier, did you hear any different?

Do they give you your interviewers names before the day of your interview for either the traditional interview with TC campus of the traditional interview with the Rural committee?

For TC you do not get your interviewer beforehand!
